Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04.03.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 3, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
March Madness Live continues to pull in big numbers for Turner Sports, CBS Sports, and the NCAA. The live-streaming service/app has generated 45 million live video streams and more than 12.6 million hours of live video consumption across devices, through the first two weeks of the tournament. Doing some quick math, when compared to the numbers released last week, this means that March Madness Live has generated roughly 8.4 million live streams and 2.6 million hours of video consumption since last Wednesday (obviously, a lot of the dip has to do with the fact that there were significantly fewer teams competing during last weekend than the first weekend). Other critical numbers:
- Across broadband, 5.0 million unique visitors have watched live video (+139% versus the entire 2012 tournament, which reached 2.1 million uniques).
- The mobile apps have combined to reach 3.2 million uniques.
- Over the first two weeks of the tournament, the average broadband viewer consumed 106 minutes of live video, and the average mobile viewer consumed 67 minutes of video.
- Mobile accounted for 43% of live video consumption on Thursday, March 21, and grew to 68% share on Sunday, March 31. Mobile’s share of live viewing minutes also increased, from 23% on the first day of the second round to 34% on Sunday, March 31.
- No word on how many people watched that horrific Kevin Ware injury on their tablets.
Warner Archive Instant is a new subscription streaming service that allows users to access a small lineup of older film and TV titles from the Warner Bros. library, according to Engadget. The service also offers titles from some other studios, including Allied Artists, MGM, and RKO. Priced at $9.99/month, there is a two-week free trial for those interested. As of right now, it’s only available online and on Roku devices.
EPIX’s streaming app is now available on the PlayStation 3. The app offers access to more than 3,000 HD movies, plus an array of TV shows, sports content, and music concerts. Also, on April 19, EPIX will premiere an original documentary about New York Knicks’ power forward Amar’e Stoudemire. The app is only available to those who subscribe to EPIX via a participating pay TV provider. Though PlayStation Plus members will be able to stream a new free movie every week. A PlayStation Vita version of the app will roll out soon as well.
CBS Interactive is partnering with the Academy of Country Music (ACM) for a new online concert series titled ACM Sessions. Available on CBS.com, the series will feature interviews and performances from top country stars, beginning with two-time ACM Award winner Luke Bryan. ACM Sessions is one of two web series CBS is launching in the lead-up to the 48th Annual ACM Awards, which will air live on CBS on April 7, beginning at 8pm ET. The other is Road to the ACM Awards, a web series that follows musicians Dierks Biently, Eli Young Band, and Hunter Hayes on their journey to the ACM Awards.
Unicorn Media is partnering with LiveRail to create a mobile video monetization solution for major publishers. The new solution, which is powered by Unicorn’s video ad insertion technology and LiveRail’s real-time video ad-serving platform, will enable publishers to manage ad trafficking, selection, decisioning, or insertion, thus improving their ability to select the right ad for the right piece of video content, and deliver it to any connected device, according to the companies. Since both companies’ technologies comply with VAST and IAB standards, so does the new integrated product they’re offering.
Adaptly has been awarded the Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer (sPMD) title by Facebook. The sPMD designation means that the company is one of the foremost experts in developing marketing tools and programs to reach audiences on Facebook. sPMDs receive priority product and business support, as well as in-depth training and advance looks at new features. Adaptly, a provider of buying solutions for helping brands increase reach across Facebook, joins the 12 inaugural marketing tech providers in the program.
Mobile payment solutions provider Spindle is integrating its MeNetwork mobile marketing app/platform with TruEffect’s display ad services. This will give TruEffect the ability to deliver location- and time-based offers from retailers and restaurants to mobile users. Per the deal, TruEffect will also enlist its sales force and existing customer base to increase the number of merchants on the MeNetwork app/platform. MeNetwork is designed to enable merchants to push offers and announcements to subscribers. It was featured by Apple during the iOS 6 launch as an example of native Passbook integration.
The number of people in the US who streamed a TV show online or via a connected device in 2012 reached 106.2 million, according to a new report from eMarketer. And that number is expected to grow, with eMarketer projecting the number of “US digital TV viewers” to reach 120.7 million this year, and 130.7 million in 2014, when they will account for more than 50% of the total US internet user population. By 2017, eMarketer believes as many as 145.3 million people in the US will stream a TV show via a connected device.
Apple will begin production on the next iPhone some time during the second quarter, which would make it ready for a summer release, reports The Wall Street Journal. The next iPhone will probably be “similar in size and shape to the current one,” says WSJ. This means that, if true, Apple is following through with a similar strategy it had for previous generations of the iPhone (the 3G version was similar in design to the 3Gs, as were the iPhone 4 and 4s). Apple is also working with its manufacturing partners to develop a cheaper iPhone, which could arrive as early as the latter half of this year.
Frank Kavilanz has joined NowThis News as its new SVP/Strategy and Business Development. NowThis produces short-form news videos covering breaking news, politics, celebrities, tech, and trending topics, all of which are available online, via its iOS and Android apps, or on partner sites like Mashable, MSN, and BuzzFeed. Kavilanz comes from NBC News, where he served as VP/Strategy and Business Development, overseeing the outfit’s portfolio of news sites, including NBCNews.com, Today.com, and MSNBC.com.
Media6Degrees (m6d), an ad tech company, has appointed Joanne Yun to the newly created position of Director/Sales Strategy and Operations. She will be instrumental in helping m6d develop its vertical sales strategy as well as manage the overall sales operations process.
Sonobi Media, a digital ad platform for publishers, has hired Paul DeBraccio to be its new VP/Nation Sales, and Dennis Martin as its new VP/Global Sales and Business Development. Both will report directly to Michael Connolly, CEO of Sonobi, and will work together to attract new sales talent and business. DeBraccio will also be tasked with opening and staffing Sonobi’s new NY office, while Martin will be responsible for Sonobi’s global growth and its B-to-B relationships.
Digital media services provider SpotGenie Partners has named Joel Brand as its new Director/Video Post Operations. He will be responsible for helping clients their spots for the air, including video transcoding, closed captioning, slating, editorial, tagging, and quality control. He will report directly to SpotGenie President/CEO Wayne Dykes.
David Thorpe, VP/Strategy and Analytics at SapientNitro, an interactive marketing, creative design, and tech services agency, has been named to the UK’s Cabinet Office as Deputy Director/Digital Policy in the Government Digital Service (GDS) team. He will continue to serve in his role at SapientNitro as well. The GDS team is tasked with creating digital services that enable the government to better connect with citizens. Reporting to Mike Bracken, Executive Director of GDS, Thorpe will focus specifically on enhancing the impact of digital communications on public policy formation and policy making.

NBCUniversal is launching a new trade ad campaign for the Upfront season centering on word “Amplified.” The concept will be adaptable to fit different thematic ideas, which will precede the “Amplified” tag. For example, the company’s non-NewFront but NewFront-like event on April 24 is called “Digital.Amplified.” The goal of the campaign is to convey that NBCU is now working as a unified portfolio to help marketers reach consumers across screens and platforms. All creative for the campaign was created by NBCU Integrated Media’s in-house agency.
Here’s why I think this campaign is especially notable: NBCU has also launched a trade-geared website for Amplified. It offers stats and relevant info about the company and its capabilities in the form of video clips, behind-the-scenes footage, animated gifs, text, and interviews with on-air and off-air talent. Additionally, NBCU is launching an augmented reality ad campaign, which will allow people to interact with print ads running across various publications. For example, using the Aurasma app and pointing the phone at a “journalism” box featuring Brian Williams’ image will pull up video clips, sizzle reels, and behind-the-scenes footage. If you’re going to say you have all of these cool digital capabilities, you might as well show them off, right?
