The Bella Sara Company‘s Bella Sara (www.bellasara.com), the girl-targeted virtual world and brand including trading cards – based on the fantasy world of horses, is set to become a CGI animated feature film set for a 2013 release. Canadian studios Entremedia Digital Films and Buffalo Gal Pictures have teamed to formed Magical Horses, Inc. to produce the CGI production, with post-production being done by Telegael in Ireland. Toronto-based CCI Productions will provide additional production work. Worldwide distribution partners include Entertainment One (eOne) for North American DVD distribution, CCI for international TV distribution including Canadian Television and home entertainment distributors, Universal Pictures Video France for French-speaking territories, and WVG for DVD distribution in Germany. LA-based Foxfield Entertainment is managing marketing and worldwide distribution efforts for the Bella Sara movie. Emma’s Wings: A Bella Sara Tale revolves around Emma, a young girl whose love for horses leads her on an adventure to the fantasy world of North of North, where learns how to accept the challenges she faces to help rescue the horses of North of North. Created by Gitte Odder Braendgaard, Bella Sara uses horses to promote and encourage communication, collectability and creative play in a fantasy world.
Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report) and Allison Janney (The Help, Juno, The West Wing) join the voice cast of DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s new animated feature film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Also jumping into the WABAC machine are Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids, The Office), Ariel Winter (Modern Family) and Stephen Tobolowsky (Californication, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax). Previously announced cast members include Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man, The Three Stooges). Scheduled for release on November 8, 2013, Mr. Peabody & Sherman is directed by Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King) and produced by Alex Schwartz (journey to the Center of the Earth, Bridge to Terabithia) and Denise Cascino (Megamind, Shrek the Third). The movie is being written by Craig Wright (United States of Tara, Six Feet Under) with revisions by Michael McCullers (Baby Mama, Austin Powers in Goldmember). Bullwinkle Studios’ Tiffany Ward and Classic Media’s Eric Ellenbogen are serving as executive producers on the film along with Jason Clark (Monster House, Stuart Little). Mr. Peabody & Sherman had previously been slated for March 14, 2014; a release date now planned for the studio’s Me & My Shadow.
Teletoon Canada unveils its latest original production slate featuring kid-targeted comedies Dr. Dimensionpants and Endangered Species, as well as new seasons of series including Cookie Jar’s Johnny Test (season 6, 26×22), Nelvana’s Detentionaire (season 3, 13×22) both for fall 2013 on Teletoon Canada, and for grown-ups 9 Story’s Fugget About It (season 2, 13×22) debuting fall 2013 on Teletoon at Night. Details about Teletoon Canada’s new series include:
- Cookie Jar Entertainment’s Dr. Dimensionpants (26×22) is slated to bow in winter 2014 on Teletoon. The series revolves around Kyle Lipton, a once easygoing, average 10-year-old kid well at least until an inter-dimensional portal opened up and dropped a pair of Cosmic Power Pants onto his lap. Now Kyle is Dr. Dimensionpants, a superhero with a super attitude who, with the guidance of a talking unicorn named Philip, continually faces inter-dimensional villains bent on destroying his hometown.
- From Nerd Corps Entertainment comes Endangered Species (26×11), which is scheduled to debut in fall 2014 on Teletoon Canada. Endangered species follows what happens when a cantankerous squirrel, an overly optimistic bunny and a neurotic seagull live together in a tree stump. They say it’s nutty. Merl the Squirrel, Sunny Bunny and Gull are three weirdo wild animals who turn everyday activities into total insanity.
LICENSING
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) unveils licensing plans for its boy-targeted action franchise, Ben 10, which coincides with Cartoon Network‘s launch of the new animated series, Ben 10: Omniverse, this fall. Ben 10: Omniverse will make its consumer products debut later this year. CNE extends its long-time licensing relationship with Bandai through 2015, under which the toy maker will continue to serve as the worldwide mater toy licensee for the Ben 10 franchise. Bandai’s deal includes rights for action figures, playsets, role-play items and more in all territories. Signing on as a the interactive partner is D3Publisher, which will release the Ben 10: Omniverse video game for holiday 2012 for the upcoming Wii U system, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS systems. Additionally, Ben 10: Omniverse-inspired youth apparel will also be available at all tiers of retail distribution this fall from licensing partner Freeze.
Bazooka Candy launches a multi-platform merchandising program for its top candy lines tied to Fox‘s new animated feature film Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth Ice Age movie that releases July 13, 2012. The program will include limited edition versions of Bazooka’s candies including Ring Pop, Juicy Drop Pop, Jumbo Push Pop, Baby Bottle Pop and the debut of the new, special edition “Brrry” flavor in character-themed wraps. The promotion will also include merchandisers featuring movie-themed graphics and Ice Age characters at retail. Distribution of the merchandising units includes major grocery, drug, and convenience chains. Bazooka Candy Brands will also debut five new custom games for kids inspired by the movie at Candymania.com (www.candymania.com). Each game invites kids to play as their favorite Ice Age characters, unlock each candy’s special powers, and navigate their own adventures in virtual Ice Age world.
memBrain, a US-based licensing and brand management firm, is tapped to manage the licensing program for will.i.am’s (The Black Eyed Peas) new project LidoKidos, a kid-targeted cross-media platform featuring educational games and apps, music, animation and more. will.i.am is developing the LidoKidos intellectual property in collaboration with memBrain’s licensing team. With emphasis on the development of fundamental discovery skills, LidoKidos will offer a wide range of interactive and immersive content for kids of all ages, including preschoolers, older kids and tweens, for digital media platforms. Julia Pistor (formerly of Nickelodeon), a content executive, is seeking producers and content platforms for LidoKidos initiatives.
Discovery Enterprises International (DEI) if featuring its brands, including those aimed at families such as Discovery Channel’s Explore Your World and Animal Planet, at Licensing Expo this week in Las Vegas.
- Discovery Channel’s Explore Your World is targeted to Boys 6-12 and encourages active play by combining curiosity, nature and technology. Product lines including toys and games from Lisciani Giochi and science-based toys from Oregon Scientific, which are set to launch at retail in Q3 2012. On the publishing side there are two international partners, Grani Publishing will be publish a monthly magazine in the UK, France and Italy and Miles Kelly has just launched a range of survival guides and books with further releases planned for later this year.
- This year sees the launch of the Animal Planet: Wildlands NUKO collectible trading card game from toy company Nukotoys. The game combines collectible cards with a game app that lets kids collect, trade, learn about and interact with 50 exotic animals in the Animal Planet Wildlands. The game will have an international launch bolstered by a licensing program that includes new toy lines from WOW Stuff, a dedicated brand magazine that is now published in 12 territories and fast moving consumer goods promotions.
Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) makes its debut at International Licensing Expo this week under the banner of its preschool channel brand Cartoonito. Cartoonito is a widely distributed preschool TV channel in the EMEA region. The preschool channel, which was initially launched in the UK in 2007 followed by EMEA, now reaches 136 million households in 112 territories with huge viewership in the UK, Spain and Italy. At Licensing Expo this week in Las Vegas, TCNE will showcase several preschool properties including LazyTown as well as third party brands.
- A third season (13×30) of LazyTown is currently in production and will air across Europe in Q1 2013. A new style guide is being developed and the first licensed product lines based on the new LazyTown series will debut at retail in Q4 2013.
- TCNE’s third party preschool brands include: Endemol’s Bananas in Pyjamas; the surreal comedy show Ha Ha Hairies from Welsh indie Adastra Creative; and Vodka Capitol’s Jelly Jamm, which has attracted partners like Bandai (on board as the master toy licensee for EMEA and US) and Sony, which will be publishing the music from the show.
MARKETING
Spin Master teams with McDonald’s to feature Zoobles, a collectible line of small dolls that transform when placed on their ‘Happitat’, in a new McDonald’s Happy Meal offering this 2012. Spin Master and McDonald’s have launched an international campaign that will run in 55+ countries worldwide this year. Beginning June 15, consumer can visit the world of Zoobles at all participating McDonald’s restaurants. Spin Master and McDonald’s featured initial global launch of the Zoobles Happy Meal campaign in 2011.
Suzy’s Zoo launches its newly developed UK and European website, www.witzyandfriends.com. This website focuses on the Little Suzy’s Zoo characters and includes areas to meet the characters, interactive games, puzzles and coloring activities, a crafting section (in collaboration with Joanna Sheen, a licensee for Suzy’s Zoo), Story Time with Suzy’s Zoo creator Suzy Spafford, links to purchase merchandise and a news area with all pertinent stories about the brand. This website launch Lawless Entertainment continues Suzy’s Zoo expansion into the UK and European markets in collaboration with UK licensees Suncrest, Blue Sky, Joanna Sheen and University Games.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a distribution deal that will bring the animated comedy series Grojband to Cartoon Network in the US. Grojband follows Corey and his best friends, Laney and twin brothers Kin and Kon, as they work to drive their garage band to international stardom. In desperate need of solid creative lyrics, Corey finds gold when he stumbles upon the diary of his drama-queen older sister Trina. But in order to keep having great material – Trina’s life needs to continue to be a drama. FME manages the worldwide (excluding Canada) TV distribution, home entertainment and brand licensing rights for the series. Grojband was developed by Fresh TV in association with Teletoon Canada. The series is created by Todd Kauffman and co-directed by Kauffman and Mark Thornton. Executive Producers are Tom McGillis, Jennifer Pertsch, Brian Irving and George Elliott, as well as FME’s Sander Schwartz and Bob Higgins.
Kabillion (www.kabillion.com), a digital kids’ entertainment network, adds the new Cabbage Patch Kids TV series to its Kabillion Girls Rule! (www.kabilliongirlsrule.com) free VOD network beginning this August 2012. Produced by Galen Walker (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie and producer on Paramount’s new TMNT movie), the new Cabbage Patch Kids series features a mix of CGI animation, live action and puppetry. Xavier Roberts created cabbage Patch Kids in 1978.
Universal Pictures acquires distribution rights in Italy to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the next installment of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games movie franchise, which is based on the book series by Suzanne Collins. The first film in the franchise, The Hunger Games, has already grossed $400 million at the North American box office, and is nearing $650 million at the worldwide box office with a nationwide launch in China set for later this week. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will begin production in September 2012 and will be released worldwide November 22, 2013. Universal has previously teamed with Lionsgate and Summit in several territories for movies including the Step Up franchise, What to Expect When You’re Expecting and The Cabin in the Woods.

Nickelodeon names Julie McKenzie as SVP/Apparel, Accessories & Home, Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP). McKenzie will report to Sarah Levy, COO/Nickelodeon Group. In her new position, McKenzie will be responsible for managing existing partnerships as well as developing strategies and new business opportunities for Nickelodeon’s property portfolio in apparel and accessories, domestics and other novelty categories. Most recently, McKenzie was SVP/Sales, Richard Leeds International, where she managed the sales organization with all accounts. She previously served as SVP/Sales, Accessory Exchange and at Wal-Mart stores where she managed the skincare business, and prior to that as buyer in jewelry, small leather goods, daywear, and sleepwear.
