Cynopsis: Kids!
12/22/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network will premiere its new animated series Young Justice on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 7p.  Last month the network debuted a Young Justice hour-long special that introduced the series team of super heroes, which is comprised of Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis.  Young Justice is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on characters from DC Comics.  Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) serve as producers on the series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBeebies, BBC’s preschool brand, will premiere its new Let’s Celebrate series in the US Hispanic market on Christmas Day, Saturday, December 25, at 4p.  All this week leading up to the debut of Let’s Celebrate, CBeebies will feature its Christmas Special block, daily 11a-1p, featuring holiday-themed episodes of its many preschool series.  Then, on Christmas Day, Cbeebies will feature a Christmas marathon, 11a-4p, culminating with the launch of Let’s Celebrate.  Each episode of Let’s Celebrate explores different stories and customs behind religious and cultural festivals as it visits kids and their families in different communities.  Festivals featured in the series include, Vaisakhi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Holi, Wesak, Purim, Diwali, Easter, St Patrick’s Day, St David’s Day, St George’s Day, St Andrew’s Day and Norouz.

The third season of The Electric Company ( www.pbskidsgo.org/electriccompany ) will launch on Monday, February 7, 2011 on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings).  The new season of The Electric Company is comprised of 12 new episodes, which will debut each Monday.  Building on the series goal of developing literacy skills, the theme for the new season of The Electric Company is math vocabulary.  Additionally, season three will introduce new segments and two new characters Coy Stewart (Are We There Yet?) will play Marcus Barnes, who inherits a math superpower, and Carly Sonenclar (Les Miserables) will play Gilda Flip, a prankster in training.  Also, special guest appearances this season include Alan Cumming, Benji and Joel Madden (Good Charlotte), music producer/rapper Swizz Beats, comedians Jenny Slate and Sherrod Small, and Wyatt Cenac (The Daily Show), as well as music’s Doug E. Fresh.

HBO will debut the new HBO presentation The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway in 2011.  HBO will record the special presentation of the current Broadway show at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in NYC, following its run that ends January 2, 2011.  While not specifically targeted to kids, The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway, like the Paul Reubens’ Pee-wee’s Playhouse TV series, works on many levels for different age groups.  Reubens’ first Pee-Wee Herman special debuted three decades ago.  The new special, like the first, will be directed by Marty Callner, who has directed a range of HBO comedy specials.  Reubens is also working with writer/director/producer Judd Apatow to develop a new Pee-Wee feature film.

MTV Networks International inks deals in Latin America for Nickelodeon‘s series True Jackson, VP.  Channels acquiring the live-action comedy include UCV TV (Chile) takes season one of the series, with Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay) picking up the first 25 episodes. TeleTica (Costa Rica) signs on for additional episodes of True Jackson, VP (episodes 114-125 from season 1 and episodes 201-210 from season 2).  Viewers of Venevision (Venezuela) and Teleamazonas (Ecuador) will be able to watch the series on the new Nickelodeon blocks that will be featured on those channels under newly complete deals.

DHX Media is launching a new iPad app based on its CBeebies TV series Grandpa in My Pocket.  The new Grandpa in my Pocket: Horatio Heave Ho! eBook app will be available initially in the UK via UK iTunes, and will rollout later in other territories.  The app will be available for iPhone and iPod Touch in spring 2011.  Narrated by Jason Mason, the ebook features Horatio Heave Ho!, the Sunnysands Bank Manager that really wants to be a pirate.  When he decides to search for treasure at the beach, Grandpa dons his shrinking cap to help teach him there’s more to life than treasure.  The app includes features such as tapping the little Grandpa on each page to make him run  and then try to catch him and make him sparkle, tap Horatio and play pirate, and take part in the word and actions of the pirate song.  The Grandpa in My Pocket TV series can be seen around the world and is produced with participation from Finance Wales and produced by Adastra Creative.

Spain’s Zinkia Entertainment is releasing its second Pocoyo app, Coloring with Pocoyo and Friends, worldwide specifically for the iPad  but also available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  The app can be purchased and downloaded in English and Spanish.  New coloring pages will be available on demand via the app.  Downloading the app provides the user with seven days premium access to the Premium Club at pocoyoworld.com ( www.pocoyoworld.com ), Pocoyo’s virtual world online destination.  The app is based on the Pocoyo CGI animated preschool TV series, which is co-produced by Zinkia and ITV Studios Global Entertainment.  Bandai America, the master toy licensee for the property in the US and Canada, recently released a line of Pocoyo toys.  The series airs in the US on the Nick Jr. channel, PBS, Univision and Discovery Familia.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:   This pair first appeared in a book published in 1918, later dolls were made and a television show first aired in 1988. The girl was first inspired by the author’s daughter who found an old faceless and well loved rag doll that belonged to her grandmother.  Who were this pair?   RAGGEDY ANN AND ANDY  Kudos to:  Danielle Larson-Hasbro Inc./Pawtucket; Monica Lenti-MTV Networks/NY; Ellen Wall-Disney FamilyFun/Northampton; Mara Anastas-Simon & Schuster/NY; Leah Broeders-Target/Minneapolis; Heather Floore-KDAF/Dallas; Michael Ross-The Hub/Burbank; Katherine Kaufman-Televix Entertainment/Beverly Hills; Randy Barrios-CBS/LA; Chip Beaman-Soundelux Design Music Group/Hollywood; Daniel Wineman-Disney/London; David Hiltz-HBC/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question:   Entirely too rugged to be considered a doll, this 12″ toy featured a scar on its right cheek and came well equipped to fight any enemy.  Who is he?     (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
