Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/23/10
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 23, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Following in the footsteps of Best Buy (which is partnering with Sonic Solution’s CinemaNow to pipe movies directly to connected devices) and Wal-Mart, (which recently acquired digital media company/TV apps platform Vudu,) Sears and K-Mart are planning to launch a new digital video service available exclusively on TVs and Blu-ray players sold at the retailers’ stores. The digital store will use a technology platform also provided by Sonic Solutions, whose RoxioNow system will be installed on select devices from multiple manufacturers by the end of the year. The advantage of these partnerships will be that sales associates will demo the process in the store to insure smooth movie ordering when neophytes take the TV or set top home.
CNN launched a new food-themed vertical called Eatocracy, edited by Kat Kinsman, former Senior Editor at AOL Food and Slashfood. The site seeks to cover larger trends, economics and the politics of eating, tapping into user comments and iReport submissions to ping the crowd on controversial issues.
To promote Syfy’s Saturday Night Movie franchise, NBCU’s Syfy.com and News Corp.’s gaming site IGN.com are launching a new contest enabling viewers to jointly create their own schlocky movie. For the next 6 weeks the “B Movie Mogul” production site will ask users to choose everything from the movie’s concept (Bermuda Triangle, Roswell, 2012) to wardrobe, dialogue, taglines and one-liners. The winning movie concept will be announced during the Saturday, Aug. 14 movie.
International Media Distribution (IMD) has expanded distribution of its Bollywood Hits On Demand service to Cox Communications‘ markets of Phoenix and Tucson; Bright House Networks‘ Tampa and Time Warner Cable in San Diego, North County and Desert Cities systems.
NextNewNetworks has launched a website to countdown its total video views as it creeps toward the 1 billion view milestone for all of its shows. NNN says monthly views have nearly doubled, from 32.8MM to a projected 65.3MM, from January to June of this year.
Revision3‘s newest show is Tom’s Top 5, another tech-themed countdown show collating the best and worst of a weekly topic, beginning with the “top 5 Must Have Geek Gadgets”, followed next Tuesday with the “5 Worst Syfy Shows.” Tech guru Tom Merritt of CNET and TwiT Network fame hosts.
Online advertising start-up Resonate Networks closed on a $5 million Series A round of financing, led by Greycroft Partners and iNovia Capital. Ian Sigalow, Partner at Greycroft Partners, also joined the company’s Board of Directors. Resonate says it will use the funding on R&D, sales and marketing efforts with brand and corporate social responsibility advertisers. Resonate launched its “Attitudinal Targeting,” platform in 2009, mining psychographics data to target consumers based on their values, beliefs, and attitudes.
Following the O.K. from NBC affiliates, the Comcast/NBCU merger has also received the seal of approval from the ABC, CBS and Fox Affiliate boards, reports TVNewsCheck. The stations outlined 6 conditions they’d like to be met, such as promising fair treatment during retransmission consent negotiations. Meanwhile a number of watchdog groups, lawmakers and competitors including DirecTV, Dish Network and Bloomberg expressed criticism of the merger on Monday – the final deadline for the first wave of comments on the merger. Most of the large media groups remained silent on the deal.
Intel says it is in talks with the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to settle all outstanding legal disputes between the two chip giants, including antitrust litigation and patent cross license disputes. Under terms of the deal, AMD and Intel obtain patent rights from a new 5-year cross license agreement, both will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement, and Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion in damages.
CDN Brightcove unveiled a new solution to deliver video to Android devices, with a full Software Development Kit (SDK) enabling developers to create native, video-driven apps for the popular platform. Future iterations of the software will enable one-touch sharing with Twitter and Facebook, among other features.
Adobe also continues to remain relevant in the mobile space, releasing version 10.1 of its Flash Mobile Player supporting multiple (non-Apple) mobile devices including Motorola’s Droid, Google’s Nexus One and HTC’s EVo based on Android, BlackBerry, web OS, etc. Adobe also released a positive earnings report yesterday, claiming an 18% jump in Q2 profit on strong sales of its flagship Creative Suite 5 media software bundle.
Consumers are hyped up about buying electronic gizmos this year, but a lion’s share of them plan to spend more time researching online before they buy, according to a new About.com Consumer Electronics survey. Most are cautious and patient; nearly 70% of respondents said they usually wait a few months to purchase electronics to ensure the product is worth the money and functions properly. Another 60% say they will stick with well-established brands.
Multimedia measurement company Kantar Media is launching a new TV audience analytics application in the U.S., available initially to measure audiences on the DirecTV platform. The “InfoSysRPD” system mines data from DirecTV set-tops including live and time-shifted viewing, offering the ability to customize insights and process multiple reports simultaneously.
Demand for the iPad doesn’t appear to be slackening as Apple announced it has sold 3 million units to date, just 80 days after its launch in the U.S. Developers have now created 11,000 new apps to run natively on the iPad, to go along with the 225,000 or so iPhone/iPod Touch apps that will also run on the device.
Amid the lead up to tomorrow’s iPhone 4 launch (Apple’s iOS4 is already out for iPhone 3GS users,) Microsoft released an updated version of its Bing iPhone app featuring social networking integration (allowing you to view friend updates from Twitter and Facebook) and a new tool which allows you to scan bar codes and media cover art with your camera.
Tribune’s LA Times has finally launched a ($1.99) iPhone app worthy of the platform, taking advantage of customization features and social networking integrations to make it relevant. One of the cooler features is the ability to download content to save for later when you’re not connected to the network (a much needed feature for New York City residents.)
The SlingPlayer Mobile App has launched for the Android OS, selling for a dear $29.99. It allows you to connect to your Slingbox Solo, Pro or Pro-HD device to view live content via a 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi Network.
Tremor Media named Matthew Corbin as VP/Global Platform Solutions, a newly created position. Matthew comes over from Google, and is charged with leading executive strategy for the monetization of Tremor Media’s video platform and network, focusing on the global scale of processes, systems, partner relationships, as well as product requirements and integrations.
Until now, porting online video over to televisions has required multiple integrations. Despite being owned by Comcast, white label online video services company thePlatform is introducing wide-scale support for the top over-the-top (OTT) video and connected set-top providers this morning for its publishing partners. This means that video producers who hire thePlatform to handle management of their online video will be able to easily deliver, monetize and track it across most of the leading last-10-feet solutions out there, including Boxee, DivX, Roku, Tivo and Vudu. Integrations have also been completed for a couple of newcomers: Free Stream Media’s FlingoTV and Syabas Technologies’ popbox solutions, with plans to support the Google TV platform once it launches. While the number of users who watch online content through connected TVs and devices isn’t huge yet (thePlatform estimates 4-7 million households or so,) this category is growing like gangbusters and the Seattle-based CDN wants to establish itself as a one-stop-shop for publishers who want to cover all their bases. When asked about how Comcast viewed these OTT services (which many argue are motivating savvy viewers to “cut the cord” of their cable subscriptions,) thePlatform Marketing SVP Marty Roberts said MSOs were looking toward the space as a “learning opportunity” to help improve cable’s own interface and functionality. You know what Sun-tzu said – keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
