Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 1, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

National Geographic Kids jumps into world of preschool-targeted apps. Canadian interactive studio zinc Roe is teaming up with National Geographic Kids to produce a series of preschool-targeted apps. The new educational and entertainment Look & Learn: Animals apps will carry the National Geographic Little Kids banner and aim to encourage young kid’s awareness of the natural world through visuals and game play. The first National Geographic Little Kids app will launch at the iTunes App Store in early 2012. National Geographic Kids’ successful apps for older include Weird but True, the National Geographic Kids magazine app and Ultimate Dinopedia: The Most Complete Dinosaur Reference Ever.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The feature film adaptation of Cartoon Network‘s Ben 10 series will be penned by writer Albert Torres, who did a rewrite on Akira, per Variety. Based on the Ben 10 franchise created by the great Man of Action, the movie is being produced by Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Steve Richards via Silver Pictures.

DreamWorks Animation casts Kate Hudson, Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live), and Josh Gad (The Book of Mormon) to star in the voiceover cast for its new movie Me & My Shadow, per THR. Alessandro Carloni makes his directorial debut with Me & My Shadow.  Carloni previously was “head of story” on the studio’s How to Train Your Dragon. The movie, which features a mix of CG and traditional animation, revolves around a shadow named Stan (Hader) who is looking for a more exciting life than the one provided to him by his human Stanley Grubb (Gad). Stan takes over for the two of them following a shady event in the shadow world and they set off on an adventure. Hudson will lend her voice to Stanley’s possible girlfriend. Me & My Shadow is slated for release on November 13, 2013.

LICENSING

Atlantic recording artist Cody Simpson, the Australian teen’s most recent release is Coast To Coast featuring the popular song On My Mind, has inked an range of licensing deals for an array of products and merchandising. Some if Simpson’s new partners and products, some of which are currently available at retail, include: Accessory Innovations (bags, socks, and wallets); Accutime Watch Corporation (watches and other timepieces); Added Extras (cosmetics); Advanced Graphics (cardboard stand-ups); C&D Visionary (novelty items); Central Mills dba Freeze (t-shirts); Concept One Accessories (headwear, cold weather accessories, flip flops, slippers); FAB Starpoint (stationery and novelty gifts); Fathead (wall graphics); H.E.R. Accessories (costume jewelry); Kalan LP (novelty items); Lady Sandra Home Fashions (home textiles and room decor); Power Play Group (lenticular items); Roxo (collectible charms and rubber bracelets); Trends International (posters and calendars); The Wish Factory (toys, including Cody dolls).

Topps will release its Mars Attacks heritage card set this July 2012, in celebration of the science fiction trading card series’ 50th anniversary. The commemorative trading card set, will feature reprints of the original 55 cards in the Mars Attacks series, as well as 25 previously unseen subjects. Ten of those 25 cards, are painted by Jason Edmiston, are based on storyboarded sketches from original series pencillers Wally Wood and Bob Powell and pay homage to the pulp sci-fi style of Norm Saunders, the master painter who first gave Mars Attacks its unique look. Noted comic book artist John McCrea, who also is the illustrator of IDW’s forthcoming Mars Attacks comic book series, is creating 15 all-new cards. Additionally, the new card set will also feature collectible inserts such as limited edition multi-colored parallels and 3D lenticulars will be randomly included in packs.

Sony Consumer Products completes two new licensing deals for the Smurfs with Newco and Exhart.  Under its new deal, Newco will produce kid’s upholstered furniture (beanbags, foam fold out sofas and chairs) for release in fall/back-to-school 2012. Exhart will create outdoor products (garden stakes, chimes, blow molded night lights, plug in night lights, nylon wind spinners, garden accessories, and garden tools), which will be available in spring 2013.

MARKETING

Simon malls are set to salute Dr. Seuss. Simon Kidgits Club (www.simon.com/kidgits/), part of Simon Property Group’s Simon Brand Ventures, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, and Random House Children’s Books have partnered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Theodor Seuss Geisel’s first-ever published kid’s book, And To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, with upwards of nearly 100 Simon malls across the country are hosting a special Dr. Seuss-centric event beginning this Saturday, February 4, 2012. The mall events will feature a Dr. Seuss themed area where families can take part in activities such as: a book reading narrated by local personalities; photo op in front of a Mulberry Street-themed backdrop and Dr. Seuss characters; meet and greet with The Cat In The Hat; view an episode of PBS Kids’ The Cat In The Hat Knows a Lot About That!; create your own bookmark as well as And To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street booklets.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) guest stars in a new episode of the animated series Kick Buttowski suburban Daredevil that will debut on Saturday, February 4 at 11a on Disney XD.  In the episode, Jock Wilder’s Nature Camp, Parsons lends his voice to Larry, the overly cautious brother of the camp director, who is teamed with Kick on a wilderness adventure.

Cake inks a TV deal for Coolabi‘s animated preschool series Poppy Cat with France Televisions (France). Poppy Cat is set to premiere on France Televisions’ France 5 beginning July 2012. This new sale for Poppy Cat, which made its worldwide debut on commissioning channel Nick Jr. UK in May 2011, follows a number of broadcast deals around the world, including: Disney Junior in Spain and Latin America; Al Jazeera Children’s Channel; e-vision (U.A.E), SVT (Sweden); S4C (Wales); EBS Korea; OKTO Singapore; Nickelodeon Australia; TVO (Canada); Knowledge Network (Canada); NRK (Norway); RTE (Ireland); and most recently CITV (UK). The series airs on Sprout in the US.

Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution celebrate Valentine’s Day with DVD titles including SpongeBob SquarePants: To Love A Patty, and two titles featuring Nick’s Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego, Go!, The Wonder Pets!, Blue’s Clues, Yo Gabba Gabba!, and Ni Hao, Kai lan, Nickelodeon Favorites: We Love Our Friends and Nickelodeon Favorites: Celebrate Family!. All three titles include their own unique bonus content and are available at retail now.

Discovery Communications establishes a new Digital Strategy & Emerging Businesses team to be led by Gabe Vehovsky as EVP. The new team is designed group that will incubate, develop and identify new digital businesses for Discovery across platforms. The Digital Strategy & Emerging Businesses team is specifically structured to cultivate an entrepreneurially minded approach to identifying and nurturing business opportunities worth investing in. Vehovsky, who was previously EVP/Digital Media Strategy & Client Solutions, will report to Kelley Day, EVP and GM/Digital Media & Commerce, Discovery Communications.
