Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08.21.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 21, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
After three straight months of setting new records and surging past 20 billion views in June, online video ad views dropped by a half million views in July, according to Comscore‘s just-released monthly online video rankings. YouTube was at the top of the heap in video ads, with 3.4 million. Unique viewers clocked in at 168 million, videos at 17.7 billion, and minutes per viewer settled at 1,354. American video watchers saw almost four million more non-ad videos in July than they had the previous month. YouTube increased its monthly views by two million. Hulu dominated the number of video ads served per viewer with 69.2, though that was down from the 73 per viewer it served in June. YouTube came in second, with less than 30 spots per viewer.
In Other Words: Numbers will probably drop again in August as Americans spend more time on vacation than online. But September is likely to see more growth as people get back to work and as more and more access to online video becomes available.
Advertising behemoth Interpublic Group of Cos has formed partnerships with such TV and radio companies as A+E Networks, Clear Channel, Tribune Co., and Cablevision Systems Corp. “to build and test an automated ad-buying system for television and radio ads,” according to the Wall Street Journal. The system could be in use in as soon as six months.
In Other Words: TV is feeling the heat from the online ad world, particularly online video, which keeps taking bigger and bigger bites out of its market share and has been using programmatic buying for some time. If it works, this also means that television ads could become more targeted to groups of consumers as data becomes more available and more precise.
Dachis Group recently unveiled a new tool for marketers trying to reach targeted consumers in real time as they discuss topics online not obviously related (but perhaps beneficial) to designated brands, called The Real Time Marketing Platform. “It’s easy for a cookie brand to go to the cookie aisle and sell their cookies,” Brian Kotlyar, director of marketing at Dachis, tells Cynopsis Digital. “What we do is find things that have absolutely nothing to do with the brand in question. For instance, maybe people who like cookies are having a conversation right now about Kendrick Lamar. [Our tool will show that] Oreo should go to that spot and do something to get people who like cookies to go buy some Oreos. It’s pretty transformational because it lets you go to places you never knew you should, and get excellent brand impact from it.”
Netflix and The Weinstein Company have made a deal for the streaming-video company to be the exclusive home of the company’s films in the United States, starting in 2016. Netflix already has a deal with TWC to show the company’s documentaries and foreign films.
Yahoo! has just released the official trailers of its fall comedy lineup, featuring eight original web shows with such folks at Jack Black, John Stamos, Ed Helms, Cheryl Hines, and Rachael Harris. All of the episodes of the shows will debut Sept. 9 along with the complete 38-season archives of Saturday Night Live on Yahoo! Screen. The new shows include Tiny Commando, Losing It with John Stamos, Ghost Ghirls, We Need Help, The Fuzz, SketchY!, The Flip Side, and Sports Friends.
The CW has launched a digital-only television network, CW Seed, with four shows. The initial series include the third season of Husbands, which tells the tale of a controversial tabloid guy and a recently out-of-the-closet pro baseball player, who accidentally got married in Las Vegas and decided to stay together for fear that a breakup would be bad for the marriage-equality movement. Also debuting on CW Seed is Backpackers, the story of a recently engaged couple that are backpacking across Europe separately; Gallery Mallory, an animated series that revolves around an over-educated and under-employed woman working in a Soho art gallery; as well as The P.E.T. Squad Files, which follows a group of ghost chasers. New episodes will appear each week.
In Other Words: CW Seed can serve as a test area and potential sweet new revenue stream for the network.
Google is now rolling out a new version of YouTube for Android that allows users minimize the screen in order to browse channels or perform searches. Playlists are also more easily searched for in the new version so viewers can watch videos back-to-back. The word is that it will be released for iOS devices soon.
TiVo seemed to be having a hard time keeping up with quickly changing digital-video marketplace but took a big step forward this week by refreshing its DVRs to stream live TV and recordings to mobile devices, whether the devices are in the house or out of the house. Plus, its top models now allow big TV watchers to record up to six shows simultaneously. The out-of-home streaming will available this fall on TiVo’s new… wait for it… Roamio models, the fifth generation of TiVo DVRs. Some shows won’t be able to stream out of the house due to technical blocks. Frustration with that will no double lead some TiVo subscribers who can’t find their shows to mutter, Wherefore art thou, Roamio!

Israeli startup Nextpeer aims to make every mobile game multiplayer-enabled. It already has about 10 million monthly actives in its network on iOS, and is now launching on Android with about 2,000 multiplayer games in its network. It also has announced a partnership with cashplay.co, which will allow gamers to take part in cash tournaments against other players.
Video game researcher and consultancy EEDAR‘s latest report, Deconstructing Mobile & Tablet Gaming, says that 84% of the folks who spend between $5 and $20 on free-to-play mobile game think they are getting their money’s worth. Meanwhile, 86% of people who spent $20 or more on their top freemium game said they were satisfied. That drops to 78% for those who spent more than $50 and down to 67% for those who had spent $100 or more. Those who’d spent $50 or more on a single mobile game spent an average of 34% of their gaming time on smartphones, 19% on tablets, 17% on consoles, 24% on PCs, and 6% on gaming handhelds.
Instagram has updated its Brand Guidelines and is particularly interested in dealing with apps that have “Insta” or “Gram” as part of their names. It is banning those apps and sending emails to the owners of such apps asking them to change their names.
Baby Genius is looking to bring its animated characters to life on iPads, iPad Minis, and iPhones. To that end, it will release a series of apps, starting with Jukebox in September. Jukebox will have big buttons so little hands can choose one of the 10 songs offered and then drag a character to the center of the screen to dance like crazy.
Womensforum.com has hired Mike Meyers to be its new senior vice president of corporate development. He was previously vice president of publisher network strategy at Glam Media. D’Alessandro formerly ran sales divisions at ValueClick and Traffic Marketplace… Mark Berniker has been named CNBC Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bureau Chief. Cristin Terrill’s first book, a sci-fi/dystopian tale called All Our Yesterdays, will hit the shelves on Sept. 3, thanks to Disney/Hyperion. The film rights have already been sold and the expectation is apparently that it will sell well because somebody invested some time, energy, and cash into creating a four-part prequel web series to promote it. Even book publishers are getting in on the web-series trend.
