Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/06/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 6, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Taking a page from Steve Jobs announcements of the past, Google unveiled its distribution model-busting Nexus One smartphone yesterday, on the eve of CES 2010. The Android 2.1-based device will retail on Google.com for $500 for an unlocked version or $179 with at 2-year contract with T-Mobile. Google also stressed that apps from outside vendors can run on the phone, contrasting Apple’s sometimes draconian hold over App Store hopefuls. The Nexus One is slightly smaller and lighter to the iPhone (11.5 mm thick, 130 grams), sports a 3.7 inch “AMOLED” display and ships with a 5 megapixel camera with flash and video capabilities. And like the iPhone, it’s built to showcase the software Google is most proud of. On board apps include Gmail, Google Voice, Google Maps and one-click uploads and gallery access to YouTube, Facebook and Picassa. One of the cooler things about the interface is its “Live Wallpaper,” presenting images that sit behind widgets that are animated and move when a user touches the screen.

The guild noted that insuring open access to content had nothing to do with controlling piracy – a clear rebuttal of a common ISP argument – and also warned the Commission to beware of the power that a newly merged Comcast and NBC Universal may have on distribution of digital content.

Nielsen
has conducted a global survey of more than 27,000 consumers in 54 countries to gage attitudes about paying for online content and to determine which content types consumers were most willing to support financially.  The findings show that many consumers are willing to pay for online content or are open to increased ads to defray the costs – not surprisingly they’re more likely to pay for music, movies, games and professionally produced video than for podcasts, blogs or consumer generated video. Nearly half (47%) of global respondents said they would put up with more ads to subsidize free content, but that willingness fluctuates by market. Some 57% of respondents in the Middle East, Africa and Pakistan are open to the more advertising – as are 55% of those in Asia Pacific. But just 40% of North America respondents and 39% of European respondents are willing to put up with more ads.

Fiber Optic internet and TV service providers like Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse, still only available in 1 out of every 4 households, were found to be the best broadband service providers in the U.S., according to a new Consumer Reports survey. Bundles were found to be a good deal in general, but customers are encouraged to renegotiate with their providers after initial promo price deals expire. The survey also found that 20% of homes have now cut all wired phone services in favor of just cell phones.

Seeing that I’m headed to gadget Nirvana today (CES, that is,) we thought we’d reserve this space for gadgets this week. Check out the site for the L5 Remote, an iPhone app/hardware accessory that attaches to your iPhone’s USB port then sends IR signals to your TV’s and AV components. Like any horribly confusing Universal Remote, this elegant little app can be used to control almost anything in your living room, but the drag-and drop interface is completely customizable. You can keep only the buttons you use and re-arrange the interface to emphasize tasks you most often perform. The L5 is expected to retail for about $50; it’s not out yet, but the site will take your email and notify you as soon as it’s available.
