Cynopsis: Kids!
01/06/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 6, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Do you have plans to buy a 3D TV? Well if you do, you’ll now have something to watch on it.  Discovery Communications, Sony Corporation and IMAX Corporation unveil plans for a joint venture to develop a 24/7 3D TV network for the US.  Additionally, ESPN announced its plan to launch a 3D channel on June 11, 2010, simultaneous the World Cup.  Now where’d I put those 3D glasses …

  • Discovery, Sony, via Sony Corporation of America, and IMAX each will be equal partners in the joint venture and will govern via a board featuring members from all three companies.  With a goal of driving consumer adoption of 3D TVs and giving the network long-term leadership in the 3D home marketplace, the new network will feature 3D content from a range of genres including kid-targeted, natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, and motion pictures programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment, IMAX and other third-party providers.  Responsibility for the 3D network is split up with Discovery handling network services, including affiliate sales and tech support, as well as 3D TV rights to Discovery content and cross-promotion on its US TV networks.  Sony will provide advertising/sponsorship sales support, and will license TV rights to current/future 3D feature films, music-related 3D content and game 3D content, as well as offering cross-promotion at retail outlets.  Imax will also license TV right to upcoming 3D films, promotion via its O&O theaters in the US and a suite of proprietary and patented image enhancement and 3D technologies.
  • ESPN plans to televise a selection of sports programming in 3D including the Summer X Games, NBA Games, and college basketball and football games, per USA Today.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will officially premiere its new live-action comedy, Big Time Rush (20×30), on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, at 8:30p.  Produced in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment and created by producer Scott Fellows (Ned’s DeClassified School Survival Guide), Big Time Rush follows the adventures of four hockey-loving teen boys movie to from Minnesota to LA for a chance at pop music stardom.  Big Time Rush stars Kendall Schmidt (AI, Gilmore Girls), James Maslow (iCarly), Logan Henderson (Friday Night Lights), and Carlos Pena (Ned’s DeClassified).  The series will feature original songs performed by the group under the guidance of Sony Music with music by well-known songwriters and producers, including Desmond Child, Matthew Gerrard, Charlie Midnight, Kevin Rudolph and Eman.   The Big Time Rush show page ( www.nick.com/shows/big-time-rush/ ) will feature exclusive video clips from new episodes, photos, music and games.  Additionally, the one-hour movie that had a sneak peek in on the net in November is available now through January 24 on VOD and from February 1, a Big Time Rush category will debut with bonus content (e.g. music videos, episodes).  Furthermore, a sneak peek of the show will be available on mobile on demand.

Disney Channel premieres its new pop music-centric original movie StarStruck on Sunday, February 14 at 8p, with a video simulcast on Disney Channel Mobile.  The StarStruck soundtrack (Walt Disney Records) will debut Saturday, February 6 on Radio Disney and will be available in stores, Tuesday, February 9.  StarStruck revolves around a Midwestern girl (Danielle Campbell) who develops a relationship with a Hollywood heartthrob/pop star (Sterling Knight, Sonny With A Chance) after a chance meeting.  Troubles develop when the pop singer denies knowing her to the media.  To support for the movie includes: the StarStruck music video performed by Knight premieres on Disney Channel Friday, January 15, with the single debut on Radio Disney the same day; January 16 will see the music video available on DisneyChannel.com, Radio Disney and Disney.com; and the movie will preview begins Sunday, February 7 on Disney Channel On Demand.

Japan’s Adness Entertainment licenses the live-action series, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, to Cartoon Network in Asia and Australia.  Under the deal Cartoon Network will air 40×30 episodes of the boy-targeted series beginning in 2010 in Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, among others.  Produced by Adness Entertainment, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is based on the original series, Kamen Rider Ryuki, produced by Toei Company.

The Library of Congress names author Katherine Paterson (Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob Have I Loved, The Great Gilly Hopkins, The Master Puppeteer) as the new National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.  A two-time winner of the National Book Award and Newbery Medal, Paterson will serve in this role for 2010-2011, and has selected Read for Your Life as the theme for her platform.  She succeeds author Jon Scieszka, who was the first to hold this title (2008-2009).  The National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature was created to focus on the importance of young people’s literature and lifelong literacy, education and development and improving the lives of kids/young adults.  The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Children’s Book Council (CBC), and Every Child a Reader, the CBC foundation, are the sponsors of the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature initiative ( www.read.gov/cfb/ ).

Lerner Publishing Group acquires Ohio-based Darby Creek Publishing, which publishes books for kids through young adults, from Media Source, the parent company of Junior Library Guild and The Horn Book.  Beginning this month Darby Creek will operate as an imprint of Lerner Publishing Group, bringing about 58 titles to Lerner.  Upcoming plans for the Darby Creek imprint include publishing Night Fall, a new six-book horror series set for release in fall 2010, and expanding in several fiction categories for young readers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic Media enters into a agreement with America Family Insurance, under which the Wisconsin-based insurance company will serve as the first corporate sponsor of Scholastic’s Clifford Be Big campaign.  A multi-year marketing program, Clifford Be Big aims to get everyone to make the world a better place by making big actions and share in Clifford’s Big ideas (share, play fair, have respect, work together, be responsible, be a good friend, help others, be truthful, be kind and believe in yourself).  The initiative also includes The Be Big In Your Community Contest that is extended nationwide in conjunction with the HandOn Network, a nationwide volunteer management organization.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) renews and expands their co-branding partnership between the NBA and the network’s boy-targeted property, Ben 10: Alien Force.  Under the new deal, which covers the 2009-10 NBA season, the partnership builds on the co-branded youth apparel line from Overstuff that debuted at the 2009 NBA All-Star Game and this year will introduce new designs featuring Ben 10: Alien Force characters with NBA league and team logos and mascots.  Additionally, the deal expands to include a new c0-branded line of basketballs from Spalding.  The new products will be introduced this February at the NBA All-Star 2010 game in Dallas, and will also be available at NBA arenas, the NBA Store (NYC), on CartoonNetworkShop.com and the NBAStore.com, as well as other retail outlets.

Chapman Entertainment appoints Tomy as its new master toy licensee for Rah Rah The Noisy Lion (52×10), the preschool-targeted property acquired by CBeebies.  According to the five-year deal, Tomy acquires the distribution rights in the UK, France, Benelux and Germany.  The company also has global manufacturing rights excluding US, for plush, arts & craft and infant preschool products including figurines, playsets mega sketcher and soft toys expected to be on shelf in late 2011.  Created by Mackinnon & Saunders, Rah Rah The Noisy Lion will be produced with Chapman Entertainment (Fifi and the Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car).

STONE SOUP

If you’ve looked around or talked to friends recently you probably noticed that more and more younger kids have cell phones, but just how many more are there?  Well, there has been an increase of +68% of kids with cell phones in the past five year, according to MRI‘s recently release America Kids Study.  Specifically, 20% of US Kids 6-11 owns a cell phone, this is up +11.9% from 2005, with the biggest increase among K10-11, which is up +80.5%, in the five-year period.  Not surprisingly boys were later to the cell phone ownership game, with the last three years showing the biggest growth among boys up by +47.6% since 2007, versus an increase of +17.2% among girls.  MRI believes that some of the increase, particularly with boys, is the result of wireless providers targeting parents and kids with kid-friendly phones and I’d add in the increase in kid-targeted wireless mobile content.  So, what are kids doing most with their cell phones? Survey Says… Top Cell Phone Activities for Children Ages 6-11:

Activity                                                   %

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  On this day in 1956, this iconic character walked on two legs for the first time. Who is he?  SNOOPY  Kudos to: Daniel Errico-FreeChildrenStories.com/NY; Jeffrey Lesser-Little Airplane Prods/NY; Rich Thomas-Disney Book Group/NY; Russ Camlet-NBCU/NY; Michael Hawkins-PromoDoctors/Irving; Patrick Rieger/Burbank; Rob Chatlin-FX Network/LA; Steve Behling-Disney Publishing Worldwide/Glendale;

Today’s Trivia Question:   Cheri Brand was the original and inspiration for this 1958 Ladies Home Journal print ad, as illustrated by her mother. The art work was sold for $2500 to the advertiser.  The ad was later spoofed on the cover of Esquire and again on the cover of Rolling Stone, by Carmen Electra and Jim Carrey, respectively.  What was the original advertiser?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
