Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06.19.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
And it’s confirmed: According to multiple media reports, Facebook today will unveil a new video-sharing feature within Instagram, which Mark Zuckerberg famously snapped up for $1 billion last year. Instagram’s user base numbers over 100 million, which instantly makes the social network a dangerous competitor to Twitter’s Vine, which has been steadily growing in popularity and now has 13 million users across its iOS and Android apps. Details aren’t clear on how video on Instagram would function, though former Reuters Social Media Editor Matthew Keys reported last month that Instagram was testing out a feature that would allow users to create and share five- to 10-second videos. TechCrunch first broke the story that Facebook’s product event today would revolve around a new video product for Instagram.
— In other words: This certainly doesn’t mean the end for Vine, as Facebook and Instagram would have to prove that video can, in fact, work on Instagram. Which isn’t exactly a given. Will users accept and adapt to videos being integrated into the photo-stream? Or does it make more sense to offer the video feature via its own feed?
What’s Trending, a Primetime Emmy-nominated live daily talk show on YouTube, has received an investment from Bedrocket Media Ventures. Hosted by web personality Shira Lazar, the show airs every weekday on its YouTube channel beginning at 3pm ET and focuses on covering the top trending news topics, celebrities, and YouTube videos. The funding amount was not disclosed, tough it will be used by show producers to scale production and expand distribution. What’s Trending is currently hitting 2 million views per month across all of its distribution platforms.
Jimmy Kimmel Live is partnering with Myspace to launch a new concert series featuring extended performances from musicians appearing on the late night show. As part of a yearlong initiative, select artists that perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live will perform an extended set on stage at the show’s Hollywood Boulevard Studio. The performances will be streamed in HD on Myspace directly after the televised broadcast. Bud Light has signed on as exclusive sponsor for three concerts during the summer. The performances will be available on the Jimmy Kimmel Live hub on Myspace.”
Netflix has launched a new section called Netflix Families, which will offer a curated collection of streaming titles categorized by family-centric lists such as “Are We There Yet?” and “TV for Curious Kids.” ffering a reason for why Netflix chose to launch a family-themed section, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that the streaming service witnesses “about a 30% increase in family and kids content viewing hours during the summer.” In addition to the family-appropriate movies and TV shows, the section will also provide info on the best ways to stream the content as well as videos about how other families use Netflix. The section is available to both members and non-members.
Popcornflix’s ad-supported movie streaming app is now available on Android devices in the US with an international launch (Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, and Scandinavia) scheduled for next month. The Popcornflix library spans over 700 full-length feature films and independent titles. Earlier this week, the company announced a deal with Hard Knocks Fighting to add regional MMA action to the service. The app supports Android versions 4.0 and higher.

LongTail Video’s JW Player now supports VAST (an IAB standard) pre-roll ads on smartphones and tablets. In addition, LongTail has released an enhanced version of its ads API, which it says now gives publishers the ability to monetize live streams on mobile and control ad-scheduling across multiple ad networks. The JW Player is one of the most widely used video players on the web; it delivers 5 billion streams per month across 2 million sites.
Facebook’s video ads product likely won’t launch until mid-October, according to a new report from Ad Age. The hold-up is apparently related to new features the social network wants to roll out alongside the video ad product. These new features are still in development. It was originally believed that Facebook was planning to auto-play these video ads as many as three times a day within targeted demos’ news feeds. Based on the new Ad Age report, it appears that Facebook has paid attention to criticisms from those within the industry that believed such a practice would anger and/or alienate users. Per the report, a video ad on Facebook will still appear in the news feed, will still appear as much as three times a day, but now will only auto-play in silence when a user scrolls over the ad. If the user clicks on it, only then will the ad expand to take up most of the screen and play with video.
GetGlue has snagged Evan Krauss away from fellow social TV company Shazam. Krauss is joining GetGlue as its new President. He will be responsible for scaling and leading GetGlue’s business. Based in New York, he will report to GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold. At Shazam, Krauss was the EVP/Global Advertising Sales, where he was instrumental in the creation of Shazam’s second-screen ad business.
NBCUniversal has picked 19 new members to join the Women at NBCU Advisory Board, a group of industry leaders that meets several times a year to focus on issues related to marketing to women. The Board is chaired by Lauren Zalaznick, EVP of NBCUniversal’s Media Innovation & Cross Company Initiatives. The new members include those from several digital media and marketing organizations: Christina Norman (Executive Editor, HuffPost BlackVoices);Dawn Ostroff(President, Conde Nast Entertainment);Michelle Peluso(CEO, Gilt Groupe); and Marisa Thalberg(VP of Global Digital Marketing, Estee Lauder Companies).

Subblime is a new social hub that allows YouTube content creators to create and share lists of their favorite products and services, which their fans can then “favorite” or even purchase by joining the platform. When a user joins Subblime, they are instantly “subbscribed” to lists created by those they follow on YouTube. Beyond the “Fave it” or “Get it” options, users also have the chance to receive special offers and giveaways from the lists/creators they subscribe to. Subblime has already lined up several creators and YouTube networks to create lists and product recommendations, including Elle Walker, DECA’s Kin Community, and YouTube multichannel network Big Frame.
This platform functions as an additional source of revenue for YouTube creators, allowing them to monetize their relationships with their audience via product sales, sponsorships, and product-driven marketing campaigns. Right now, YouTube stars — especially the bigger ones — are looking to expand beyond the video site, on which their revenue model is largely restricted to pre-rolls and sponsorships.
