Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 18, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

The Library of Congress and Ad Council are teaming up with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) to launch a new Public Service Advertising (PSA) campaign Book People Unite (www.bookpeopleunite.org). Supported by research that shows kids who are good readers in early grades are more likely to become better learners, the PSA campaign aims to communicate to parents the importance of reading to their school-aged kids. Created by advertising agency Mother New York, the new TV, print, outdoor and digital PSAs feature well-known book characters, including Pinocchio, Madeline, Humpty Dumpty, Curious George and Raggedy Ann and Andy. The TV PSA includes an original song produced by the band The Roots, and featuring vocals from celebrities Jack Black, Chris Martin (Coldplay), John Legend, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jason Schwartzman, Consequence, Regina Spektor, Nate Ruess (fun.), Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia) and Melanie Fiona. LeVar Burton also appears in the TV PSA as well as in a radio spot. The characters in the TV version of the PSA were brought to life through uniquely crafted puppets by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and Curious Pictures created the animated characters.

LICENSING

Big Tent Entertainment and Mezco Toyz, a manufacturer and marketer of collectible action figures and dolls, enter into a licensing deal for a new line of collectibles featuring the character Domo. Slated to arrive at retail later in 2012, the new Domo line will include bobbleheads, clip-on figures, action figures, and wind-up walking toys. Mezco Toyz unveiled the assortment of new collectible Domo products earlier this year at the New York International Toy Fair.

Marathon Media has completed licensing deals for its Redakai, Conquer the Kairu property in South Korea. Marathon appoints Joon International as the consumer product agent for the series in South Korea, while the toys will be distributed by Spin Master‘s local distributor Toyskool. Additionally, the Redakai TCG will launch in South Korea over the summer, with the rest of the toy line will hit retail in fall 2012.  Joon International has already signed several key licensing deals with Zeus (role play toys), BnB (puzzles), Elite Fancy Base (stationery), and Unicorn (stickers, activity books). The first licensed products will appear in retail outlets at the beginning of this summer 2012. Cartoon Network is the licensing agent in the US, Latin America and EMEA (excluding France and Spain). Marathon Media hold the global TV and licensing rights excluding North America, which are held by Spin Master, along with all toy rights.

Disney Interactive is developing Disney Princess: My Fairytale Adventure, a new interactive video game, based on the Disney Princess franchise, which will release for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Windows PC/Mac in fall 2012. In the game, a spell has been cast over the Princess worlds and players take on the role of an apprentice to the Fairy Godmother and need to use their magic wand to help the Princesses, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Ariel, Belle and Tiana, restore peace and “happily ever after” to each kingdom. Each of the Princess worlds lets players interact with other Disney characters, including Lumiere, Pascal, Flounder, Gus, who will help guide them through missions and progress though the game. The title features a range of quests and mini-games, including platforming, hide and seek, and puzzles, which are designed to test the skills of players of multiple ages. Players can also customize their avatar and room in the Fairy Godmother’s Castle, using gems earned throughout the game to trade for items in the in-game “Wishing Well” store.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Hub continues its focus on the importance of kids learning about the value of money with a new animated Secret Millionaires Club special, Neither a Borrower not a Lender Be, Dude, premiering on the network Sunday, April 28 at 2p. The Secret Millionaires Club specials, of which this is the second, feature well-known financial investor Warren Buffet and is produced by A Squared Entertainment and its co-founder Andy Heyward.

The third season of the comedy Good Luck Charlie is set to premiere with back-to-back episodes Sunday, May 6, 2012 8-9p on Disney Channel. The new season will feature the birth of the newest member of the family, baby Duncan, a name selected by 25+ million viewers on DisneyChannel.com, in a one-hour special this summer. New episodes of Good Luck Charlie air Sundays on Disney Channel. Created by Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen (Suddenly Susan and What I Like About You), Good Luck Charlie is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions.

Channel 5 (UK) acquires Sesame Workshop‘s new 3D CGI animated series Abby’s Flying Fairy School, staring the popular Sesame Street character Abby Cadabby, for its daily milkshake! preschool block. Abby’s Flying Fairy School will launch Sunday, April 29 on milkshake! Milkshake! airs weekdays from 6a-9:15a and weekends 6a-10a. Peter De Seve, the designer for the film Ice Age, created Abby’s 3-D look on Abby’s Flying Fairy School.

Entertainment One (eOne) licenses the kid’s live-action ‘food adventure’ series Taste Buds (32×30) to Qubo Channel, a kid-aimed TV and online service, for the US.  Taste Buds (www.tastebudstv.com) will make its US debut on Qubo this summer 2012. Produced by marblemedia, Taste Buds is designed to encourage kids to think about what they choose to eat and explore new foods with the help of hosts making kid-centric and kitchen safe recipes. eOne Television handles worldwide distribution for the series.

Marathon Media, part of Zodiak Kids, inks a deal a TV deal for its boy-targeted Redakai, Conquer the Kairu (52×30) in South Korea with the kid cable and satellite channel JEI, which will debut the series this month. Redakai was developed by Marathon Media (Totally Spies, Gormiti) and Spin Master (Bakugan), as a TV series and a TCG. The TV series has also been acquired by Cartoon Network (US, EMEA, Latin America), CITV (UK) Network 10 (Australia), Gulli and Canal J (France), Clan TV (Spain), Panda Biggs (Portugal), YTV (Canada), DR1 (Denmark), TV3 (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), and Magnetika Plus (Ex-Yugoslavia).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ludorum‘s COO and Co-founder Charles Caminada announces he will step down and retire from the UK-based preschool company at its annual general meeting on June 28, 2012. He will simultaneously retire from the Ludorum Board of Directors as well. Ludorum is best known for its preschool series Chuggington. Caminada has toiled in the entertainment industry for 37 years, which includes 15 at the Executive Director of HIT Entertainment and the last seven at Ludorum, says “I’ve decided it is a good time to be looking at some other things to do in my life.” Caminada will maintain a substantial shareholding Ludorum.

Discovery Channel appoints Jason Hyde as VP/Research. In his new position, Hyde will develop and direct all network research efforts, and he will also act as a strategic advisor to the network’s senior management team, while overseeing all research studies, program tests, fieldwork and analysis. Based at Discovery’s Maryland headquarters, Hyde reports to Edward Sabin, EVP and Group Chief Operating Officer, Discovery & TLC Networks. Hyde joins Discovery from Scripps Networks Interactive where he was VP for HGTV and DIY Network Research. He previously worked in research analysis audience research at The Weather Channel and Turner Broadcasting Systems, as well as in research positions at WAGA-Fox TV Atlanta and Blair Television.

Cinedigm Entertainment Group names Larry McCourt as SVP/Software and Sales Marketing. McCourt will report to Cinedigm’s President/Software, Jim Miller. In his new position, McCourt is charged with expanding and strengthening a worldwide client base for the company’s software products, including theatrical exhibitors and distributors, as well as intellectual property owners. Most recently, McCourt was National Account Sales Manager with Sony Digital Cinema. He previously toiled in exhibition an distribution at Nielsen/EDI, AMC Entertainment and in theatrical sales and distribution at Savoy Pictures, Gramercy Pictures, Live Entertainment and Artisan Entertainment. Cinedigm Entertainment Group is a division of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of its animated series The Legend of Korra on Saturday, April 14, 11a was watched by 4.5 million Total Viewers, and was basic cable’s top kids’ show and top animated program for the week with total viewers. The series, which continues Nickelodeon’s animated franchise Avatar: The Last Airbender, also delivered increases across all kid and tween demos, K2-11 (1.9 million) an increase of +17%, K6-11 (1.2 million) up by +36%, and Tweens 9-14 (1.3 million) up +125%. The Legend of Korra also serves as the network’s most-watched animated series premiere in three years. The first episode of the series was featured on iTunes, Xbox, Playstation, Amazon, VOD and Vudu in advance of its on-air premiere, and was downloaded and streamed 500,000+ times.
