Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 6, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Game On: As Cartoon Network prepares to unleash its third annual Hall of Game Awards Feb. 11, chief content officer Rob Sorcher gives CynKids the playbook on this year’s show and its importance to the network.
The event is “a tentpole event that runs through all of the network touch points,” Sorcher says. “These types of larger events help to create an energy around the Cartoon Network brand and serve to attract top tier talent.” Also key, “Hall of Game also adds diversity to an animation network, and it’s great to have an on-the-ground expression of the network.”
“Being the only kids sports awards show makes us unique in the landscape of award shows,” Sorcher says. It also brings in some strong sponsorships. Among this year’s advertisers are Hasbro’s NERF FireVision Sports, Wii U from Nintendo, Pepperidge Farm, Chef Boyardee and the movie “Escape from Planet Earth” from The Weinstein Co.
What can viewers expect this year? “We’ve got great buzz… and we’ll add to the fun this year by celebrating athleticism with an array of high-energy performances from the worlds of extreme sports, free-running, cheerleading, skateboarding, dunking and more,” Sorcher says. “Plus, Shaquille O’Neal and Nick Cannon will join together as co-hosts and will definitely turn this into an award-winning party!”

Amazon Studios is focusing on preschool, transitional preschool and 6-11 for its foray into kids entertainment. The production arm of the online retailing giant greenlit the development of an initial six children’s test pilots, including art adventure series Creative Galaxies, created by Angela Santomero of “Blue’s Clues” fame; a project based on the Wizard of Oz; “Teeny Tiny Dogs,” from Rugrats creator Howard Baker and the Jim Henson Co.; and an untitled science-based treatment from J.J. Johnson.
“We don’t want to develop shows against one another; they are all unique,” Amazon Studios director Roy Price said at Kidscreen Summit. Amazon Studios will pay $10,000 if it options a program and $55,000 if it creates the series. The studio will also bring in educational consultants to help assess and shape the content.
Once completed, the pilots will be posted on Amazon Instant Video, Prime Instant Video, Lovefilm UK and Lovefilm Germany for customers to view for free. Viewer feedback will help determine which series make it, as will educational consultants the studio is bringing in. “Amazon has a presence in lots of countries around the world so it is optimal to have global rights” to the content it produces, Price said.
Price said the biggest advantage to distributing over a digital platform is that anyone can access the content and determine its success vs. “complicated conversations” that can hamper the traditional studio environment. “Whenever a show is a game changer on TV it’s because it breaks some rules,” he said. “Having an open system allows the process to be a customer-driven backstop, so I would like to think it’s a little more open to out of the box ideas.”
More Kidscreen News: Google/YouTube global head of entertainment partnerships Alex Carloss called teens and tweens “the lifeblood of our platform,” at the Kidscreen Digital Dimension Spotlight panel. “There’s room for all sorts of content to work,” Carloss said. “But the constant thread across the different types of content is authenticity. If it has a connection with the audience, it will work.”… On producing content for audiences that provide instant feedback, Varsity Pictures/Awesomeness TV founder Brian Robbins said viewer feedback is “way more important than numbers and ratings. I read comments all day every day. Pay attention to them.” He added, “We can no longer blame the marketing department. We are the marketing department.” Awesomeness currently has 350,000 subscribers on YouTube and 70 million views… Barry Blumberg, EVP of Alloy Digital and president of Smosh, said the content development he’s most proud of occurs “when there is a greater connection between the creator and audience. In [traditional] television, that’s really hard to do.” … Don’t expect a Simpsons movie follow up in the next 3-4 years, if ever. Writer/producer Joel Cohen called the 2007 theatrical film a “herculean task” that took almost four years to make The Simpsons short, which was attached to Twentieth Century Fox film Ice Age: Continental Drift, is nominated for an Academy Award this year.
BBC Children’s and FremantleMedia Enterprises’ kids & family entertainment division entered a broad-ranging partnership to co-produce new shows over the next five years. Between them, the companies agreed to investing “tens of millions of dollars” to create programs for both CBBC and CBeebies, beginning with the second season of Tree Fu Tom. The partnership does not affect the first-look deal that BBC Children’s has with BBC Worldwide… Related news, BBC Worldwide Channels and CBeebies are developing a math-based kids series aimed at preschoolers. Numtum Adventures will premiere on CBeebies in the U.K. later this year.
Discovery Kids tapped Canada’s Portfolio Entertainment to create and distribute the new animated preschool series DOKI, based on the Discovery Kids Latin America character.
U.K.’s ITV Studios and New Zealand based Pukeko Pictures are collaborating with Weta Workshop to re-imagine classic series Thunderbirds are Go! as a new children’s series set to debut on ITV and U.K.’s CITV Channel in 2015.
Zodiak Kids notched a bunch of new deals for the sixth season of series Totally Spies!, produced by Zodiak’s Marathon Media. Teletoon Canada, DeA Kids Italy and MBC (Middle East) are now on board. Teletoon and DeA also picked up rights to the first five seasons.

Nintendo reduced fiscal-year sales targets for both the Wii U and 3DS. It now expects to sell 4 million Wii U consoles in this fiscal year ending in March, 27% less than the goal of 5.5 million it previously set. Nintendo also said it will sell 15 million 3DS handheld consoles in the fiscal year, down from most recent estimate of 17.5 million. In an effort to bolster sales, Nintendo has announced upgrades to both consoles in the spring.
Talk about reader engagement. National Geographic Kids magazine this week claimed the Guinness World Records title for the most people running 100 meters in 24 hours, and magazine staff laid out 16,407 shoes at National Geographic Society headquarters in D.C. in an attempt to set the title for the largest collection of shoes to recycle. Through its Run for the Planet program, the magazine invited kids and families around the world to participate in the program. A total of 30,914 people ran 100 meters in support of the running record. The attempt for the largest collection of shoes to be recycled consists of 16,407 shoes, including those of Taylor Swift, One Direction band members, Danica Patrick, Eli Manning and Amanda Beard. Through Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, the sneakers will be recycled into Nike Grind – a material used in athletic surfaces.
41 Entertainment entered a global promotion with Burger King Worldwide for the Pac-Man and Ghostly Adventures property worldwide. The television series is slated to begin broadcast in fall 2013. Beginning in January 2014 and running six-eight weeks, BK Kids Meals will come packaged with a Pac-Man themed toy.

By the Numbers
The downsizing in Walt Disney Co.’s Interactive Media unit is paying off. The company posted a Q4 profit of $1.38 billion, besting analyst projections but down 6% year-over-year. Media networks rose 7% to $5.1 billion, and operating income at its cable networks decreased $15 million, primarily due to a decrease at ESPN. Growth at Disney Channel, ABC Family and AEN helped offset some of the loss at the sports network. CEO Robert Iger had pledged to turn around the money-losing interactive division this year and the unit, which produces games and online content, posted Q4 income of $9 million, compared with a loss of $28 million a year earlier. That gain, along with higher profit from Disney theme parks and its ABC broadcast unit, partly offset lower earnings from the film and cable divisions. Last week the company shuttered its Austin, Texas-based “Junction Point” studio that produced the faltering “Epic Mickey” titles.
Viacom pres/CEO Philipe Dauman cited “lingering effects of the ratings softness” at Nickelodeon as a primary factor behind the company’s Q4 revenue dip to $3.3 billion from $3.95 billion in the year-ago quarter. Viacom posted a quarterly profit of $470 million, up from $212 million in Q4 2011. Excluding Nick, he said all other Viacom nets had positive ad revenue growth during the quarter but ad revenue ended down 6% year-over-year due entirely to shortcomings at Nick. He said the Nick will focus on three goals: Reclaiming Saturday mornings, bolstering its weekday afternoon blocks and strengthening preschool viewership.
Sprout scored bragging rights as the most-viewed kids network in total day composition for Women 18-49, according to Nielsen data. The network’s record Women 18-49 audience grew 61% vs. the same month last year, the largest gain in this demo among all kids networks. January also matched Sprout’s highest-rated month in network history, continuing its streak for the fifteenth consecutive month of double-digit percentage gain year-over-year in total day HH delivery. The network saw its highest rated day ever on Saturday, Jan. 5, with a HH coverage area rating of 0.34 in 178,000 homes.
