Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang has resigned from his seat on the company’s Board of Directors and all other positions with the company. In addition, Yang has resigned from the Boards of Yahoo Japan Corporation and Alibaba Group Holding Limited. In his letter to Yahoo! chairman Roy Bostock, Yang said, “The time has come for me to pursue other interests outside of Yahoo!” Yang co-founded Yahoo! Inc. in 1995 with David Filo and has served on the company’s Board since March of 1995. He was also Yahoo!’s CEO from June 2007 to January 2009. Both Bostock and new Yahoo! CEO, Scott Thompson, thanked Yang for his contributions and influence in shaping the company from inception to where it stands today, while also taking care to mention “the enormous potential of Yahoo! in the days ahead.”
Young Hollywood Network officially launched yesterday as part of YouTube’s original programming initiative. The channel’s programming lineup includes five original shows every week, with a new episode airing every morning at 1 pm ET, in additional to select special programming on the weekends. Airing on Mondays will be Studio Secrets, a celebrity interview show which premiered with Ewan McGregor as the guest; on Tuesdays, Quiet on the Set, a series that takes viewers behind-the-scenes, premiering with a backstage spotlight on ABC’s The Middle; on Wednesdays, The Power Players, focusing on influential people in Hollywood, starting with Morgan Freeman; on Thursdays, Guest List Only, which gives viewers access to popular locations around Hollywood; and on Fridays, Celebrity Trend Report, which discuses latest trends with celebrities like Taio Cruz and Victoria Justice.
Red Bull Media House will be launching four new original series, including Livin’ Louie Vito, Bobby’s Life, Chasing Summer and Who is J.O.B. 2.0 on the Red Bull Channel on YouTube. The company says that these shows will be followed by nine additional web programs in the coming months. Each series chronicles the daily lives of prominent action sports athletes, including urban mountain biker Danny MacAskill, snowboarder Louie Vito, action sports star Travis Pastrana, surfer Jamie O’Brien and pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler.
Actress Zooey Deschanel is signing on to be creative consultant for the second season of The Single Life, a web series from the Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG) and Real Mom Productions. The series will be launched on HelloGiggles.com, a website founded by Deschanel and her producer partners Sophia Rossi and Molly McAleer, who have also come on board as creative consultants for the show. The actress’ website will serve as the central hub for the second season. However, The Single Life will also be distributed through select websites within DBG’s video ad network of 2,600 sites that are targeted toward the 18-34 year-old age demographic.
SuperMoms, a web series from RedLever Studios in collaboration with Emmy-winning producer Jonathan Prince, starring Joey Lauren Adams, Hank Baskett and Julie Warner, has been launched on Facebook. The show focuses on four women who have to juggle the task of being mothers and crime-fighting superheroes. The eight-episode series features both live-action and animated content as it flips between the mothers and their animated alter-egos. New episodes will air every Tuesday, and will also be syndicated across the Joost Media Network.
In conjunction with its DVD release, Lionsgate is also offering Abduction, an action movie starring Taylor Lautner, for streaming on Facebook for $3.99. Once purchased, the streaming time-period for rentals on Facebook is 48 hours. TechCrunch notes that the payment system is set up via credit card/PayPal payments, bypassing Facebook Credits (Facebook takes 30% of the revenue if its Credits system is used).
After announcing that it drove roughly 20% of Black Friday online sales last year, Monetate is introducing Agility Suite, an enterprise-class suite of products that seeks to enhance retail marketers’ digital “agility,” foster greater customer engagement and increase website ROI. With the Agility Suite, retail marketers can test an unlimited number of campaigns outside of the IT queue, connect with key segments of website traffic in real-time, deliver a consistent message across different marketing channels throughout the purchasing cycle, enhance the merchandising and display of products and make any alterations within the web experience without being slowed down by internal IT constraints. The Agility Suite can be installed on a website with one line of code, and is available through a cloud-based platform that runs on the browser.
Joining Wikipedia, Reddit and others, Google will also publicly protest SOPA and its sister bill in the Senate, PIPA, on its homepage today, reports CNET. The link will inform users of Google’s arguments against the controversial anti-piracy bill. In a statement, Google said, “Like many businesses, entrepreneurs and web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the internet.” Wikipedia, on the other hand, is going to quite possibly the greatest length to protest the bill; the entire English language version of the website will go dark for a 24-hour period, until midnight, tonight. Reddit will shut down for 12 hours.
Premier Retail Networks (PRN), a digital place-based media services company, and indoorDIRECT, owner of the Restaurant Entertainment Network (REN), have announced a joint venture in an effort to offer marketers and advertisers the ability to reach a wider audience outside the home. As per the agreement, PRN will assume a 50% equity position in exchange for an undisclosed financial investment. The other 50% will be owned by several investors. A portion of the investment will be directed toward expanding the network nationally, increasing the number of dining locations served to 2,500 by mid-2012. PRN will also take over management of all ad sales, programming and network operations, while indoorDIRECT will provide its brand name, existing venue agreements, tech infrastructure and other assets. indoorDIRECT programming is currently featured in many fast-food restaurants, including participating Taco Bell, Wendy’s and Denny’s establishments.
182 million U.S. internet users watched online video content in December 2011, averaging 23.2 hours per viewer, according to the latest numbers from comScore’s Video Metrix service. The total U.S. internet audience watched 43.5 billion videos. Yahoo! sites came in third with 53.3 million viewers, followed by Viacom Digital (45.8 million) and Facebook (42 million). In terms of total time viewers spent over December watching content on said website, Google was still the top dog with an average of 7.9 hours per viewer. A new study from Zmags, a provider of a platform that creates digital products for retailers, finds that 87% of shoppers prefer the mobile or desktop web when shopping online, according to a report from Mobile Commerce Daily. Comparatively, only 4% of the respondents indicated that they would prefer shopping via a retailer’s app. The report also honed in on the shopping trends of tablet users. It found that 14% of tablet shoppers used their device for spontaneous shopping. Also, 29% of tablet shoppers used the device because it was convenient, and 24% of consumers employed the tablet to browse, according to the report. When looking toward the future, 49% of mobile shoppers answered that they plan to use their mobile devices more for shopping in 2012.
BIO.com from A+E Networks recorded its largest day of traffic across all metrics this past MLK Jr. Day. Searches for Martin Luther King, Jr. drove 1.1 million page views on the website and broke the records for number of visits and number of unique visitors. The previous record was established on October 6, 2011, in the wake of Steve Jobs’ passing.

Uncrate defines it as a “digital magazine for guys who love stuff.” As in, cool stuff. However, just so as to not ignore the other gender, I’m almost certain that anyone can find an interesting item or gadget on the site. The site features five new items, or stuff, every day for its readership to ogle at, regardless of how unnecessary they may be. For example, recent items include a motorcycle, water-proof field jacket, a watch that can measure time down to 1/2000th of a second, a $250 coffee machine and notebooks that look like sliced bread. Why? Because, why not? Uncrate also allows you to search for stuff by 12 different categories, including Gear, Style, Rides, Tech, Body, Vices, Movies, Games, Videos and more. It also has a great iOS app and daily email, if you find yourself enjoying browsing its selection of things you never knew you needed.
