Cynopsis Media presents:
The Primetime Emmy® Awards 2010
07.21.10
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 21, 2010, and this is the first in a special five-part series on this year’s Primetime Emmy® Awards. Each weekly installment will concentrate on one or two award categories with information about each of the nominees as listed ATAS and if provided, a description sent to us by the nominee and/or the nominee’s representatives. Each installment will also open with an editorial about the category, written for Cynopsis by Daisy Whitney. As always with any special edition, we hope you find the information relevant, interesting and informative, and encourage your feedback.
In the category of ” Outstanding Comedy
Series”
Get ready for a dethroning. Yep, this is the year that 30 Rock will walk away without a best comedy Emmy for the first time in the last three years, experts say. But who’ll pull out the rug from the perennial winner. Will it be Glee or Modern Family doing the honors?
To be sure 30 Rock is still – as this year’s guest star Julianne Moore would say in her Boston accent – “wicked funny,” but the new kids on the block are making a case for themselves too. Glee must be considered a leading contender to nab the prize especially after its 19 nominations, the most this year for a comedy series. (By comparison 30 Rock snagged 22 nominations last year.) That early haul of nominations is enough to give “Glee” frontrunner status.
But even though Glee is a very buzzy show so is Modern Family, both a ratings hit and a critic’s darling. “Way too many nominations for Glee! Enjoy them while you can, gleeks, because next year it will fall to around 5 or 6 noms total,” said Chris Beachum, an Emmy expert for AwardsHeaven.net and LA Times.com. He’s staking his claim with Modern Family.
Vlada Gelman, Editor of TV blog Staying In, is rooting for Modern Family, but she’s going to place her bets on Glee. “My heart says Modern Family, but my head says Glee. Either way, 30 Rock is going to get knocked off its throne.”
But there are other contenders and while The Office is unlikely to bring home the gold, there are two dark horses in the running – Curb Your Enthusiasm and Nurse Jackie.
The past season of Curb Your Enthusiasm has been well-received and Nurse Jackie is riding a wave right now as a hot new Showtime hit. It’s unlikely either show will end up with the trophy, but neither one should be counted out. And they might play the role of spoilers. If so, perhaps 30 Rock could make it a four-peat after all.
AND THE NOMINEES ARE …
Curb Your Enthusiasm – HBO – HBO Entertainment
Glee – FOX – A Ryan Murphy TV Production in association with 20th Century Fox TV
Modern Family – ABC – Twentieth Century Fox Television
Nurse Jackie – Showtime – Showtime Presents, Lionsgate Television, Jackson Group Entertainment, Madison Grain Elevator, Inc. & Delong Lumber; A Caryn Mandabach Production
Description: Nurse Jackie debuted in June 2009 providing viewers, and TV Academy voters, with two 12 episode seasons for its first Emmy eligibility. The half-hour comedy is at turns wicked, heartbreaking and funny. Edie Falco stars as Jackie Peyton, a strong-willed — but very flawed — emergency room nurse juggling a double life. A lapsed Catholic, she is addicted to Vicodin and Adderall to get her through the days. Jackie keeps the hospital balanced with her own kind of justice. Every day is a high wire act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses and a husband and two young daughters. NURSE JACKIE has become both an audience and critical success, and is nominated for a whopping 8 Emmy® Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series and Lead Actress. Production on Season 3 begins in New York in September and will return to Showtime next spring with 12 new episodes. The series co-stars Peter Facinelli, Eve Best, Anna Deveare Smith, Paul Schulze, Merritt Wever, Stephen Wallem and Arjun Gupta.
