Microsoft took preventive action toward pending “Do Not Track” legislation, announcing plans to enable users of a new version of Internet Explorer 9 to opt into tracking protection software to deploy tracking blocking tools as you surf and subscribe to “tracking protection lists” which will take their web addresses out of the mix for ad targeting purposes. The FTC, which called for the development of a national system which would enable people to block all online tracking, applauded the move and called for other software providers to follow suit. Advocacy groups such as Consumer Watchdog also welcomed the tool, but said legislation is still necessary to insure online privacy.

The IAB continues to make its case against a legislated “Do Not Track” policy. Mike Zaneis, IAB’s Senior Vice President & General Counsel, claimed the industry is moving forward with its own privacy icon and other controls and that the online ad sector would experience “significant economic harm” from a government-controlled opt-out mechanism. Further, Steve Sullivan, IAB’s VP of Digital Supply Chain, responded via op-eds in USA Today and The Hill by breaking down key differences between Do-Not-Track and the Do-Not-Call registry.

First a bookstore, now an app store for developers. Google has launched an updated version of its Chrome Web Store, designed to serve as an applications storefront for its Chrome browser and Chrome OS, which will power an upcoming line of Chrome and netbooks (see above). The New York Times, Electronic Arts, NPR, PBS, Sports Illustrated and Amazon (which has both a storefront app and a Kindle app) are just some of the publishers that have developed apps for the store in the U.S. Chrome has not had much success in gaining market share in the ultra competitive browser market to date (holding at under 7% through Nov. according to Stat Owl,) but building out the browser for connected devices could give it a tremendous boost. The company hosted an event in San Francisco to show off updates to the operating system, including the ability to utilize Chrome web apps offline.
