Nexstar Media Group’s owned and operated television stations in Chicago, Norfolk, Virginia, and Lafayette, Louisiana, will become affiliates of The CW Network on September 1, at which point all three stations will begin carrying the network’s primetime content. “As The CW’s #1 affiliate group, Nexstar is very pleased to be bringing the network’s programming to these stations this fall, especially with NASCAR Xfinity series racing and the WWE’s NXT joining a very robust lineup of sports programming, including LIV Golf and ACC college football and basketball,” said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division. “Adding the CW’s programming to them will offer advertisers a variety of new linear and digital opportunities to reach millions of viewers.”

The CW affiliate in Chicago had been WCIU, owned by Weigel Broadcasting. WCIU, Channel 26, is relaunching this summer as an independent entertainment destination, The U. WCIU shows like “Judge Judy,” “Seinfeld,” “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis” and “The Neighborhood” will all continue on the station, joined by sitcoms “The Conners,” “Bob Hearts Abishola,” and “Modern Family,” plus new first-run game show, “The Flip Side.” The U brand was first used on WCIU in 1995.

Fox is looking to sell 30-second Super Bowl LIX ads for at least $7 million each, reports Variety. The starter price for spots for this year’s game, which delivered a record 120.3 million viewers to CBS, was $6.5 million.

Total weekly time with media declined 0.4% in 2023 in the US, to 76.69 hours, according to PQ Media’s Global Consumer Media Usage Forecast, while global time was up 0.3%, to 56.15 hours. Those numbers are expected to rebound this year, with “accelerated growth in 2024 with general elections in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, India and South Africa, as well as the Summer Olympics in Paris, that will drive media usage rates in most of Western Europe that are in the same time zone or within an hour,” said PQ Media CEO Patrick Quinn. “In 2026, we’ll see this same phenomenon in the Americas when the United States, Mexico and Canada tri-host the FIFA World Cup and, again, in 2028 when the Summer Olympics are held in Los Angeles.”

This year’s winners, Diana Jachman and Nathaniel King, will be provided a monetary stipend for college and were featured on last night’s “Special Report with Bret Baier.” Krauthammer, the journalist and physician, was a fixture across FNM’s programming until his passing in 2018.

Tyler Perry Studios has formed a joint venture with Asylum Group to co-develop and co-produce unscripted projects. Antoinetta Stallings has moved into the post of VP of Unscripted Programming at Tyler Perry Studios, best known for its stable of scripted shows like “Sistas,” “The Oval” and “House of Payne.” “I’m excited to bring the world of unscripted content to Tyler Perry Studio,” said Perry. “We’ve never tapped into this area of entertainment before and we’re looking forward to working closely with Asylum to bring unique real world stories to life.”

Prime Video handed a series order to “The Better Sister,” a thriller starring and executive produced by Jessica Biel (“The Sinner”) and Elizabeth Banks (“Call Jane”). Tomorrow Studios is co-producing with Amazon MGM Studios. “Beyond being an enticing thriller full of twists and turns, ‘The Better Sister’ is a gripping story about family feuds and forgiveness,” said Amazon MGM Studios’ head of television, Vernon Sanders. “The brilliant duo of Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks are sure to bring these characters to life in the most authentic way.”

New Regency Television International has acquired rights to Andrew Michael Hurley bestseller The Loney to adapt for television, with “Shogun” director Jonathan van Tulleken onboard. “I’m thrilled at the opportunity to adapt ‘The Loney’,” said van Tulleken. “Its dark allure, complex characters and twisting narrative are a perfect foundation for a deeply compelling and visually immersive series that is an absolute gift for a director.”

Neal McDonough (“Boomtown”) has joined the season two cast of “Tulsa King.” The Sylvester Stallone-starring series is slated to return to Paramount+ in the fall.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s “My Adventures with Superman,” back for season two on Adult Swim on Saturday, May 25 at midnight. The animated series is a coming-of-age story centered on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen.

Commentary series “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson” rolls out with 2-3 episodes per week starting Friday, July 26 on Peacock. “We can’t wait to be a part of the Paris Olympics and help hype up the audience with highlights from the best moments of the Games,” said Hart, who hosts and executive produces with Thompson. “We’re going for gold, everybody!”

Season three of “All American: Homecoming” makes its debut on Monday, July 8 on The CW. The series from it was spun, “All American,” will have its season six, and series, finale on Monday, July 15. The CW also set the premiere date for season two of “61st Street”: Monday, July 22.

Lifetime docuseries “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up” premieres Monday, June 3 at 9p, following Gypsy Rose Blanchard as she experiences life as a free woman.

Guy Fieri, his wife Lori, and his sons Hunter and Ryder are joined by chef Antonia Lofaso for the new season of “Guy’s All-American Road Trip,” kicking off Friday, June 7 at 9p on Food Network.

The race to save humanity resumes with the season two premiere of TNT thriller “The Lazarus Project,” set for Sunday, June 9 at 9p.

Future Today announced the upcoming launch of original content on its free AVOD flagship app, Fawesome. In partnership with Digital Media Studios, the programming slate includes four Fawesome Originals : “Southern Food Truck Wars”; “Game Night”; biographical drama “The Peanut Man,” chronicling the life of George Washington Carver; and “Greenwood Rising,” following the journey of O.W. Gurley, a visionary entrepreneur.

“Rich & Shameless” returns to TNT with new standalone specials this May following the NBA Western Conference Finals. The series tells the true stories of the successes, and failures behind major sports stars. First up: “Brett Favre: Out of Bounds” on May 20 or 22.

Yahoo Advertising announced a collaboration with Kroger Precision Marketing, the retail media business of Kroger, to use Kroger’s first-party purchase-based audiences directly in the Yahoo DSP. “Using first-party data is crucial to future-proof against third-party cookie deprecation, and applying Kroger’s retail data will help to ensure addressability for our advertisers,” said Elizabeth Herbst-Brady, Chief Revenue Officer at Yahoo. “This new offering not only reinforces our privacy-safe approach, but also demonstrates our commitment to interoperability and allows advertisers to activate high-quality data across campaigns through the Yahoo DSP.”

At the IAB NewFronts, FuboTV unveiled a suite of four new CTV ad units. Now available for brands are Marquee content sponsorships, enabling advertisers to curate highly visible content carousels located on Fubo’s home screen; Interactive Ads, designed to increase audience awareness and drive conversion; Pause Ads which can be outfitted with a QR code for additional engagement opportunities; and Enhanced Banner Ads, to give advertisers more precision in reaching their desired audiences. “As a company of firsts, Fubo’s ethos is rooted in innovation and enhancing ad opportunities on our platform is the next iteration of this,” said Dina Roman, SVP, Global Ad Sales, Fubo. “As advertisers are determining their upfront investments, we’re offering a plethora of creative ways to reach our unduplicated, premium audience.”

Integral Ad Science announced a first-to-market integration with Roblox, the immersive platform for connection and communication. Available for advertising campaigns on Roblox later this year, IAS’s Viewability and Invalid Traffic (IVT) Measurement products will provide advertisers increased transparency into the quality of their Immersive Ads within complex 3D environments. “IAS is dedicated to supporting advertisers wherever they are, and that includes providing unique, effective ad measurement solutions across emerging mediums such as immersive 3D environments,” said Lisa Utzschneider, CEO, IAS. “Our partnership with Roblox makes us the first measurement provider to bring enhanced visibility and transparency to the world of 3D immersive experiences on Roblox, giving advertisers the assurance they need that their ads are driving engagement and reaching real users.”

Media platform Teads unveiled an initiative in omnichannel video advertising, merging the power of omnichannel video with the precision of attention metrics to redefine campaign success. This initiative encompasses two approaches: CTV with TVision and Omnichannel with Adelaide. “Over the past year, Teads has made remarkable strides in attention measurement, and as we look to the future, we’re dedicated to pushing the boundaries even further,” said Neala Brown, SVP, Strategy & Operations, Teads. “Our vision is clear: to harness the transformative potential of attention data and translate it into tangible results for our clients, setting a new standard in the industry.”

At its Netflix Is a Joke festival, Netflix announced seven new comedy specials. Deon Cole and Ali Wong will tape their shows at the festival, while Bert Kreischer, Fortune Feimster, Gabriel Iglesias, Jo Koy and Michelle Buteau will get laughs elsewhere.

Antenna TV will air a “’Mother’s Day at the Keatons’ Marathon” featuring curated episodes of “Family Ties” on Sunday, May 12 starting at 5a.

iHeartMedia and P&G Can’t Cancel Pride, a Pride Month event recognizing the impact of music and the impact that LGBTQ+ organizations continue to have on the community, will be available to stream on June 12.

Unable to reach a new carriage agreement with Diamond Sports Group, Comcast said it expects the Bally Sports channels that Diamond manages will exit the platform at month’s end. “We have been very flexible with Diamond Sports Group for months as they work through their bankruptcy proceedings,“ said Comcast. ”We’d like to continue carrying their networks, but they have declined multiple offers and now we no longer have the rights to this programming. We will proactively credit our customers for the costs associated with them.” Responded Diamond, “Comcast has refused to engage in substantive discussions despite Diamond offering terms similar to those reached with much larger distributors of ours. We are a fans-first company and will continue to seek an agreement with Comcast to restore broadcasts, and at this critical juncture for Diamond, we hope that Comcast will recognize the important and mutually beneficial role Diamond and RSNs play in the media ecosystem.”

GOING GLOBAL

The BBC announced that over 300 World Service journalists, or 15%, are working in exile. Following the invasion of Ukraine, BBC News Russian journalists and their families were moved out of Moscow to the Latvian capital of Riga. Now, 39 BBC staff remain in Riga, playing an active part in countering disinformation about the war. On April 12, BBC Russian correspondent Ilya Barabanov was labelled as a “foreign agent” by the Russian justice ministry. “The most difficult part about exile is the lack of direct contact with people. We lost the opportunity to talk to our contributors,” said Barabanov. “The inability to travel around Russia, report from the field, talk to real people – that’s the hardest part about being a journalist in exile.”

Art Moore, WABC-TV New York VP of Programming and a mainstay on “Live with Kelly and Mark” and its predecessors, is retiring in September.
