Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, August 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Hacking pays. A 17-year old hacker who figured out how to unlock the iPhone so it can be used with other networks apart from AT&T has been rewarded with a new Nissan 350Z sports car and three 8 GB iPhones. Young George Holtz made the deal with the mobile phone repair company CertiCell in exchange for a consultancy gig. Meanwhile a video demonstrating the procedure has been posted by John McLaughlin – founder of Belfast, Ireland based Uniquephones – on a blog dubbed iphoneunlocking.com.
 
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

CBSNews.com and washingtonpost.com struck a deal to share coverage of the 2008 Presidential campaigns. washingtonpost.com will feature video news coverage from CBS News reporters while CBSNews.com gets to post print-based news, analysis and commentary from the Post’s revered political news bureau. Personnel from both sites will also jointly participate in live chats and other online activities.
 
Sundance Channel signed a deal with Virgin America to produce a custom inflight TV channel on the airline’s “Red” inflight entertainment system, which now offers 18 satellite TV channels, 25 PPV movies and a selection of video games and music files. Sundance originals including Nimrod Nation, Iconoclasts and Big Ideas for a Small Planet will be featured.
 
GSN will host its first-ever online chat following the telecast of the Grand Slam Semi-Finals on September 1 from 8-9 pm ET/5-6 pm PT. Contestants Ken Jennings, Michelle Kitt, David Legler and Ogi Ogas will participate. Go to GSN.com/grandslam to log on.
 
MySpace launched a fashion community page yesterday in time for New York’s Fashion Week. The MySpace film channel is also relaunching this month with exclusive footage from Rob Zombie’s upcoming Halloween movie opening in theaters August 31, as well as a personal video message from the heavy metal rocker/filmmaker.
 
Sweden-based virtual doll site Stardoll announced its 10 millionth registered user, according to ComScore figures, making it the top site for girls aged 9-17 among ComScore’s top 1000 sites. To celebrate, the site is giving each user a virtual “swag bag” as well as 1,000 “stardollars.”
 
Zomba Label recording artists Chris Brown will be Artist of the Month for multiplatform music service Music Choice this September.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Community-based news aggregator Digg rolled out a major redesign featuring new page and story layouts and simplified navigation. For the first time user submitted videos will be showcased on the home page.
 
Peer-to-peer video sharing site TorrentSpy is shutting down its service to users in the U.S. The company is involved in a legal battle with the MPAA over copyright infringement and is awaiting a ruling over whether or not it must turn over user data to the film association.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Ascent Media Group announced an alliance with HP to co-develop, market and deliver a new suite of services and technologies to enable studios to archive, repurpose and distribute media digitally. Major studios including Paramount and Sony have been working with two companies for the past 3 years to help digitize content for distribution on broadband, mobile and other outlets. To date, the AMG and HP offering has processed more than 90,000 assets.
 
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Boston PBS station WGBH with a $600,000 grant to research and develop closed captioning for mobile media services including iPods, cellphones and PDAs. The public broadcaster helped pioneer the technology for television in the 70s.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Google
signed a multi-year online ad agreement with CNN.com, replacing Yahoo as the site’s ad partner. Google’s AdSense will deliver targeted text-based ads to CNN.com, though no video ads are included in the deal.


 

Crispin Porter + Bogusky became the newest subscriber To TiVo‘s Stop||Watch DVR ratings service, joining Publicis-owned Starcom USA, Media IQ and the Interpublic Group. The second-by-second measurement program and commercial ratings system delivers both live and time-shifted data from a sample of 20,000 TiVo users.
 
Vertical online ad platform Adify announced a new Green channel aggregating more than 4 million unique visitors from thousands of environmentally-themed sites including Washington Post’s environmental blogroll, Green Ad Planet and the Sustainable Green Ad Network.
 
CBS Interactive‘s irreverent financial news blog WallStrip landed an in-show sponsorship with Dell Computers. Under the deal host Lindsay Campbell will now use a Dell XPS PC on the show.

A new report from IMS Research suggests smaller digital set top box manufacturers are gaining market share in worldwide markets, presenting a challenge to market leaders such as Thompson and Motorola. Rapid digitalization in China and India, creating demand for basic and mid-range digital set-tops, will only accelerate this trend.

The National Geographic Society appointed two new vice presidents as a part of a reorganization of its Communications division. Ellen Stanley, previously a Director of Communications, has been upped to VP/Communications, Ventures. Mimi Koumanelis, also a former Communications Director, has been promoted to VP/Communications, Mission Programs. Both will report to EVP Betty Hudson.
 
Televersemedia has named Sal Tofano to the position of VP/Sales and Marketing. Sal will focus on shaping, leading and managing the sales and marketing strategy for the Stamford, CT-based multiplatform video and film production company.
