Top News

Democrats are urging the DOJ to scrutinize the Fox-Roku deal. Rep. Becca Balint (VT) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) led a group of Democratic lawmakers in sending a letter to Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward urging the DOJ’s Antitrust Division to rigorously review Fox Corporation’s proposed $22 billion acquisition of Roku — and to do so without political interference. Key concerns raised include:

The Fox-Roku merger would combine the two largest free, ad-supported streaming TV services in the U.S., potentially giving the combined entity outsized control over how, where, and what consumers watch
Lawmakers warned the deal could eliminate a major competitor, reduce consumer choice, and enable the company to begin charging for a previously free service
The letter cited a pattern of DOJ leadership — including Woodward — allegedly intervening in antitrust enforcement, pointing to the HPE-Juniper Networks settlement and the reported closure of the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger review as examples
Signatories expressed concern that a preference for settlements over trials opens the door to “backroom deals” that weaken antitrust enforcement.
The Takeaway: Democrats are putting the DOJ on notice that the Fox-Roku deal — coming amid rapid consolidation across the streaming and entertainment space, including Disney-Fubo and Paramount-Skydance — warrants serious antitrust scrutiny, not a rubber stamp.

President Trump has dropped BBC Studios from his $10 billion defamation suit against the BBC, but the action is far from over — and may be gaining a new ally.

Trump will continue pursuing claims solely against the British Broadcasting Corporation, dismissing claims against the commercial arm.
At the center of the suit: a “Panorama” edit of Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, speech before the Capitol riot that the president alleges was doctored to misrepresent his words. A trial is expected next year.
BBC Studios — which owns BritBox International — had been named in the suit over claims that the program aired to U.S. viewers via the streamer. The BBC has denied “Panorama” ever ran on BritBox, and Studios has now been let off the hook.
The Financial Times reported that the U.S. government may join in Trump’s lawsuit, quoting filings that told the Florida court it is “considering participating in this litigation.” BBC responded that the “conflict of interest is stark.”
The Takeaway: The decision to drop BBC Studios may signal a tactical narrowing of the suit, but the potential entry of the U.S. government raises the stakes considerably — and gives the BBC a much bigger fight on its hands than a straight defamation claim.

A federal judge on Friday declined to issue an immediate ruling on an emergency bid to block the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger, saying she would decide by July 22. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín heard arguments from a coalition of 12 Democratic states seeking a temporary restraining order — an initial move toward a preliminary injunction that could put the $110 billion deal on indefinite hold.

Roblox is rolling out a significant expansion of its creator ecosystem, introducing AI-powered development tools and a new mobile-first creation feature called Build as part of a broader multi-announcement push in the months ahead.

Build, launching as a dedicated tab within the Roblox mobile app, lets users generate playable game prototypes from text prompts — no coding required. A prompt like “a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest with environmental obstacles” produces a starting point that creators can iterate on, playtest, and publish directly to the platform.
The company will also introduce a new suite of AI-powered tools inside Roblox Studio for creators at every skill level, with testing of those agentic tools beginning July 28.
The moves come as Roblox — which counts 132 million daily active users — looks to lower the barrier to game creation while protecting the quality standards that drive discovery on the platform. Executives were pointed on that last point: the company’s discovery systems are built to surface high-retention experiences, and AI-generated content that fails to attract players will remain unfindable. “If no one plays it — no one can find it,” the company said.
The Bottom Line: The announcements mark a return to Roblox’s founding premise — that anyone can be a game creator — and signal the platform’s intent to scale that vision further than at any point in its 20-year history.

Google wants to put you on camera — no camera required. Two new features for Google Vids, its AI-powered video creator, are designed to streamline video creation: Gemini Omni and personal avatars. Gemini Omni lets users generate and edit video through natural language prompts, with the option to include image references like photos or sketches to guide output. The tool builds on the February rollout of Veo 3.1 and allows for iterative, chat-based editing — swapping backgrounds, adjusting lighting, or adding effects — on both AI-generated clips and self-shot footage. And personal avatars give users a camera-free way to appear on screen. By uploading a selfie and a short voice recording, users can create a digital likeness that delivers scripted messages on their behalf. Together, the features signal Google’s push to make professional-looking video accessible to anyone — whether or not they ever step in front of a lens.

Melissa Gilbert, best known for her role in the original “Little House on the Prairie” (which is currently being rebooted on Netflix) will not be returning to “When Calls the Heart” for Season 14.

Gilbert, who appeared alongside the late Michael Landon on “Little House,” has been guest-starring for the past two seasons of the Hallmark Channel series, which was co-created by her former co-star’s son, Michael Landon Jr.
Gilbert broke the news on Instagram, citing “budget issues” as the reason for her exit. “Many people have asked if I will be returning to ‘When Calls the Heart’ this coming season,” she wrote. “The answer to that is, no I will not.”
The actress expressed gratitude to Michael Landon Jr. for bringing her into the Hope Valley fold. “I will be eternally grateful to my dear friend for giving me the chance to bring Georgie McGill to life,” she wrote, adding that she’s looking forward to “whatever comes next.”
Hallmark confirmed the departure, noting that Gilbert’s storyline wrapped in Season 13. “We adore Melissa and are always grateful when we get to work with her,” the network said in a statement.

The Ultimate Self-Defense Championship is expanding its footprint, which in combat sports terms means it has decided to start throwing punches in multiple directions at once. The series — which has spent three seasons teaching YouTube audiences how to survive parking garage altercations — will launch a female-focused spinoff this summer. A fourth season of the flagship show is also slated for later this year.

Coming Up

“Mortal Kombat II” makes its streaming debut on Friday, July 24 on HBO Max, moving to linear the following night at 8 p.m. on HBO. The martial arts fantasy film was released in theaters on May 8.

Ratings

The All-Star MLB game on Fox and Fox Deportes averaged 8.79 million viewers, to rank as the most-watched all-star game since 2018, up 21 percent over last year.
