Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The ongoing Cold War between Google and China has now led to the postponement of the launch of two handsets in China running on Google’s Android mobile operating system. (Google accused Chinese hackers of compromising its internal networks to try to access the Gmail accounts of human rights activists.) The phones, made by Samsung and Motorola, were to launch yesterday by mobile operator China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. The move is probably the best evidence yet that Google is serious about pulling out of China altogether, say observers. Google says it is continuing to hold talks with Chinese authorities, but evidence continues to mount that the break-ins were indeed of Chinese origin.
Time Inc. has acquired shopping recommendation service StyleFeeder for an undisclosed amount. StyleFeeder earns a revenue share from online retailers it connects user with. The publisher plans to integrate the service, which has some 1 million registered members, with fashion-themed InStyle.com.
Microsoft hopes to add live and on demand ESPN programming to the Xbox Live platform similar to the events featured on broadband channel ESPN 360, per the NYTimes. There have been close to 40 million Xbox 360 consoles shipped worldwide with about 20 million registered Xbox Live members, but consumption on the platform is still not measured by a third party.
While media pundits wonder aloud whether or not Conan should take his show to the internet, lean-budgeted web show producer Revision3 has tendered the late night host a formal offer. (They’re serious.) Meanwhile Funny or Die has thought up a way for Leno and Conan to Settle the Score.
Social music television network Akoo, maker of digital video displays for mall food courts, announced that it has been awarded a patent covering its method of using mobile devices to select on-demand content and socially interact with programming across networked digital video and IPTV services, via SMS text messaging or mobile applications. Akoo, which claims an audience of 64.5 million monthly viewers according to Arbitron, delivers ad-supported major label music videos to 53 measured markets. The interface enables viewers to select their favorite videos via text message or mobile apps and share them on the network.
Online video platform Episodic announced a partnership with live streaming specialist AEG Digital Media to offer HD streaming and on demand video solutions to publishers. The solution will include both live event production services and a full platform to manage, measure and monetize the live events.

Video ad technology provider YuMe introduced a new “triple play” video ad placement product that includes a pre-roll ad souped up with an interactive menu providing additional engagement options for viewers. The ad includes three different call to actions, including a request to view more videos, learn more about the product or sign up for promotional offers.
Interactive video ad company Jivox introduced new custom interactivity features that turn online video ads into interactive applications to drive engagement and direct response. Advertisers can now bake in custom Flash or HTML applets into their video ads enabling basic interactivity including virtual tours, clips or mapping. Jivox has also extended the interactivity available in Jivox’ in-banner video ads to in-stream video ads.
Cablevision and Comcast Spotlight have reached a new five-year agreement to continue their partnership involving the New York Interconnect.
ESPN has acquired Plano, TX-based technology development company Vistas Unlimited, Inc., a company that delivers virtual insertions during live television broadcasts. Vistas Unlimited applications include superimposed optimal putt paths for The Golf Channel.
Under pressure form EU privacy mavens, Microsoft pledged to reduce the amount of time it holds Bing users search data from 18 months to 6 months, regardless of how long competitors hold it.
KIT digital announced it is developing and adapting a next generation “VX-one” IP video management platform to include the optimized delivery of IP video to tablet computers. The move comes as KIT digital has seen the types of devices which its clients’ end-users are watching video on increase 95%, from 190 in 2008 to 370 in 2010.
The Global Media Exchange, operator of the GMX content licensing exchange, announced a three-year cooperation agreement with NATPE, where both parties will work together to grow their businesses and co-promote one another online. Future NAPTE attendees (the deal won’t be in effect until later this year) will be eligible for GMX priority access and other incentives.
Worldwide shipments of web-enabled stationary and over-the-top devices will grow more than seven-fold from their 2009 levels to over 230 million by 2013, according to new In-Stat report. Last year 1 in 5 households used such devices to view Netflix, Amazon, iTunes and Blockbuster titles. That ratio will increase to 1 in 2 by 2013, especially as cable operators begin to offer OTT services via interactive set-tops.
One of the biggest (and more expensive) iPhone games has hit Apple’s App Store: Rockstar Games‘ Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for $9.99, complete with warnings of frequent/intense/mature/suggestive themes. It looks very sophisticated and will no doubt sell like hotcakes to GTA devotees.
As further evidence that Android is coming into its own as an entertainment content platform, Discovery Channel has launched a programming app for Android, built by Rhythm NewMedia. The free offering includes video clips, quizzes, photo galleries and programming schedules, as well as access to products from DiscoveryStore.com.
Condé Nast, publishers of Teen Vogue, has launched a new iPhone app designed by FOUR32c called Haute Spot, to provide readers with a closer look at clothes and accessories featured in the magazine. The app, which is free through Jan. 22, features various e-commerce and social networking components including shopping and photo “lookbook” sharing via Facebook.
USA Network launched a new interactive game based on its new hit series White Collar. Join the crime-solving team through seven levels of cat and mouse situations, clue deciphering and tests of detective skills. Sponsor Ford is giving away the same Taurus Limited featured in the show to one lucky gamer.

Online video players haven’t completely given up on trying to monetize independently produced fare but like niche cable networks, they’ve realized they have value to entertainment brands by delivering samples and marketing messages to a specific audience. Independent online video entertainment site Metacafe is adding more partners to its guy targeted, 5-category professional content offerings covering TV, Movies, Music, Sports and Video Games. New snackable offerings include NHL and Universal Sports highlights; selections from Sony Music MyPlay video network and the Warner Music Group archives; and TV content from CBS and Hulu. Metacafe, which is approaching a monthly audience of 15 million uniques in the U.S., has seen its revenue nearly double year-to-year on a quarterly basis thanks largely to studios, networks and game publishers utilizing the site to drive viewership and sales, according to CEO Erick Hachenburg. What he calls endemic advertising now accounts for close to 2/3 of the site’s revenues, he says.
