Cynopsis: Kids!

02/02/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DreamWorks Animation will bring brothers Sid & Marty Krofft‘s 1970’s TV series Lidsville to the big screen as a 3D feature film.  Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2), a director, animator, writer and voice actor (he was The Gingerbread Man in the Shrek movies) brought the project to DreamWorks Animation.  Sid & Marty Krofft will serve as executive producers on the movie.  Vernon, DreamWorks Animation’s head of development Alex Schwartz and development executive Chris Kuser are overseeing the project at the studio.  Lidsville (17×30) starred Charles Nelson Reilly, Butch Patrick and Krofft favorite Billie Hayes, and ran Saturday mornings on ABC from 1971-73.  LA public TV station KCET Kids & Family Channel recently unveiled plans to feature the Lidsville TV series as part of the new The Sid & Marty Krofft Hour together with their series H.R. Pufnstuf during its weekend programming block on Saturdays and Sundays 9:30-10:30a.  Several other Krofft brother series have been in movie development including H.R. Pufnstuf at Sony, and Sigmund the Sea Monster with Universal, which released Land of the Lost, based on a Krofft series of the same name, in 2009.

Relativity Media will market and release Smokewood Entertainment‘s kid/family-targeted feature film Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer in the US.  Based on the hugely popular Judy Moody book series by author Megan McDonald, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds and published by Candlewick Press, the movie stars Australia’s Jordana Beatty (Superman Returns) as Judy Moody and Heather Graham (The Hangover) as her aunt.  Directed by John Schultz (Like Mike, Aliens in the Attic), from a script by Kathy Waugh (Peep and the Big Wide World) and McDonald, the movie is slated for a summer 2011 wide release.  The movie is being produced by Smokewood’s Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, who produced Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.  Bobbie Sue Luther and Andrew Sugerman are executive producing.  CAA brokered the deal with Relativity on behalf of Smokewood.  Additionally, McDonald has written a novel inspired by the film’s script, which will be published May 24, 2011.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Foothill Entertainment and Odyssey Pictures further their strategic relationship as Foothill options the rights to the animated series Raz & Benny from Simon Hodgkiss of SphDigital, UK.  Odyssey Pictures Corp. will finance creative development and marketing of the property.  Targeted to K6-9, the series is a buddy comedy that revolves around the misadventures of two mice, Raz & Benny, who are big on ambition but short on brains  but who happen to have lots of good luck.  Foothill and Odyssey’s inked a co-development, financing and sales deal in fall 2010, which included the initial joint projects Gunk Aliens and My Momtourage and Me.  Additionally, under their deal, Foothill will represent three of Odyssey’s titles for international distribution, Kings of France, Vauban, and On the Farm.

Summit Entertainment acquires the feature film rights to Kenneth Oppel’s (The Silverwing Saga, Airborn series, among many others) forthcoming young adult novel The Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, the first title in a series of books, per VarietySimon & Schuster Children’s Publishing is set to release the Frankenstein origin story on August 23, 2011.  Producing the movie is Karen Rosenfelt, who produced Summit Entertainment’s Twilight Saga movies, among other movies.
