Cynopsis: DIGITAL

04/28/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 28, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The drama around Gizmodo‘s purloined G4 iPhone continues as San Mateo County Police searched the home of Jason Chen, the blogger who profiled the next-generation iPhone prototype for the website, seizing multiple pieces of equipment including computers, hard drives and digital cameras. The warrant displayed on Gizmodo.com was approved for search and seizure of property “used as a means of committing a felony.” Gawker Media COO Gaby Darby is fighting the seizure on the basis that Jason is a paid full-time journalist working for the company and is therefore protected by California’s shield laws. A deeper look into the investigation from Yahoo News notes that the raid came at the behest the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) – a special high-tech task force commissioned to work on computer industry crimes – and that Apple sits on the task force”s steering committee.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Verizon’s FiOS TV service is launching new service to allow customers to watch online videos from YouTube as well as listen to internet radio services directly on their TVs. The service, an add on to Verizon’s Media Manager offering featuring content from Blip.tv, Dailymotion and Veoh, will be available immediately to HD DVR set-top customers who download a plugin on their PC. (A Mac solution is forthcoming.)

HBO
hopes to get True Blood fans salivating with 6 original minisodes of the show, written by creator Alan Ball and featuring True Blood’s cast members. Debuting this week on Yahoo TV, hbo.com and the True Blood Facebook page, the 3-5 minute stories offer a glimpse into future storylines and will appear weekly leading up to the premiere of Season 3 on June 13.

Gannett’s MomsLikeMe.com social networking site is announcing a new affiliate partnership program this morning with the Bay Area News Group. The site will help drive national sales to Bay Area users and sell local ads across the community sites. Bay Area News sites such as MercuryNews.com will promote MomsLikeMe.com content both online and in print.

MSG Media has launched a redesign of MSG Network’s MSG.com destination site, removing clutter, improving navigation tools and introducing an integrated video player featuring sharing across multiple social media sites. MSG plans to add content from new writers and contributors later this spring who will cover their local NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL teams.

CBS Interactive‘s “Live on Letterman” music series returns with Brooklyn’s own MGMT on Tuesday May 11. The webcast, which follows the band’s taped performance on Letterman, will be featured online at CBS RADIO, CBS Television Stations, the LATE SHOW at CBS.com,
TV.com, etonline.com, theinsider.com, Last.fm and mp3.com.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Dori Media Group has signed a contract with Ongoing Group and CTN to produce “uMan”, an interactive cross platform reality format that won an GSM award for Best Mobile TV or Video service this year. The show places 8 contestants in a lab for 21 days in which each of their actions are controlled by viewers at home via mobile devices. CTN, a production division of Ongoing Group, will produce the format for the Portuguese speaking territories: Brazil, Portugal, Angola and Mozambique. The “uMan” format has been sold to a total of 13 countries since its debut in July 2009.

GE Capital and NBC Universal’s Peacock Equity fund announced participation in a $14 million third round of funding for Healthline Networks, led by IGC Investor Growth Capital with Reed Elsevier Ventures also participating. Healthline provides health information services and advertising across a network of health-themed publishers, reaching nearly 100 million uniques per month.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Adconion’s branded content producer RedLever has launched a new interactive music platform to help whip up engagement around Tone body wash. The “Tone VideoBox” packages online music videos from Sony Music Entertainment/Epic Records artists such as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez (who recently left the label) with messaging about Tone’s new Daily Detox body wash. The campaign, created by Henkel and OMD, will reach audiences via the Adconion ad network – the company that acquired the remains of online video start-up Joost in March. The “VideoBox” campaign is RedLever’s second, following a similar program to raise awareness for McDonald’s late night menu last summer. The McDonald’s campaign delivered an 81% completion rate and a 10% engagement rate, according to RedLever.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Apple purchased boutique Austin, TX-based chip maker Intrinsity for a reported $121 million, one of the companies that worked on the iPad processor, per the NYTimes.

Google
acquired Israel-based widget developer LabPixes, one of the first companies to create third party gadget apps for the iGoogle platform including the popular Flood It gadget. The company will continue to be based in its Tel Aviv office and will anchor iGoogle development efforts across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Online video platform Ooyala completed a new integration with YouTube allowing publishers easily publish and analyze videos placed on the video sharing juggernaut. The feature, being utilized by clients such as Telegraph TV in the UK, makes it simple to search and gather relevant syndicated or user-generated videos to enhance stories and drive engagement on their sites.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Weekday circulation at the nation’s daily newspapers declined by a not-as-bad-as-expected 8.7% during the 6 months ending March 31, according the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Sunday circulation fell another 6.5%. The Wall Street Journal was the only major paper to pick up subscribers, helped out by 414,000 electronic subs from the web and devices such as the Kindle and the iPad. The News Corp.-owned paper widened its lead over Gannett’s USA Today as the nation’s top paper, which dropped from 2.1 million to 1.8 million subscribers.

The number of unique viewers of online video increased by just 1.3% in March over a year ago while total streams, streams per viewer and time per viewer all decreased year-over-year as well as month-over-month, according to Nielsen. Only Yahoo, Facebook, Google (independent of YouTube) and Disney Online experienced an increase in monthly viewers compared to Feb. Netflix’s Watch Instantly service dominated in terms of time per viewer (428.9 min.), followed by Hulu (272.4 min.) and ABC Family (183.3 min.)

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Also recognizing that the mobile web browser is alive and well on larger screen handsets, the Msnbc Digital Network introduced a smartphone-optimized version of its website Msnbc.com that will load automatically when you visit it from an iPhone, iPad, Palm Pre or Android-powered device. News categories are outlined at the top of the page followed by scrollable items presented as top stories, news, business, politics, sports, entertainment, health, etc. Multimedia features including video and sideshows are also easily found further down, but the experience is simplified and easy to manage. Hilton Hotels is sponsoring the site on a semi-exclusive basis for the first month with little clutter to compete with. Msnbc’s localized EveryBlock also launched a mobile version, featuring hyperlocal news in 16 top cities. EveryBlock is worth checking out if you haven’t seen it; it allows you to type in your neighborhood to pull up new news stories, photos, reviews, crime reports, 911 dispatches, real estate listings and business permits posted in your neck of the woods. EveryBlock sources multiple online services including Yelp, Truvia and local blogs, aggregating what’s relevant to users at a micro level. Sorry – no badges are given, though. (“Badges, we don’t need no stinkin’ badges.”)
