The electronics industry has struck out so far with this whole 3D thing but much hope is now being pinned on the Connected TV revolution. Sales of web-connected TVs, which offer access to applications similar to the apps you enjoy on your smartphone, are already expected to account for 21% of Global TV shipments for 2010, according to a new report from DisplaySearch, with sales expected to grow to over 122 million units by 2014. Emerging markets will play a key role, with Eastern Europe forecast to grow from 2.5 million connected TVs shipped in 2010 to over 10 million in 2014. Some 12% of flat panel TVs sold in China in 2010 will also have net capability. The downside of all this is, what if everyone starts using their TVs for web surfing? “With Netflix accounting for 20% of peak internet traffic in the US, it’s reasonable to ask if the infrastructure can cope,” asked Paul Gray, Director of European TV Research for DisplaySearch.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
G4 is featuring a two-hour special live from CES on Thur. Jan 6. At 7 pm ET, calling on personalities such as Chris Hardwick, Dave Matthews and new Attack of the Show! co-host Candace Baily to report on the latest and greatest. The network also features myriad coverage of press conferences, product demos and floor happenings via online and mobile.
 
CBS Television and Radio will again rely on its CNET subsidiary for live streaming coverage from the Consumer Electronics Show, available in apps for iPhone and iPod Touch, Android, and Blackberry; on the CNET Mobile site or CES iPad site; Twitter; Facebook and Livestream.com. The site will feature commentary, streamed press conferences and live coverage of select sessions.
 
Oxygen Media
is revamping its watercooler app for its OxygenLive platform and is finally adding a companion app to bring the experience to iPad, iPhone and Android. OxygenLive: Obsessed kicks off during the premiere of Bad Girls Club on Jan. 10 with a special live 30 minute pre-show event that will enable fans to interact with cast members via Twitter and Facebook. Similar interactive pre-shows will precede each episode this season.

Web mockumentary Pretty, the Series, a send-up of kiddie beauty pageants, is inviting Knots Landing star Joan Van Ark on for its final episode of its second season. She joins a reunion of the entire season’s guest stars.
 
Speaking of former TV stars, check out this new celebration of James Van Der Beek’s (Dawson’s Creek) 15 minutes of internet fame on Funny or Die.
 
Raw radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge is leaving SiriusXM for Tampa-based ioWorld Media. IWDM has picked up exclusive rights for Bubba’s syndicated, terrestrial morning talk show to stream on its 73-channel music service, radioIO.com, where exclusive new uncensored content will also be featured.

Ziff Davis
announced a new ad targeting technology that will cull data from its online properties to target ads to audiences looking to purchase technology merchandise. One of the first ad targeting platforms focused entirely on the tech vertical, BuyerBase will synthesize product-specific research and shopping activity, as opposed to just general browsing behavior. The company also announced the acquisition of LogicBuy.com, a popular provider of tech deals and coupons.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Research giant the NPD Group has agreed to acquire Scottsdale, AZ-based analyst-based research firm In Stat LLC for an undisclosed amount. In Stat tracks trends in mobile phones, connected devices and digital entertainment serving clients including technology vendors, equipment manufacturers, service providers and media companies.
 
Samsung and 3D specialist RealD announced a plan to jointly develop a new technology dubbed RDZ that will bring brighter 3D TVs to market that work with 3D glasses used in RealD-equipped movie theaters.
 
CE device manufacturer Funai Electric Co., Ltd. (purveyors of Philips, Emerson, Magnavox and Sylvania) and iTV programming platform ActiveVideo Networks struck a deal that will make Funai the first consumer electronics manufacturer to bring connected TVs and Blu-ray players to market based entirely on a cloud-based solution. (Until now ActiveVideo has struck partnerships with cable operators to reach homes through set-top boxes.)
 
RSG Media Systems
introduced a new digital overnight reporting service synthesizing data for on-air, internet, mobile, and digital from sources such as Omniture, comScore, Nielsen and Google, as well as the programmer’s own internal systems.
 
UK-based software solution provider MGt has launched a new micropayment tool to enable content owners, operators and CE manufacturers to offer a unified payment system across multiple devices including connected TVs, iPads, Android devices. The “PayWizard” system, which enables publishers to charge for content and services on a per-transaction basis, includes an e-wallet that supports payments in multiple currencies and payment methods.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
U.S Advertising spending increased 6.4% thorough the first 9 months of 2010 to reach $94.06 billion, according to a new report from Kantar Media, led by a surge in political-driven Spot TV (+27.8%) and Spanish Language spending (+11.9%). Internet display advertising had the second largest growth rate among the media sectors, up 7.7% compared to the year ago period, with Outdoor close behind with a gain of 7.3%. P&G remained the top brand advertiser, increasing its budget by 18.7% during the period to $2.2 billion, despite displaying flat Q3 expenditures.

Vizio
unveiled a new ecosystem around its Internet Apps platform that will integrate app content across multiple platforms including Vizio HDTVs, Blu-ray players, SmartPhones and Tablets. VIA Plus HDTVs and Blu-rays will incorporate Google TV and feature a premium Bluetooth QWERTY universal remote with touchpad, dual-band 802.11n built-in Wi-Fi and an enhanced onscreen navigation system including search and a full web browser.
 
Amazon has expanded its free Kindle book reading app to tablets built on both the Android and Windows LCD operating systems.
 
Oberon Media has acquired the exclusive licensing rights for the classic Russian video game Tetris for internet-connected televisions, Blu-ray players and OTT devices. Look for the first new TV version of Tetris during Q1 of 2011.

Promoting a show that has such an expensive sell through – a premium cable package – means utilizing all the platforms at your disposal and Starz has made a Herculean effort for its Spartacus franchise. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, based on a prequel miniseries of the same name, will launch in limited beta on Jan. 6 as a Facebook game to the first 10,000 fans who register as well as a multimedia script app for the iPad. (The full launch of the game will happen Jan. 20, the day before the Gods of the Arena prequel premiers on Starz.) Social game developer 6waves (Mall World, Kingdoms of Camelot) was tapped for the Facebook game, a logical fit given its pedigree as an action-oriented developer. The iPad Script App follows in the footsteps of a similar app released around Starz’ The Pillars of the Earth miniseries, offering animated interactive full episode scripts on an a la carte basis for .99 cents each, along with exclusive video clips, director’s notes and other goodies. Some may see this as preaching to the converted – many of Starz’ 750k+ Facebook fans are probably already subscribers – but if the game can go viral a huge new audience could be tempted to order up the channel or buy the DVD.
