DreamWorks Animation is reported the lead bidder for Classic Media, home to iconic characters including Casper the Friendly Ghost, Where’s Waldo, Lassie, He-Man, Noddy and the Lone Ranger among many many others, per NYT. DreamWorks is said to be offering $150+ million for Classic Media, which may force other suitors out of the picture. Classic Media also owns Bid Idea Entertainment, creator/producers of the popular religious-themed animated property VeggieTales.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products and PlayFirst enter into a licensing deal under which PlayFirst will develop and market an immersive mobile game based on the Sony Pictures Animation‘s upcoming 3D animated comedy, Hotel Transylvania. The mobile game, titled Hotel Transylvania Dash, will use the signature Dash time management game mechanic. The game, set to be available via the iTunes App Store on September 20, 2012, will be a new take on PlayFirst’s popular Hotel Dash mobile game, featuring next generation animated art and characters from the new movie Hotel Transylvania, which is scheduled for release on September 28, 2012.
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products inks 30 UK licensees for the new CG animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which premiere in the UK this October 2012. The first TMNT UK products will be action figures from master toy distributor Flair for Playmates Toys and will go on sales in December 2012. Other new UK TMNT license pacts include:
- In addition to Flair, Worlds Apart is developing a bedroom and outdoor play line, while Sambro is launching wheeled goods and arts & crafts. In fashion, TV Mania signs on as the outerwear partner, with Cooneen Misirli handling nightwear. Among the accessories and gift partners are VMC, William Lamb and Zeon.
- Character World and Vogue International have signed homewares license deals and Egmont joins the roster for annuals books alongside the previously announced Parragon as a publishing licensee.
- In stationery and back-to-school arena, Copywrite Designs, Hallmark, moonpig.com and Amscan have all signed for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. BIP, Kinnerton and Lightbody have all inked food licensing deals.

Scholastic Media prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Clifford the Big Red Dog on September 24, 2012, in conjunction with the publication of author Norman Bridwell’s Clifford Collection, a collection of six classic stories from 1963-77, as well as hosting the ‘Biggest Birthday Party Ever’ at Scholastic headquarters in NYC, the latter which is a live event that will be streamed into classrooms nationwide. The overall Clifford celebration will run throughout the new school year and include the debut of new publishing, a birthday card campaign and a national sweepstakes ahead of Clifford’s actual official birthday February 14, 2013. Beginning with the first Clifford book title published in 1963, there are now 136 million books in print, as well as the popular animated TV series, currently in its 12th season, on PBS Kids (US). The series can also bee seen in 30 other countries in 12 languages. Clifford’s 50the anniversary will feature all sorts of components and support including new publishing, apps, a sweepstakes and in December 2012 PBS Kids will host the broadcast premiere the 2004 animated movie Clifford’s Really Big Movie (check local listings). Some of the Clifford birthday celebrations plans include:
- A new publishing program featuring a variety the spring 2013 publication of Clifford’s Birthday Party and a new board book, Clifford’s Bedtime Story. Both the aforementioned Norman Bridwell’s Clifford Collection and Clifford’s Birthday Party will be released in simultaneous e-book and Spanish editions. Additionally Storia, Scholastic’s teacher recommended eReading app for kids, will introduce 20+ Clifford e-books.
- Clifford’s BIG Birthday App for iOS and Android ($0.99) will debut in September 2012. The new app features Emily Elizabeth inviting players to join her in Clifford’s BIG doghouse for a surprise party for Clifford’s birthday. The app includes three interactive and re-playable birthday-themed games, including a leveled word game that builds literacy skills using augmented reality. For adults, who are drawn to the property by their own kids or nostalgia, Scholastic will launch three Facebook apps on Clifford’s Facebook – with activities introduced in November – create/upload your own Clifford birthday cake, in December – a Clifford-themed game and January 2013 will see the launch of a new Clifford’s Big Red Shirt Builder app to create tee shirts.
- Clifford’s Big Birthday Sweepstakes invites fans to enter for a chance to win a Clifford birthday event in their hometown. Additionally, offline, teachers can enter Scholastic Book Club’s Clifford’s BIG Birthday Classroom Sweepstakes for a chance to win a Clifford birthday party for the classroom.
Power Rangers avatars arrive on Xbox Live for Xbox 360. Saban Brands‘ Power Rangers partners with Microsoft to feature a series of new Power Rangers avatars, which are now available and for sale in the Xbox Live store. Specifically available for purchase are six Samurai suits and six Samurai helmets. Additional clothing items including the Deker outfit, Pink Ranger Tee and Red Ranger Tee, as well as props such as the Spin Sword and Megazord, will be available beginning this fall 2012. The new Power Rangers Super Samurai series, which features a new cast of Rangers and villains, can be seen on Nickelodeon with premiere episodes airing Saturdays at noon.
RGH Entertainment, a division of Rubicon Group Holding, brings the 3D animated action/adventure comedy series Ben and Izzy to the US and Canada this month under a deal with Kidobi.com (www.kidobi.com), a new kid-targeted online programming platform. The series revolves around two eleven-year-old boys, Ben, an American, and Izzy, a Jordanian, who set out on historical expeditions to ancient times and places in the Middle East and Africa region with their archeologist grandfathers as they search for lost artifacts from evildoers. The boys are also joined on their adventures by a spirited genie named Yasmine. The series already airs on Cartoon Network Arabia, and is featured various Emirates and Qatar Airlines flights.
Toon Goggles, a kid-targeted free online channel, adds programming from Spain’s BRB Internacional for fans in the US and Canada. Content from BRB will debut on Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com) in the coming weeks on its New Toon Tuesday. BRB programming that will be available on Toon Goggles includes titles such as Gladiator Academy, Super Models, Football Stories, Angus & Cheryl, Suckers, The Mozart Band, Sandokan, and two TV movies entitled Music For Your Eyes (1×75) and Willy Fog: In Journey To the Center of the Earth (1×75)
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) completes new third party broadcast deals for the Nick Jr interactive, CGI animated preschool series Bubble Guppies. New TV deals include TSR (Switzerland’s French language broadcaster) picks up the first season of Bubble Guppies season 1, and TVA‘s (Canada) Yoopa kid’s channel signs on for season 2 of the series. Meanwhile in the Asia Pacific region, EBS (Korea) and Home Choice (Korea) both take season 1 of the series. PBS (Thailand) acquires seasons 1 and 2 via POD Worldwide. In Latin America, Telenica (Nicaragua) signs on for season 1 of Bubble Guppies, TeleDoce (Uruguay) acquires seasons 1 and 2 and Teletica (Costa Rica) takes season 2. Nick Jr’s Bubble Guppies was created by Robert Scull and Jonny Belt (The Backyardigans).
In support of Nickelodeon‘s upcoming new CG animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, the network is launching a new immersive vertical website for the series across 13 regions and localized in 10 different languages. The site features sneak previews of the all new series, character descriptions, information about their respective tools and vehicles, NYC hang outs, as well as games, quizzes and video clips. Additionally, the site includes Twitter feeds and blogs, which are also accessible via smartphones.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
LeapFrog Enterprises appoints Ray Arthur as its new CFO. Arthur will take over the CFO position from Mark A. Etnyre who recently announced his resignation from the company. Most recently, Arthur served as CFO at The Pep Boys Manny, Moe, & Jack (2008-2012). He was previously toiled for seven years with Toys”R”Us – as CFO (2004-6), President and CFO of toysrus.com (2000-3), and as Corporate Controller for the company (1999-2000). Prior to that, he worked in various roles for General Signal Corporation, American Home Products Corporation, American Cyanamid Company and in public accounting.
National Geographic promotes three in its kid-targeted publishing group. Nancy Laties Feresten is upped to SVP/Kids Publishing and Media. Feresten, who joined National Geographic in 1999, will report to Melina Bellows. In her new position, Feresten will oversee the kids content development team (Kids’ Magazines, Books, Digital Products, Website, and Television) and will develop strategy to grow National Geographic products and programs for kids. Feresten had been VP/Editor-in-Chief of Children’s Books. Jennifer Emmett is promoted to VP/Editorial Director, Children’s Books. Emmett previously served as Editorial Director of Children’s Books. Eva Absher moves up to Design Director, Kids Publishing and Media. She oversee design for all of the products of the Kids Publishing and Media group, including magazines, books, web, TV, and digital publishing, and will also serve as the NG Kids visual brand expert for the Society overall.
Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp.‘s Software Group (f/k/a Hollywood Software) appoints Rob Springer as SVP and Product manager/Distribution Solutions, while also promoting Susan Wells to SVP and Product Manger/Exhibitor Solutions and Pamela Kelly to SVP and Product Manager/Content and New Initiatives. Additionally, Larry McCourt joined Cinedigm this spring as SVP/Software and Sales Marketing. These moves are designed to refocus the company’s product development strategies and resources to improve client responsiveness and product expansion including the introduction of new web-based technologies.
