Cynopsis: Kids!
01.30.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 30, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Monsters Ink: What’s it take to bring a beloved book to the small screen? Disney Junior VP, EMEA, Beth Gardiner gave CynKids a sneak peak at new series “Henry Hugglemonster,” based on the story “I’m A Happy Hugglewug” by Irish children’s laureate Niamh Sharkey. The music-laden show bows Feb. 8 in the U.K. and in April in the U.S., and features Spice Girl Geri Halliwell in one episode.

Gardinar says the antics of the middle child in a chaotic, lovably monstrous family jibed perfectly with what she calls the Disney Junior curve. “We think about what fits in with what’s already on air. We were talking a lot about moms and dads sitting down and watching shows with their kids and thought, ‘We’ve got Pirates. We’ve got DocMcStuffins,’ so there’s a doctor in the house. We needed to show a really interesting monsterly family. It’s so relatable.”

The most challenging task is “staying true to the characters and being honest with our audience,” Gardiner says. To help, every wholly owned Disney Junior show goes through a kid vetting process early in development. “We gauge whether it’s relatable and funny in the right places, see what makes them laugh–and when something doesn’t work.”

Content

Mattel teen superhero Max Steel is set for his U.S. TV debut March 25 in a new animated Disney XD series, co-produced by Mattel and FremantleMedia Enterprises. The character, already a hit among boys in Latin America, is also getting his own online content hub including interactive games, video and music; a mobile gaming app and a slew of additional consumer products. A series of Max Steel graphic novels will roll out in February through a new Mattel partnership with VIZ Media LLC.

Sprout’s original series The Chica Show joins the NBC Kids Saturday morning lineup Feb. 9, doubling its reach to 115 million U.S. homes. The Mario Lopez-voiced series debuted on Sprout in November as one of the net’s highest-rated original series premieres to date. Sprout is hosting an online sweepstakes where the Grand Prize winner will win a walk-on role during season 2 of The Chica Show.

More entertainment and sports celebs announced for Cartoon Networks’ Hall of Game Awards, Feb. 11. Jessica Alba, Ryan Lochte, Mario Lopez, McKayla Maroney, Victor Cruz, and JJ Watt join hosts Shaquille O’Neal and Nick Cannon for the third annual awards.

Canadian kids net Teletoon, in 7.4 million homes, will launch original series Just Kidding on Feb. 3. From the creators of Just For Laughs Gags, each episode features kids pulling 10-15 scripted pranks on adults, from catapulting marshmallows at passersby to putting live birds in an ice cream cone dispenser.

Disney doings: In celebration of Black History Month, Disney Junior will air “We Are Doc McStuffins” interstitials featuring the series protagonist, a young African-American girl alongside three real female African-American physicians sharing what their jobs entail, and saluting their heroes… Disney Junior is inviting “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” fans to submit videotaped birthday greetings for Jake on DisneyJunior.com that could land them an appearance on Disney Channel and Disney Junior. Select winners will be chosen for air Feb. 25-March 1, leading up to a birthday-themed new episode March 1… The Russo family returns to Disney Channel for a special Wizards of Waverly Place movie “Alex Vs. Alex,” premiering March 15… Season 2 of Disney XD series Lab Rats premieres Feb. 25 at 9p.

iCarly big bro Jerry Trainor will star and produce Nick at Nite’s new yet familiar-sounding live-action family comedy Wendell & Vinnie, premiering Feb. 17. The series follows the travails of a 30-year-old bachelor who suddenly becomes legal guardian of his precocious nephew.

More Kids Stuff

In what might be a widening trend across the industry, Cartoon Network is eschewing a single Upfront event and taking its show on the road to key cities. Here are some highlights of the new programming it’s touting: On the heels of the Jan. 24 premiere of the new Nick Cannon comedy series Incredible Crew, Cartoon Network Studios will produce three original animated comedy series – Steven Universe, Uncle Grandpa and Clarence – each based on the net’s shorts program, plus two original animated specials based on series hits Adventure Time and Regular Show. A new CG-animated special starring early Cartoon animated stars The Powerpuff Girls is also on tap for later this year, and will feature an original song performed by Ringo Starr. Also upcoming are two new half-hour series based on DC Comics heroes and Warner Bros. Animation–Teen Titans Go! and Beware The Batman; a new animated series from Lego, Legends of Chima; a new animated musical-comedy series, Grojband, from FremantleMedia; and a new series iteration of The Tom and Jerry Show.

Sen. John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV last week reintroduced legislation instructing the National Academy of Sciences to study the effects of violent content–including video games and television–on children. “I’m reintroducing my bill to study the effect that violence in media and video games has on our children’s well-being because Congress should do everything we can to address gun violence,” said Rockefeller. The Violent Content Research Act of 2013 is co-sponsored by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

Toronto-based CGI outfit Guru Studio is expanding into 2D animation and interactive content. The company says the 2D animation division, headed by producer Amy Robson, will complement its CGI work and focus on creating content for older-skewing audiences. Guru has allocated a 6,000-square-foot studio for 2D animation and is hiring 40 new animators. The New director of interactive Laurinda Shaver will helm the interactive division. Shaver’s first projects will be to develop games for series Justin Time, and preschool project Port Little.

Cablevision on Jan. 25 added authenticated TV Everywhere services Watch Disney Channel, Watch Disney XD and Watch Disney Junior to its Optimum service mix.

The Kidz are most definitely all right. The 23rd incarnation of Kidz Bop debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 albums chart last week. Kidz Bop partnered with The Agency Group to book live performances for the faces and voices behind the brand. The group’s seven-episode web series, Kidz Star USA, is currently running on Vevo.

Kidscreen Notes: Women In Animation International and animation tech company Toon Boom are hosting an end-of-show reception Friday, Feb. 8, at the Hilton N.Y., to wrap the Kidscreen conference. All are welcomed.

Licensing

Ireland-based Sixteen South Television named The Jim Henson Company’s third party licensing label, HIP (Henson Independent Properties) exclusive worldwide distributor for its new animated preschool series Driftwood Bay. Season one of Driftwood Bay is in production with delivery slated for spring 2014.

Licensing agency Ink is now representing The Smurfs brand across the Nordics, adding to its existing involvement with the property in Eastern Europe… U.K.-based WOW Toys has been awarded a license by animal welfare charity the RSPCA to produce My Pocket Pet toys for the preschool market beginning in February. Each pet comes with an RSPCA activity sheet… Nick Jr. series Tickety Toc is headed to smaller screens this spring via a licensing deal between Zodiak Partners and Cupcake Digital to develop 12 digital story experience apps. The deal was brokered by Established Brands in the U.S. and Canadian licensing agent Studio Licensing, on behalf of Zodiak Kids. Toy manufacturer Just Play and Anchor Bay Entertainment plan a launch of Tickety Toc consumer products for fall 2013.

More Kids Apps: Kiev-based software developer Timecode developed an iPad app based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale Snow Queen… Just in time for the Super Bowl – DeNA’s NFL Matchups social card game debuts this week as a free app for iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Scholastic Media is adding to its LeapFrog coffers with the publication of Super Animal Genius, available as both a cartridge game and app. Designed for kids 5-9, it features nine mini-games that introduce young learners to hundreds of facts about animals and their habitats.

If the shoe fits: Nickelodeon and Fila are teaming for limited-edition adult sneakers inspired by Nick’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
