Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/03/10
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, February 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
2010 is already looking better for the media giants as News Corp. surprised investors yesterday reporting better-than-projected results in its film, television and newspaper businesses. James Cameron’s smash 3D hit Avatar had more than a little to with it and will likely be a gift that keeps on giving for the company, even though its initial DVD/Blu-Ray release will not be in 3D. Revenue totaled $8.7 billion during FYQ2 and operating income was $1.2 billion with results from News Corp.’s newspaper and television businesses both outperforming expectations. Cost cutting helped the newspaper side while retrans revenue boosted revenue at Fox Broadcasting.

ABC Entertainment-managed Oscar.com launched a full roster of info about this year’s nominees, including bios, clips and film synopses. Interactive features include:
- the return of the “Oscars Play Along” game that tests users’ Oscar prediction skills. On Oscar night, users play along during the show, predicting category winners
- Oscar Tweets will aggregate Hollywood insiders’ twitter feeds leading up to the event
- From Feb. 26 the daily online show “The Road to the Oscars” will feature news, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage
Following in the footsteps of national pubs like the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, regional newspapers such as The Intelligencer Journal-Lancaster New Era and The Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina are getting ready to begin installing pay walls on their websites using a new software system dubbed Press+, per the NYTimes. The outlets will begin by charging only readers within a limited geographical area and limit paid content to unique areas such obituaries and local sports.
Oxygen.com reported its best month ever in Jan. 2010 breaking the one million mark for unique visitors for the first time, up +68% y/y. The network’s new two-screen social viewing platform, OxygenLive generated 3.4 million page views in January alone. Oxygen says Bad Girls Club has also landed in the top ten trending topics on Twitter every week since this season’s premiere.

President Obama threw his support behind net neutrality legislation in his crowd-sourced interview on YouTube Monday. “We’ve got to keep the internet open – we don’t want to create a bunch of gateways that prevent somebody who doesn’t have a lot of money but has a good idea from being able to start their next YouTube or their next Google on the internet,” he said. Users submitted over 11,000 questions and cast over 667,000 votes after the President’s State of the Union address last week to YouTube’s CitizenTube portal.
Online show producer Revision3 says it increased aggregate engagement to 1.5 billion minutes in 2009 while growing its revenue by 30% y/y. The site added 10 new shows during the year and saw Patrick Norton & Veronica Belmont’s “Tekzilla” and Brian Brushwood’s “Scam School” join Diggnation in surpassing 1 million monthly views. Revision3 also has also been aggressive in adding “over-the-top” set top-based TV distribution partners, completing integrations with Tivo, Roku, Boxee, PopBox and Clearleap last year.
Bcc this is a new technology that enables a more personalized level of communication for Outlook, Twitter and (from next month) BlackBerry, giving users the ability to add a secure layer of context to their messages. The Bcc this Outlook plug-in allows users to safely send personalized private messages to selected recipients in the To, Cc, or Bcc fields along with their original email, while its Twitter client provides an interface to send direct messages to specific recipients along with the original tweet.
Female focused ad network Glam Media has raised approximately $50 million in series E funding, led by Aeris Capital with existing investors Burda Digital Holding and Mizuho Capital participating. The company has raised a total of $130 million, no doubt a record for an ad network. Glam says proceeds will be used to build a Digital Media Technology Center, expand internationally, launch new audience-based vertical channels and for additional strategic acquisitions. Glam currently claims a monthly U.S. audience of 72 million unique visitors and a global audience of 160 million uniques, per ComScore.
Crisp Wireless launched a new mobile ad-serving technology that looks to serve “always viewable” ads on mobile sites known for their limited real estate. Hearst Magazines Digital Media is one of the first publishers to sign on to offer Adhesion placements across multiple mobile properties including Cosmopolitan, CosmoGirl, Marie Claire and Esquire.
Apple has already started marking its territory in the e-book space, it would seem, calling app developer Lexycle (acquired by Amazon last year) to disable the USB e-book sharing feature on its free Stanza iPhone app, notes TechCruch. The feature allowed users to rapidly transfer ebook files written in the ePub or eReader formats from a computer to the iPhone via a USB cable.
Level 3 is getting ready to deliver the first uncompressed HD Feed for Super Bowl XLIV. An uncompressed 1.5 GB/second feed will be sent from Miami to CBS studio headquarters in New York via Level 3’s fiber-optic network.
Cablevision Systems‘ business-services broadband division Optimum Lightpath announced the availability of a 40-GB/second optical transport service designed to serve the financial industry. The service is available throughout Optimum Lightpath’s entire footprint and based on a flat-rate pricing model.
Broadcast industry group the Open Mobile Video Coalition is teaming with Harris Interactive and Rentrak Corp. to study mobile consumer application usage habits during OMVC’s Mobile DTV Consumer Showcase in Washington, D.C. Apps to be tested include live, local TV simulcasts, interactive Mobile DTV standard-compliant broadcasts, and emergency alerts.
The Associated Press and Univision are collaborating on a nationwide public option survey querying Hispanics on a range of topics including cultural identity and patterns of media usage. The survey will have a particular focus on how Hispanics view and experience the American education system and on the impact of the economic downturn on the Hispanic community.
Voice Over-IP (internet phone) penetration among U.S. businesses will nearly double from 42% in 2009 to 79% by the end of 2013, according to a new forecast from In-Stat. (The number reflects businesses having VoIP installed in at least one location.) Broadband IP Telephony revenues continue to grow and will more than double by 2013, compared to 2008. This growth will be fueled by single-user applications among increasingly distributed and mobile workforces.
If you’re a fan of those taking baby spots, you may want to download Oddcast and E*Trade Financial‘s new E*Trade BabyMail app, which allows you to create your own talking baby messages and share them with friends. Pick one of the E*Trade babies or upload your own baby photo. Voices can be added by typing into a text-to-speech application, recording by mic, recording by phone or choosing from a menu of pre-set messages The app will be promoted on TV during Super Bowl XLIV but its available now.
This one sounds fun for the kids. Sesame Workshop‘s $3.99 Elmo’s Monster Maker App for the iPhone/iPod Touch allows young users to create their own monster, email it to a friend and actually interact with their creation within a live video. Developer IDEO, creator of Grover’s Number Special App, also collaborated on this one.

Cincinnati-based marketing firm Empower MediaMarketing has hired Kevin Dugan as Social Marketing Director; Michael E. Rubin as Social Marketing Manager; and Taylor Wiegert as Social Marketing Associate.
Live web broadcasting service Ustream landed a whopping additional $75 million in series B funding led by Softbank, operator of the market leading Yahoo BB broadband service. The company says that the funding will help it continue its growth in the US as well as fund expansion into the Asia Pacific region including Japan, China, Korea and India. Softbank wunderkind founder Masayoshi Son knows a good thing when he sees it. One of the early leaders in the live streaming space, Ustream has pulled off some broadly-viewed events. More than 3.8 million watched the inauguration of President Barack Obama and more than 4 million tuned into the Twilight: New Moon red carpet premiere. Its social stream application launched last Oct. enables real-time interaction via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and AIM and it’s live streaming iPhone 3GS app has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times, according to the company. While much of the excitement generated from the platform comes from the immediacy of broadcasting live (check out the adorable Shiba Inu Puppy Cam feed,) Ustream’s producers are beginning to learn how to program, bake in interactivity and attract sponsorship for their online shows. It’s also a perfect platform for self-starting entertainers like Dane Cook, who can use it to pass the hat directly to their own audience. Dane is charging $5 to view his live stand-up show on Feb. 6, payable by credit card or PayPal.
