DirecTV will make Sony‘s Adam Sandler comedy “Just Go With It,” its inaugural premium “Home Premiere” VOD release for the extra premium price of $29.99 on Thursday. The movie was released in theaters on Feb. 11, grossing $102.3 million in North American theaters. Note- due to strict anti piracy guidelines, only 6 million of DirecTV’s 19.2 million customers will have access to the movie – only customers with HD DVR’s and other technical parameters, per the WSJ.
Walt Disney agreed to provide online movie rentals to U.K. viewers via Lovefilm, reports AllThingsD, the European subscription-based service acquired by Amazon in January. Disney plans to make more than 50 titles available to Lovefilm subscribers, including classics such as “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” and more recent movies including “Tron: Legacy.”
Yahoo is ramping up its original video productions this year, debuting new shows such as celebrity-themed fitness, nutrition, and beauty series “Inside and Out” on omg! this week, in a bid to capture some TV upfront ad dollars, according to Adweek. The plan is to create more scripted shows and less talking-head wrap up shows.
Yahoo also announced it is shuttering its Yahoo Buzz social bookmarking site beginning April 21.
Toronto-based E-Book start-up Kobo has raised an additional $50 million in capital led by an unnamed institutional investor. Kobo, which now offers some 2.3 million eBooks, newspapers and magazines in its store, kicked off its European expansion last week, with the announcement of plans to launch local content stores in Germany – the largest book market outside of the US – and Spain starting next month.
Social web platform Adaptly has raised a first round of funding worth $2.7 million from First Round Capital, Kirschenbaum Bond Senecal & Partners, Charles River Ventures and Lerer Ventures. The company allows brands to purchase ads across social networks including Twitter, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon with a single media buy while offering real-time insights and auto-optimization services to clients.
Sprint has agreed to invest “a minimum” of $1 billion in the form of wholesale pricing terms into the Kirkland, WA-based Clearwire WiMax joint venture, helping to shore up its shaky finances. The agreement brings clarity to their relationship and allows them to push forward with their respective 4G strategies, according to the companies.
Apple has filed another high-profile lawsuit, this time against Samsung accusing the Korean electronics giant of “slavishly” ripping off its designs and interface for the iPhone and iPad, reports the WSJ. The 38-page suit shows side-by-side comparisons of the Apple iPhone 3GS, released in June 2009 and the Galaxy S i9000 model, released in March 2010, pointing out similarities in packaging and icons for software applications such as music, phone, texting and contacts.
Meanwhile, Apple has asked a federal judge to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit against the company that alleges it limits the choice of iPod users by linking the device to the iTunes music store, per Bloomberg. Apple argues that blocking iPod music downloads using competitors’ software was intended to improve downloading quality for iTunes customers.
Dish Network has vowed to keep open a total of 600 brick and mortar Blockbuster stores following its acquisition of the bankrupt chain, per The Dallas Morning News. Blockbuster currently operates a total of 1,751 outlets in the U.S.
Despite rapid gains by Google’s Android platform in recent months, Apple’s iOS outreaches Andriod by more than 2-to-1 according to a new ComScore MobiLens report – the first to take advantage of public data showing demographics of users of connected devices. The unduplicated audience reach of the Apple iOS platform across iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches revealed a combined iOS installed base of 37.9 million users, comprising a 16.2% share of U.S. mobile subscribers for the past three months ending Feb. 2011. (Android OS attracted 23.7 million users for just over a 10% share.) New research also indicates that the iPad’s success has crossed over into a broader demographic beyond Apple “fanboys” that rush out to get the latest Apple gadget. Ages 25-34 year olds are the most avid iPad users in relation to the total mobile audience (17.6 percent).

Here’s a major entertainment release – Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Crackle brand has launched a new Crackle App for iOS devices, offering free access to ad supported, full length films and TV shows on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A quick perusal of the selection reveals recent hits “The Da Vinci Code”, “Pineapple Express” and “Big Daddy”. The content can be started and stopped for later playback but commercial breaks cannot be fast-forwarded. The app reached the #1 free app in the entertainment category for both the iPad and the iPhone upon release yesterday.
CNN has expanded its news reading app to Android devices running OS 2.1 and above. The app includes news of the day through text, audio and photos and live and on-demand video, along with direct access to the popular CNN iReport citizen news hub. It also draws on the resources of CNN Radio, featuring a robust section of audio content.
NBA Digital and Playdom launched a new NBA Dynasty social game on Facebook enabling fans to create their own dream team, choosing amongst 9,000 pro NBA players dating back to 1946.
Former AOL digital veteran Joe Ruffolo has been tapped by as SVP of ABC Digital News, replacing Paul Slavin, who headed up digital since 2007. He is joined by Susan Mercandetti, who returns to ABC News as VP/Business Development and Partnerships and Barbara Fedida who also returning to ABC News as SVP for Talent and Business.
NBCUniversal has upped Salil Mehta to the newly created position of COO and CFO of NBCUniversal’s Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media division (E&DN/IM). He will oversee biz dev and planning across the entire E&DN/IM portfolio, including Telemundo, mun2, Bravo Media, Oxygen Media and Style and the digital properties iVillage, DailyCandy, Swirl and Fandango.
Kim Notario joins audience platform Martini Media as VP/Midwest Sales out of Detroit. Kim was ad director for Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and also led the Yahoo! auto sales division before joining Martini. She is joined by Cynthia Serrano, who has been hired as VP/Eastern Sales out of New York. Cynthia was digital sales director for Essence Communications online, a division of Time Inc.

ProPublica, the indie non-profit website that conducts its own investigative reporting to syndicate out to various partners, has just won its second Pulitzer Prize. ProPublica reporters Jesse Eisinger and Jake Bernstein have been awarded a Pulitzer for National Reporting for their Wall Street Money Machine series, covering how some Wall Street bankers first delayed then greatly worsened the financial crisis – seeking to enrich themselves at the expense of their clients and their own firms. Kudos also to NPR programs Planet Money and This American Life, which helped them in their riveting, get-you-blood-up reporting. Now if the reports actually lead to some action from the SEC and Congress, there may really be a reason to celebrate.
