Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Cbeebies heads to the Nordic region this summer. The BBC’s preschool channel will get a localized channel in Norway, Denmark and Sweden as part of a new deal between BBC Worldwide and Canal+. CBeebies will launch as a non-commercial, three-hour block that will run twice daily (6:30a-9:30a, 3:30p-6:30p) on Canal+ new kid’s channel, which is set to debut June 2011. A number of CBeebies shows will also be available as a VOD catch-up service. The block will be dubbed into Danish, Norwegian and Swedish in addition to being available in the original English. The Cbeebies block will feature preschool series including Nina And The Neurons, The Roly Mo Show, and Penelope K, By the Way.
Fox Animation Studios acquires the feature film rights to the 1936 classic kid’s book The Story of Ferdinand, written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson, per Vulture (and heavily mentioned in the film The Blind Side). The CGI animated movie adaptation of the book will be developed and directed by Carlos Saldanha (Rio, the Ice Age movies). The book revolves around Ferdinand, a pacifist bull that prefers to hang in the pasture rather than go up against matadors. Disney produced and released an animated short based on Ferdinand in 1938, for which the studio won an Oscar.
Starz Entertainment in the US acquires both seasons of the live-action series Connor Undercover (39×30) in a deal with Shaftesbury Sales Company, the distribution arm of Shaftesbury. This follows Starz’s recent purchase of Shaftesbury’s kid/family targeted TV movie Vacation with Derek and tween aimed series Baxter. Connor Undercover and Baxter are set to premiere on Starz Kids & Family channel on March 1, 2011, which will be followed by the debut of Vacation with Derek on March 6. Connor Undercover is co-produced by Shaftesbury and Heroic Film Company.
Vme launches Mundo Peque (Little World), a new 60-second interstitial series, as part of its daily preschool block, Vme Ninos, as well as on its cable channel Vme Kids. Featuring young kids and hosts of Vme series, such as TuBebe, Planeta Feroz, Vme Cocina, among others, Mundo Peque is designed to provide preschoolers and caregivers activities and ideas to do at home that help kids learn about and interact with the world around them. Each host stars in ten 60-second spots. Future episodes will include dual language learning and a range of ways to stay healthy.
Nelvana Enterprises inks a deal with broadcaster TF1 (France) for the new CGI animated preschool series Mike the Knight (52×11), which is currently in production with Nelvana Studio and HIT Entertainment. Created by Mike the Knight was created by Alexander Bar (Lunar Jim) and penned by Marc Seal (head writer/Bob the Builder), Mike the Knight will deliver in fall 2011. The series will air in Canada on Treehouse. Nelvana Enterprises holds the broadcast and home entertainment rights to Mike the Knight Latin America and France, and the broadcast rights in the US. HIT Entertainment has the rights in all other territories. Mike the Knight is set in medieval land of Glendragon and follows the adventures of Mike, son of the King and Queen, who wants to grow up and be a knight like his dad. Mike, joined on his adventures by his friends a dragon and his horse, learns about responsibility and how to do things.
DQ Entertainment (DQE) signs an exclusive broadcast and distribution deal in Italy for The Jungle Book 3D TV series with RAI Due (RAI 2). The pact completed via DQE’s co-production partner ZDF Enterprises, Germany. Under the deal RAI 2 holds all broadcast rights to the series in Italy, where it will debut as part of the channel’s morning programming lineup from March 23.
Cartoon Network taped its first Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards ( www.hallofgame.com ) over the weekend. Hosted by skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, the awards show will air on Cartoon Network this Friday, February 25 at 7p, featuring a range of popular athletes and celebrities. Created and produced by Cartoon Network in association with IMG Media, the special was executive produced by Michael Dempsey and Steve Mayer. Fans were invited to go online and vote for their favorites in a range of categories, and some 37 million did just that. Some of the categories and winners include:

Topps and Abrams, publisher of illustrated books, enter into a multi-year exclusive license deal under which Abrams will publish books and products based on Topps’ sports and pop culture properties. The agreement features both non-fiction and fiction sports and entertainment-themed books, including titles for new formats and technologies, such as ebooks, and calendars, published by Abrams imprints, including Abrams ComicArts, Abrams Image, Abrams Books for Young Readers, Amulet Books, and Stewart, Tabori & Chang. The first line of books is slated to release in spring of 2012. The plan also includes a fiction series targeted to Boys 7-10, which could be adapted for TV, movies and other media platforms. Topps and Abrams previously partners in 2008 on books and a calendar based on Topps’ Wacky Packages
BillMyParents, Socialwise’s teen payment brand, expands its existing relationship with pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek to serve as a spokesperson and ‘brand ambassador.’ Under the multi-year deal, Dyrdek will be featured in BillMyParents commercials, on its website and in viral video campaigns, as well as via social media efforts. BillMyParents will be a partner and will get brand exposure in Dyrdek’s projects and entertainment vehicles.
