Fox Broadcasting recently announced a change in its programming licensing structure that forces non-subscribers of Hulu Plus or password-protected TV Everywhere services to wait eight days before watching new episodes of the network’s shows online. To see how this would affect internet piracy rates, TorrentFreak tracked the downloads of two Fox shows, Gordon Ramsay’s Hells Kitchen and MasterChef, on BitTorrent to see if there was a noticeable change in the number of illegal downloads. The results: in the first five days, downloads for Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef increased by 114% and 189%, respectively. This is an admitted collateral damage the network is willing to accept for the chance to incentivize people to watch live TV or pay for a streaming service. There are rumors that ABC may make a similar move.


Google TV released a preview version of the Google TV plug-in for the Android SDK. It not only provides developers a platform to begin creating apps for TV, but also offers them an opportunity to begin tweaking their existing Android apps and get them ready for when the Google TV update ships.

Hollywood Suite, four new high-definition movie channels that offer over 450 commercial-free, unedited movies every month from Warner Bros. and MGM, will launch across Canada this November. The four channel package will be available for subscription on cable, satellite and IPTV with a select number of movies also offered on demand, online and on mobile.

During the show’s first season, Oxygen Network’s reality TV competition, The Glee Project, engaged viewers via OxygenLive, the network’s dual-screen viewing experience that allows viewers to watch and discuss a show as it’s being broadcast. The viewer engagement does not end there as the show also boasts a social media presence that includes 1.6 million fans/followers, 96.1 total check-ins to The Glee Project through the season finale as reported by GetGlue and nearly 16.7 million video views across, mobile, Hulu and YouTube.


Aniboom Virtual Studio has launched the Aniboom Animation Marketplace. It’s a new service that brings in the virtual animation studio’s 10,000-plus animation professionals to help your company complete projects that require animation of varying degrees of difficulty and size.

Amazon Web Services LLC unveiled Amazon ElastiCache, a new web service that seeks to improve the performance of web applications by allowing customers to access and retrieve information from an in-memory caching system in the cloud rather than having to deal with slower disk-based databases. It is compatible with Memcached, a memory object caching system that is widely used by developers today. The service is best suited for heavy workloads such as social networking, gaming and media sharing sites. As Jon Brendsel, Vice President of Product Development at PBS, notes, “Amazon ElastiCache takes care of ongoing administrative functions…allowing us to focus more on delivering great web experiences to our viewers.”

Moat, an ad tech startup looking to develop better ways to measure the effectiveness of online display ads, has received an additional $1.5 million in funding. The startup does not view the click as a reliable measure of ad effectiveness. Therefore, its developing products such as a display ad only search engine, available for industry professionals to search what kind of campaigns different brands are running, and a brand analytics product that utilizes mouse hovers and heat maps to measure attention.


Coca-Cola’s mobile banner ads can now be found within TV Guide’s iPhone app. The ads read “Stay Extraordinary” and direct consumers who click on it to the company’s Facebook page where they can log-in to “like” the company and immerse themselves in the company’s increasing social engagement efforts.

Originally created for online display ads, Digital Advertising Alliance’s Ad Choices icon is now also available for streaming video ads thanks to TidalTV, an online video advertising network. The icon allows consumers to learn more about behavioral targeting practices and even opt out of the data collection practice by clicking on the icon.

Today, adBrite, the largest independent ad exchange, will release their new Real-Time Pricing solution to help maximize ad revenue by generating the best floor prices for every page view. Their algorithm calculates the audience value of each ad impression by taking several factors into account including advertiser type, market segment, geo- and demographic info and time-of-day.


Red Giant has signed on as a sponsor for the inaugural Original iPhone Film Festival. As a sponsor, the company is offering all entrants of the festival a free copy of Magic Bullet Movie Looks HD, their color effects software.

The NFL Network and Mediacom have agreed to a deal that will make the 24/7 league network and NFL RedZone, its game day highlights service, available to all Mediacom customers who subscribe to their Digital Plus package. The cable operator will also launch standard and high-definition feeds for both channels wherever possible. Time Warner Cable and Cablevision remain the last major holdouts.


An ABI Research report predicts that the market for VOD equipment will increase from $493 million last year to $591 in 2016. The report cites advanced advertising options such as ad insertion into VOD content and pay-TV providers preparing to offer premium content, movies that are available to watch two months before they come out on cable channels and video services, as reasons for the growth.

In the first half of 2011, iTunes gained a share on its already sizable lead in the U.S. online movie market by going from 64.9% in the first half of 2010 to 65.8% in 2011. The biggest noisemaker, however, was Wal-Mart’s Vudu service which jumped past Amazon and the Sony PlayStation Store to capture a 5.3% share of the market, up from 1.0% in 2010.


ThinkOptics, Inc. in partnership with Broadcast Interactive Media and Remotic, introduced the iWavit TVAid App, a new universal remote control app that is integrated with a built-in TV program guide, and is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. While the app is free to download, the attachable hardware accessory is price-tagged at $99.

Halfbrick, the developers of the popular Fruit Ninja game, bring you Jetpack Joyride, a new mobile game that will be available on the iPhone and iPad on September 1st, 2011. Previously known as Machine Gun Jetpack, the game continues the adventures of character Barry Steakfries, a franchise property that has amassed over one million downloads worldwide between two previous installments.


Specific Media has appointed Al Dejewski to be their new Senior Vice President of Global Marketing. Mr. Dejewski will oversee the company’s consumer and business-facing brands, including all marketing for MySpace, which the digital media company recently acquired in June 2011.

Miramax has hired Beth Minehart as Senior VP, Global Digital. Reporting directly to Miramax CEO Mike Lang, she will oversee the studio’s digital relationship with Facebook and all of its other digital deals including licensing deals with Netflix and Hulu.
