Nexstar Media Group’s owned and operated television stations in Chicago, Norfolk, Virginia, and Lafayette, Louisiana, will become affiliates of The CW Network on September 1, at which point all three stations will begin carrying the network’s primetime content. “As The CW’s #1 affiliate group, Nexstar is very pleased to be bringing the network’s programming to these stations this fall, especially with NASCAR Xfinity series racing and the WWE’s NXT joining a very robust lineup of sports programming, including LIV Golf and ACC college football and basketball,” said Andrew Alford, President of Nexstar’s broadcasting division. “Adding the CW’s programming to them will offer advertisers a variety of new linear and digital opportunities to reach millions of viewers.”
The CW affiliate in Chicago had been WCIU, owned by Weigel Broadcasting. WCIU, Channel 26, is relaunching this summer as an independent entertainment destination, The U. WCIU shows like “Judge Judy,” “Seinfeld,” “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis” and “The Neighborhood” will all continue on the station, joined by sitcoms “The Conners,” “Bob Hearts Abishola,” and “Modern Family,” plus new first-run game show, “The Flip Side.” The U brand was first used on WCIU in 1995.
Fox is looking to sell 30-second Super Bowl LIX ads for at least $7 million each, reports Variety. The starter price for spots for this year’s game, which delivered a record 120.3 million viewers to CBS, was $6.5 million.
Total weekly time with media declined 0.4% in 2023 in the US, to 76.69 hours, according to PQ Media’s Global Consumer Media Usage Forecast, while global time was up 0.3%, to 56.15 hours. Those numbers are expected to rebound this year, with “accelerated growth in 2024 with general elections in the United States, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, India and South Africa, as well as the Summer Olympics in Paris, that will drive media usage rates in most of Western Europe that are in the same time zone or within an hour,” said PQ Media CEO Patrick Quinn. “In 2026, we’ll see this same phenomenon in the Americas when the United States, Mexico and Canada tri-host the FIFA World Cup and, again, in 2028 when the Summer Olympics are held in Los Angeles.”

Tyler Perry Studios has formed a joint venture with Asylum Group to co-develop and co-produce unscripted projects. Antoinetta Stallings has moved into the post of VP of Unscripted Programming at Tyler Perry Studios, best known for its stable of scripted shows like “Sistas,” “The Oval” and “House of Payne.” “I’m excited to bring the world of unscripted content to Tyler Perry Studio,” said Perry. “We’ve never tapped into this area of entertainment before and we’re looking forward to working closely with Asylum to bring unique real world stories to life.”
Prime Video handed a series order to “The Better Sister,” a thriller starring and executive produced by Jessica Biel (“The Sinner”) and Elizabeth Banks (“Call Jane”). Tomorrow Studios is co-producing with Amazon MGM Studios. “Beyond being an enticing thriller full of twists and turns, ‘The Better Sister’ is a gripping story about family feuds and forgiveness,” said Amazon MGM Studios’ head of television, Vernon Sanders. “The brilliant duo of Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks are sure to bring these characters to life in the most authentic way.”
New Regency Television International has acquired rights to Andrew Michael Hurley bestseller The Loney to adapt for television, with “Shogun” director Jonathan van Tulleken onboard. “I’m thrilled at the opportunity to adapt ‘The Loney’,” said van Tulleken. “Its dark allure, complex characters and twisting narrative are a perfect foundation for a deeply compelling and visually immersive series that is an absolute gift for a director.”
Neal McDonough (“Boomtown”) has joined the season two cast of “Tulsa King.” The Sylvester Stallone-starring series is slated to return to Paramount+ in the fall.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s “My Adventures with Superman,” back for season two on Adult Swim on Saturday, May 25 at midnight. The animated series is a coming-of-age story centered on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen.
Commentary series “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson” rolls out with 2-3 episodes per week starting Friday, July 26 on Peacock. “We can’t wait to be a part of the Paris Olympics and help hype up the audience with highlights from the best moments of the Games,” said Hart, who hosts and executive produces with Thompson. “We’re going for gold, everybody!”
Season three of “All American: Homecoming” makes its debut on Monday, July 8 on The CW. The series from it was spun, “All American,” will have its season six, and series, finale on Monday, July 15. The CW also set the premiere date for season two of “61st Street”: Monday, July 22.

Yahoo Advertising announced a collaboration with Kroger Precision Marketing, the retail media business of Kroger, to use Kroger’s first-party purchase-based audiences directly in the Yahoo DSP. “Using first-party data is crucial to future-proof against third-party cookie deprecation, and applying Kroger’s retail data will help to ensure addressability for our advertisers,” said Elizabeth Herbst-Brady, Chief Revenue Officer at Yahoo. “This new offering not only reinforces our privacy-safe approach, but also demonstrates our commitment to interoperability and allows advertisers to activate high-quality data across campaigns through the Yahoo DSP.”

At the IAB NewFronts, FuboTV unveiled a suite of four new CTV ad units. Unable to reach a new carriage agreement with Diamond Sports Group, Comcast said it expects the Bally Sports channels that Diamond manages will exit the platform at month’s end. “We have been very flexible with Diamond Sports Group for months as they work through their bankruptcy proceedings,“ said Comcast. ”We’d like to continue carrying their networks, but they have declined multiple offers and now we no longer have the rights to this programming. We will proactively credit our customers for the costs associated with them.” Responded Diamond, “Comcast has refused to engage in substantive discussions despite Diamond offering terms similar to those reached with much larger distributors of ours. We are a fans-first company and will continue to seek an agreement with Comcast to restore broadcasts, and at this critical juncture for Diamond, we hope that Comcast will recognize the important and mutually beneficial role Diamond and RSNs play in the media ecosystem.”

The BBC announced that over 300 World Service journalists, or 15%, are working in exile. Following the invasion of Ukraine, BBC News Russian journalists and their families were moved out of Moscow to the Latvian capital of Riga. Now, 39 BBC staff remain in Riga, playing an active part in countering disinformation about the war. On April 12, BBC Russian correspondent Ilya Barabanov was labelled as a “foreign agent” by the Russian justice ministry. “The most difficult part about exile is the lack of direct contact with people. We lost the opportunity to talk to our contributors,” said Barabanov. “The inability to travel around Russia, report from the field, talk to real people – that’s the hardest part about being a journalist in exile.”
