Dish Network drops four of Disney‘s HD channels Disney Channel HD, Disney XD HD, ABC Family HD and ESPNews HD from its satellite channel line-up over a carriage fee dispute, Multichannel News. The standard versions of all four channels, as well as ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD, remain on Dish.  Dish argues that Disney is asking for “significant” fee increase to carry the Disney HD channels stating, “Dish Network offers all customers ‘HD Free for Life,’ which is possible because we are committed to negotiating fair contracts that allow us to keep our prices low. That is why we could not agree to the significant fees requested by Disney and ESPN Networks for the HD feeds of Disney East, Disney XD, ESPNews and ABC Family.”  Disney issued a statement explaining, “A recent New York State Court ruling confirms our position that Dish Network is not entitled to carry ABC Family HD, Disney Channel HD, Disney XD HD and ESPNEWS HD without paying compensation.”  The court decision refers to the 2008 suite filed by Dish against Disney and ESPN Media Networks concerning carriage of the four HD networks.  At that time in the litigation, the court stipulated that Disney provide the networks to Dish in exchange for a per subscriber feel while the case continued.  In March of this year, the court ruled in Disney’s favor and subsequently Disney submitted an HD fee proposal to Dish.  Dish is appealing that ruling.  Dish and Disney have expressed hopes that they can still reach an agreement.  Disney has deals in place for the four HD channels in question with other providers including DirecTV, Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, AT&T U-Verse, and Verizon FiOS, among others.

At the same time … RCN Corporation inks an HD carriage deal with MTV Networks and BET Networks that adds seven of their HD channels to its line-up including Nickelodeon, MTV, CMT, VH1, Spike and BET.  Programming will also be available free on RCN’s VOD beginning July 1.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Trolls raise their big hair again as DreamWorks Animation shifts from ogres to trolls, as the animation studio plans to make a movie featuring The Good Luck Trolls under a deal with Denmark-based Dam Things, which owns the rights to the toy line, per THR.  The screenplay will be written by the sibling duo of Adam Wilson and Melanie Wilson LaBracio.  Festa Entertainment’s Dannie Festa, who brought the project to DreamWorks Animation, will serve as an executive producer on the movie.

Telescreen enters into a media and merchandising rights pact with Russia’s Noviy Disk and Marmelad Media for the animated property Dibo  The Gift Dragon (52×11).  Under the deal Noviy Disk will handle the TV, home entertainment and VOD rights to the TV series, while brand manager Marmelad Media (Gogoriki) create a consumer products merchandising program.  Produced by Korea’s Ocon Animation, Dibo  The Gift Dragon revolves around Dido, a friendly purple dragon that makes wishes come true with gifts.  Telescreen, a subsidiary of m4e, will also feature Dibo this week a Discop East in Budapest, as well as offering other properties including Rudolf and Frog & Friends.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) also attends Discop East this week where it will showcase a wide range of series, including Nickelodeon’s kid/tween live-action music based series Big Time Rush.  The series is produced by Scott Fellows (Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide) in partnership with Sony Music.  MTVNI will also be offering MTV series, aimed at teens and up, including the drama/reality show The Hills (103×30, 2×60, 1×120), the dramedy Gigantic (18×30), as well as the documentary, Famous Crime Science (7×30).

PBS Parents and iVillage are teaming up to launch PBS Kids Summer Reading Challenge ( www.ivillage.com/pbs ), a four week online initiative is designed to encourage parents and kids to read together over the summer.  Hosted by iVillage, the challenge launches July 5 (but parents can sign up now), and will feature literacy building tools and activities for parents to use with kids, which were designed by the team at PBS Parents and PBS Kids.  Additionally, serving as Challenge Coach, Angela Santomero (creator/executive producer Super Why!, Blues Clues), will offer daily reading activities, as well as answer parent questions and offer advice throughout the online event.  The PBS Kids Summer Reading Challenge will also feature message boards and downloadable printable items featuring PBS Kids characters.

Sesame Workshop and Mercy Corps are partnering to bring educational programming to kids in Haiti.  Sesame Workshop has dubbed one DVD featuring two Sesame Home Videos into Creole, and produced three short original films shot in Haiti that specifically focus on the country’s post-earthquake challenges.  The videos underline the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, teamwork and play.  The films, created by Sesame Workshop and filmmaker Linda Costigan following the earthquake with local production teams, promote cooperation, self-esteem, creativity and hope.  Mercy Corps will distribute at least 1,000 DVDs of the programming to schools, orphanages and other kid-centric facilities in the country.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BabyTV and Itsyourstory, publisher of personalized photo books, will launch the first two BabyTV books on July 1, 2010.  Based on BabyTV characters the first two titles are Guess with Tulli and Opposites with Draco.  Additionally, Smart Kids Publishing Canada signs on as the publishing partner for Canada with plans for a series of developmental book formats (in English and French), including added value items featuring BabyTV’s original characters.  The first Canadian title will be available for holiday 2010.

Imax Corporation and European exhibitor Odeon & UCI Cinemas Groups enter into a deal that will see an Imax digital theater system installed in the exhibitor’s main location in Liverpool, England.  This makes seven Imax theaters operated by Odeon.

Stone America Licensing names Pearson, an educational publisher, as the exclusive publisher for soft and card cover books based on the StinkyKids ( www.stinkykids.com ) doll line.  StinkyKids recently signed up Madame Alexander to both replenish their doll reorders, as well as to expand the program to additional specialty, mid-tier and mass retailers.
