New Programming + Deals

Daily Yahoo! web series Who Knew? has returned for a fifth season. It already has more than 600 episodes in its archives and will reach 800 in the current season, which will feature a slightly upgraded set of graphics and a Toyota sponsorship.

Web series Drunk History made a little history of its own Tuesday night as it made the jump from its life on the Internet to full broadcast on Comedy Central. Chronicling history as told by drunk people, the show featured such funny folks as Fred Willard, Jack Black, Bob Odenkirk, Adam Scott, Dave Grohl, Will Forte, and Jack McBrayer.

Netflix and CBS have expanded their multiyear licensing deal to stream the network’s shows. The pair made a non-exclusive, two-year agreement back in 2011. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Meanwhile, the streaming service also just added such Disney films as Roger Rabbit, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Mulan as well as several British television programs, including Agatha Christie’s Marple: Series 1-4.

Award-winning director Rocky Romano announced the signing of a distribution deal for his big wave surfing web series Maverick Moments with France’s EpicTV. The company has contracted Romano and his production company, The Go Big Project, to create an original series on big wave surfing titled Maverick Moments’ THE 100, which will follow surfers from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels.


Mobile Gaming + Apps

A new app allows users to stream unlimited live TV to Android devices. The US TV & Radio Free app claims that it is simply aggregating free content and it provides a link for “owners and creators” to request that their content be taken down. The content includes such channels as HBO, Showtime, Starz, AMC, Bravo, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, Food Network, FX, MTV, NBC, Nickelodeon, Syfy, TBS, and TNT, among others.
In Other Words: Does this sound like something that rhymes with Careo? Yeah, to us, too. Why this app isn’t getting the kind of grief from content creators that Aereo has gotten in recent months?

It’s probably one of the first shows where an app will play such a critical role: We’re talking about the NBC experiment called The Million Second Quiz. The app, being released at the time of the show on September 9th, will allow viewers to play in live time and enter to be what the network is calling “Line Jumpers.” Jumpers will be flown to New York to compete to win as much as $10 million bucks. Oh, and PS: Word is that Ryan Seacrest is about to be named host. Man, that guy loves to work.

What app has just hit the 100 million download mark? The Bible app YouVersion, which launched with Apple’s App Store five years ago. According to Bobby Gruenewald, the Innovation Leader for YouVersion at in Oklahoma, the app was downloaded 83,000 times the first day the App Store was open, which inspired the company to create 500 versions of the Bible in 300 languages on YouVersion.

Content Everywhere

Verizon is aiming to help broadcasters, studios, content retailers and multichannel video programming distributors with the launch of Verizon Live Events, a service that “joins the video-on-demand and linear channel services also offered on Verizon’s video-optimized media platform.” Live Events is the product of a partnership between Verizon and video-streaming company Origin Digital. The goal is to provide and distribute high-quality live digital video from any source.

When Netflix announces its second quarter earnings on July 22, reporters and analysts won’t be picking up their phones to hear how things are going. Instead, the video-streaming company will broadcast an online video discussion based on questions submitted by email and Twitter. Hosted on Netflix’s investor relations page, the talk will focus on where the company has moved since its first-quarter results, when it brought in $1.02 billion and added more than 3 million streaming members to help boost its total to more than 36 million.

TouchVision, an all-new 24/7 news service aimed at Millennials, is launching this summer and will broadcast on TV, online, on tablets and on phones; content and advertising will be identical on all platforms. It is currently in advanced beta and will debut in the coming weeks. The initial news feed is provided by the Associated Press, CNN, Reuters, Getty Images, and other sources, which will then be supplemented by TouchVision. Some segments will be presented as “News Movies” with a soundtrack and graphics. TouchVision was founded by Lee Abrams, Steve Saslow, and Brandon Davis.


As the heat of summer began to take hold, seems like consumers turned to video on demand for some escape, whether it be through a full-out action/adventure flick or a children’s movie: According to RenTrak‘s OnDemand Essentials service, the top 10 most-viewed on-demand films during the week of June 24 through June 30 were The Call, Identity Thief, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Jack the Giant Slayer, 21 & Over, Relativity, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Snitch, A Good Day to Die Hard, Oz the Great and Powerful, and Despicable Me.

Video ad network YuMe, which filed for an IPO last week, claims to have found a way to send targeted, customized ads to individual households in the hopes of getting supporting family members the message that would help a final purchase take place. With this feature, brands can advertise to any and every connected TV, smartphone, tablet and computer in a residence. Hyundai is the first to test the feature, targeting affluent shoppers in markets that have a “high propensity toward premium vehicles,” according to Ad Age.

YouTube network Fullscreen is hooking up YouTube stars with brands. Its new service helps bring together more than 15,000 YouTube creators with any brand willing to shell out a few bucks to use the service rather than going through an agency to make the same connection. A brand can make a request on Fullscreen, which then goes out the 15,000 creators, who can then pitch themselves and their channel to the brand.

Exec Moves

Swiss-based Transmedia’s current COO Mathieu Sibille has taken the position of Chief Executive Officer while longtime CEO Etienne Mirlesse will now take the position of Executive Chairman. This is all part of a shift in the company as it expands rapidly internationally following the deployment of the iConcerts HDTV channel and digital platforms in over 80 countries, including Mainland China. The company also announced the creation of a UK-based subsidiary iConcerts Entertainment… CNBC Digital has created the position of Senior Editor at Large for Jim Pavia. He will lead CNBC Digital’s development of cross-platform coverage and wills start on July 29… Rob Sorcher and Mike Lazzo have been named Executive Vice President/Chief Content Officer for Cartoon Network and Executive Vice President/Creative Director, Adult Swim, respectively. The pair will now oversee the digital and gaming businesses for each of their areas along with continuing to spearhead the development and production of original and acquired content… Hearst Magazines Digital Media has named Mike Smith as vice president, revenue platforms and operations. It has also promoted MikeDushane to vice president, product development. Hearst recently hired Troy Young as president of Digital Media.

Digital Spotlight of the Day

The Wall Street Journal released a four-minute “immersive, interactive” video on its site Tuesday, Prescribed: A Personalized Tour of Obamacare. The idea is to show viewers first-person accounts of how Obamacare will change some people’s lives when it goes into effect at the start of next year. Viewers can choose which elements and story threads to watch based on their responses to interactive prompts. Different perspectives included are those of someone who is unemployed, self-employed, employed by a Fortune 500 company, wealthy or poor.
