Cynopsis: Kids!
03/10/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

E1 Entertainment is gonna “rock and roll all nite” as they enter into a new development deal with the rock band KISS for a new kid-targeted half-hour comedy.  E1 will produce and handle worldwide distribution of the currently untitled series, which will be executive produced by E1’s John Morayniss and Frank Saperstein and KISS’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.  E1 and KISS will handle all licensing and merchandise for the series.  Most recently KISS has been part of the Dr. Pepper ad campaign, including during Super Bowl XLIV, and the band appeared on the 2009 American Idol finale.  This isn’t the band’s first foray into kid-targeted programming.  KISS voiced a stop-motion animated short film of Nickelodeon’s Action League Now segment, which was part of the network’s series KaBlam, which featured KISS action figures and ran in movie theaters ahead of Nickelodeon’s Good Burger movie.  Additionally, Gene Simmons created the animated series My Dad the Rock Star, which was produced by Nelvana and aired on Nickelodeon US and Teletoon (US), among other places.  Also for kids, Simmons starred in the reality documentary series Rock School (AKA Gene Simmons’ Rock School).  In the not for kids TV arena Simmons also created the reality show Mr. Romance and created/starred in the reality series Gene Simmons Family Jewels.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Popular comic strips B.C. and Wizard of Id are being developed for both TV and feature film.  The estate of the late Johnny Hart, creator of B.C. and Wizard of Id, has entered into an exclusive production/development deal with animation producer Mark Simon for both properties.  Simon is working with Hart’s estate, Creators Syndicate’s Jack Newcombe and The Metropolis Talent Agency to develop, pitch and produce projects based on the classic comic strips.  Simon says they are working on family-targeted movie adaptations of both properties, and tween-targeted animated TV series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The great band Devo will perform a new song, Watch us Work It, on the preschool series Yo Gabba Gabba on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. tomorrow, Thursday March 11, at 10:30a and 1p respectively (double check local listings).

Former kid/tween star Hilary Duff inks a multi-book deal with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers to publish her first young adult fiction book series.  The first title in the book series, entitled Elixir, will be released in hardcover in October 2010.  Also part of the deal are world rights for a nonfiction title to be published in spring 2012 that focuses on the challenges faced by kids of divorce, which is an issue Duff has dealt with in her own life and has sung about in several of her songs.  Filled with intrigue, a dangerous love triangle and international adventure, Elixir follows Clea a young photojournalist as she and her friends travel the world in search of a young man that continually shows up in her photos and perhaps solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance, and save all their lives.

Program Call: Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual MIPTV Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis subscribers on Thursday, April 8, the week before MIPTV 2010 in Cannes. If your company is exhibiting and you’d like to have your programming included, please send us only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.) as well as your company’s stand/booth location. To be included in this free and highly-viewed special edition, please send details to [email protected] no later than Thursday, April 1, 2010. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission (if you don’t get the confirmation, please resubmit).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Moving Picture Books partners with Sesame Workshop to offer new Sesame Street digital books for young readers.  The new series of six Sesame Street titles are available for download to computers and mobile devices.  Each story (8-10 minutes long, $1.99/each) also includes bonus educational content, which relates to the story, featuring Sesame Street’s Bob McGrath (AKA Bob on Sesame Street).  The animated Sesame Street digital books include Elmo Loves You, Rise And Shine, The ABCs of Cookies, Grover’s 10 Terrific Ways To Help Our Wonderful World, What Makes You Giggle? and Elmo Visits The Dentist.  The books can be viewed with our without English text displayed on the screen and are available via www.movingpicturebooks.com and from April 5, on iTunes.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) enters into a licensing deal with hearing technology company Starkey Laboratories to launch a co-branded line of pediatric hearing aids.  The earmolds, which are specifically created for kids 0-13, will feature some of Nickelodeon’s most popular characters, including SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, Go, Diego, Go! and Dora the Explorer.

Majesco Entertainment releases its new video game, The Daring Game for Girls for Wii and Nintendo DS.  Based on The Daring Book for Girls series, which has sold close to two million copies to date, the game lets girls plan for an adventure and spy missions after playing games, making friends, collecting gear and learning facts about important women throughout history.  Developed by WXP, The Daring Game for Girls game is rated E for Everyone.

STONE SOUP

Like the Whos in Whoville “We are here! We are here!” The U.S. Census Bureau is launching Children Count Too, a public awareness effort that reminds parents not to forget to count babies and young kids when filling out their 2010 Census forms, which are being sent out this month.  The US Census Bureau has partnered with Nickelodeon to help get the reminder out to parents.  The Children Count Too campaign features Dora the Explorer in TV and radio public service announcements (PSAs), web buttons, fact sheets  all of which are available in English and Spanish.  It is vital that all kids of all ages are included in the census forms to get an accurate count and prepare for what the US will need in terms of health and education (to name a few) in the coming years.  Mead Johnson Nutrition Company will reach out to 1+ million families with young kids through various avenues, including online, to communicate the importance of counting kids in the 2010 Census.  In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Division of Food and Nutrition Services will display 2010 Census posters and Dora the Explorer-themed 2010 Census fact sheets in 3,000+ Women, Infants, and Children and 4,100 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program local offices.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cablevision Systems Corporation appoints Lisa Rosenblum as EVP/Government and Public Affairs.  Rosenblum, who joined the company in 1996, will continue to serve as the Cablevision’s chief government affairs executive and strategist.  Reporting to Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge, Rosenblum is responsible for directing Cablevision’s local, state and federal government relations as well as all legislative, regulatory and policy matters for the company’s business units.  Additionally, she oversees company’s nationwide education initiative, Power to Learn.
