AT&T has introduced its on SVOD service that will allow U-verse TV customers to stream movies on multiple devices. The AT&T U-verse Screen Pack will be available for $5/month, which will give subscribers the ability to stream an unlimited number of movies on U-verse TV, Uverse.com, and via the U-verse app for smartphones and tablets. At launch, AT&T says the Screen Pack will offer film releases from several major studios, with more titles to be added on an ongoing basis.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

A bunch of new original programming news from Hulu: The company has announced that its first original animated series, The Awesomes, co-created by SNL head writer Seth Meyers and Emmy-winning producer and SNL alum Michael Shoemaker, will premiere this coming summer. Also premiering this summer is Hulu’s second co-production with BBC Worldwide Americas, The Wrong Mans, which is a comedic thriller created by and starring Tony Award-winner James Corden and Mathew Baynton, and directed and produced by Jim Field Smith (Episodes). In addition, Hulu will debut a new documentary series this year called Behind the Mask, which “explores the secret world of sports mascots” and is created by Emmy-winner Josh Greenbaum and produced by Occupant Entertainment.

That’s not all from Hulu. The company has also announced the premiere dates of a bunch of series that will be exclusively available on Hulu:

  • Braquo: Drama series that follows a squad of Paris cops who live on the edge of the law. Eight episodes. Tuesdays, beginning January 22.
  • Prisoners of War (Season Two): Israeli Emmy Award-winning series that follows two soldiers as they return to their families after 17 years in enemy captivity. 14 episodes. Spring 2013.
  • Pramface (Season Two): Comedy series that follows teen parents as they try to come to terms with the enormity of having a child. Six episodes. Spring 2013.
  • Fresh Meat (Season Two): BAFTA-nominated comedy-drama series about being a student. Eight episodes. Sundays, beginning January 13.
  • The Only Way is Essex (Season Four): A “dramality” series in the vein of Jersey Shore, Laguna Beach, and The Hills. 10 episodes. February 2013.
  • Mother Up!: A half-hour “adult animated comedy” starring Eva Longoria as a former high-powered music exec who takes on the challenge of motherhood in suburbia. 13 episodes. Fall 2013.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is getting another season. According to The New York Times, Seinfeld and Sony Pictures Television have decided to renew the show for batch of 24 new episodes. Available on Sony’s ad-free video service, Crackle, the show is pretty much what the title says: Seinfeld and one of his funny friends get into one of his cool cars, go get coffee or a bite to eat, and talk about anything. The first season of the show consisted of 10 episodes and featured the likes of Larry David and Ricky Gervais.

Russell Simmon’s Rush Digital Media is partnering with AwesomnessTV to launch a new YouTube channel in spring 2013 called All Def Digital (ADD). ADD’s stated goal is to produce and share “cutting-edge programming from diverse talent to help broaden YouTube’s audience, much in the way Def Comedy broadened HBO”. Rush Digital Media and AwesomenessTV will work together on the production, operation, and marketing of the channel, which is one of the new slate of channels that’s being funded by YouTube as part of the site’s ongoing original programming initiative. Prior to launching the channel, Simmons will curate his favorite videos, shows, and creators on the channel as well as reach out to fans to determine what type of programming they’d like to see.

Investigation Discovery has launched an interactive multiscreen experience tied to its newest crime series, Redrum, which premiered last night at 10pm ET/PT. Using Fourth Wall Studio’s transmedia entertainment platform Rides.TV, the experience begins with a digital short film that presents a murder. The user is then encouraged to piece clues together in order to figure out the motives behind the character’s murder. For example, users will be able to use their mobile phones to “eavesdrop” on calls between characters as well as “intercept” blackmail photos. As the story begins to unravel, users are also allowed to vote on whose actions really led to the crime. The short was written by author Maureen McHugh and novelist Sean Stewart, and directed by Daniel Fries.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

IGN has unveiled a new “Integrated Content Everywhere” ad unit, which allows sponsors to reach engaged users by piggybacking on to content they’re already consuming on IGN Entertainment. Based on the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Rising Stars 300×1050 Portrait Unit, the unit pumps in related content from IGN and “social elements” and ties it to brand messages and pre-roll video. It allows brands to reach users with initial in-ad messaging and then follow them as they click-through the unit to IGN articles, videos, and live stream links. Speed Stick has signed on to be the launch sponsor of the new ad unit during IGN’s ongoing coverage of CES this week.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Univision has inked a deal with Samsung Electronics to bring UVideos, the network’s bilingual digital video network, to all 2013 Samsung Smart TVs, connected Blu-ray players, and home theater systems. Beginning this spring, the UVideos app will come pre-installed in Samsung’s personalized app section, allowing the device owners to watch Univision’s lineup of daytime, primetime, and entertainment, sports, and news programming in English and Spanish. The UVideos app for Samsung devices will also feature a synchronized social stream, which allows viewers to converse with friends, show talent, and others while watching a video.

T-commerce platform provider Delivery Agent has inked a deal with Samsung Electronics to enable Samsung Smart TV owners to shop for products seen on the show they’re watching, in real time. Viewers can do this via their Samsung Smart TV remote or by accessing the Shop the Shows app in the app marketplace. To enable such real-time shopping, Delivery Agent has exclusive commerce partnerships with over 500 TV shows on over 50 networks.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

Sony Pictures Television’s ad-supported video streaming service Crackle has named James Smith SVP/Digital Media Sales. Smith will be responsible for leading the Crackle national ad sales effort in the US. Crackle has also named Rene Santaella VP, General Sales Manager. Santaella will manage the business of ad revenues for Crackle with a focus on ad solutions, media innovation, monetization strategy, media planning, yield management, and trade marketing. Both Smith and Santaella will be based in Culver City.

Tim Morse has joined online video ad company Adap.tv as its new Chief Financial Officer. He will oversee finance, M&A, and human resources. Formerly, Morse was CFO at Yahoo, and spent some time as the digital media company’s interim CEO in the fall of 2011.

World news site GlobalPost is opening a new sales office in New York City and has appointed industry veteran John J. McMenamin as its new Chief Revenue Officer. He will oversee all sales operations for GlobalPost from Manhattan. Joining McMenamin in the NY office will be GlobalPost’s newly appointed National Account Director, Orin Shands. During his career, McMenamin has held positions at companies like Cablevision, Dow Jones, NBC, and Turner Broadcasting.

Miramax has promoted Beth Minehart to EVP/Global Digital. She will continue to be responsible for all digital initiatives and sales across the company, and will report to Miramax’s interim CEO Steve Schoch.

January means several things, one of which is that it’s time for the BCS Championship (what a destruction Monday night, eh?) and the NFL Playoffs. This year Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) has partnered up with Ritz Crackers to do a nifty little branded video and contest campaign that ties very well into the current sports atmosphere. Emeril’s Game Day Recipe Round-Up is a new 13-part video series on MarthaStewart.com’s Game Day video hub that features the famous chef providing cooking tips and favorite game day recipes. Two of the videos feature Emeril demonstrating New Orleans-inspired recipes with Ritz Crackers (the Super Bowl this year is in New Orleans and Emeril has several restaurants in the city). The videos will be available on the hub between now and February 5.

There’s also a contest that will allow fans to submit New Orleans-inspired recipes, which must include Ritz Crackers and one of ten ingredients hand-selected by Emeril. The grand-prize winner will receive a trip for two to New Orleans, which will include airfare and hotel accommodations, $2,250 in spending money, and a gift card for dinner at one of Emeril’s three New Orleans restaurants, among other prizes.
