Research In Motion put credence to the rumors that RIM is indeed releasing a tablet computer at the BlackBerry developer’s conference, with a U.S. street date set for early next year and an international roll out pegged for Q2 2011. Described as the first “professional grade” tablet, the PlayBook will run on a new operating system developed by recent acquisition QNX and display most web video (including Flash,) as well as all content developed for BlackBerry smartphones. Bluetooth connectivity will enable smartphone content that actually resides on a secured server to be viewed by authorized users through the PlayBook. Specs include a 7-inch multi-touch display, a 1 GHz dual core processor, front and rear facing cameras, 1080p HD video playback and 1 GB of RAM. RIM is planning to launch both 3G and 4G versions of the device.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Sony Pictures, Disney, and Warner Bros. are all in talks to supply both Time Warner Cable and Comcast with movies for a new premium VOD service featuring recently-released movies, per Bloomberg. Disney is also in talks to provide films for the streaming media services of gaming consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3.
 
Casting Call: WEtv.com is putting out a call to brides-to-be for next season’s Bridezillas show. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 2, engaged gals can upload a pitch video at WEtv.com and visitors to the site will have the chance to comment on and vote for their favorite entrants. The winner will have a chance to appear on the show and net $2,500.

Online photo marketplace Cutcuster launched stockphotolicense.com, an educational blog to answer questions about image licensing, photo copyright and other issues related to fair use.
 
Call for Content: The People’s Choice Awards is holding its second annual Favorite Film Pitch contest at AFM in Nov. and is currently accepting video pitches. Industry judges will select 5 finalists whose pitches will be posted to PeoplesChoice.com immediately following the CBS broadcast of the Awards show on Jan. 5 and fans will vote on the winner.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
“Project Devil” is the name of AOL‘s new next generation ad system launched yesterday at Advertising Week, designed to better engage audiences and attract more brand advertisers to the web. With founding partners including General Mills’ Cheerios and Pillsbury Crescents, P&G’s Olay, Sprint and Lexus, AOL hopes the devil will be in the details of a new ad unit that features three customizable panels equipped to handle streaming video, apps, 3D rotation, quizzes, polls, etc. The format debuted yesterday on AOL’s Moviefone and StyleList sites and is set to roll out across subsequent properties in the coming weeks.
 
Apple‘s share of the mobile ad pie will grow to 21% by the end of the year at the expense of Google and Microsoft but the company will still trail market leader Google and its AdMob network, according to new IDC projections published in BusinessWeek.com. The number of advertisers committing to use Apple’s iAd network has doubled since June when the system launched with Unilever, Best Buy and DirecTV as charter sponsors.
 
MSNBC introduced a new online ad rendering system, dubbed ServeView, that promises to more accurately verify ad impressions across its site. As viewers click on content, the ServeView technology runs on the page and will only render the ad once the ad location is within the viewable area of the consumer’s display.
 
The IAB is calling on agencies, marketers and publishers to submit their best ideas for new IAB-approved ad formats, an industry seal of approval that currently makes up 80% of all online ads served, according to the bureau. Submissions will be judged on their ability to communicate branding, provide a positive user experience, integrate with publishers’ content and be adopted by a large segment of the industry. 
 
The IAB’s Local Committee also unveiled new guidelines at its annual MIXX conference to help members target local markets. The research covers IP-Based Geo-Targeting, Search Targeting, Explicit Profile Data Targeting, Behavioral Targeting, Mobile/Location-Based Targeting and Contextual Targeting.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Federal law enforcement officials are working on a comprehensive “wiretap” bill that make it easier for the FBI, The Justice Dept., and other agencies to monitor encrypted communications on the internet, reports the NYTimes. Federal officials are seeking access to digital formats including email, social network posts and Skype instant messaging as the current 1994 wiretap law does not currently apply to such services.
 
FourthWall Media partnered with eBay’s PayPal to create a new interactive TV solution to enable direct purchases on television with the click of a single “buy” button. The T-commerce app will be deployed on EBIF widgets from third party providers such as eBay and Yellow Pages.
 
VC fund Shamrock Capital has reached an agreement with UK-based ITV PLc and Technicolor to purchase a majority stake in cinema ad firm Screenvision. ITV will sell its entire 50% stake to Shamrock while Technicolor will retain a minority share and continue to provide film and digital services to the company.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
In a bid to simplify the process of comparing viewers from the TV and online worlds, Nielsen unveiled a new Online Campaign Ratings program to compare online panel data with specific demographic info from participating publishers. The new metrics systems will follow along the lines of TV ratings, incorporating standard TV concepts such as Gross Ratings Points (GRP), reach and frequency – available days after a campaign launches on the web. Nielsen says the cross-platform system will be tested with a group of major brands and agencies this fall including P&G, Verizon Wireless, Starcom MediaVest and Facebook and will be submitted to the MRC for accreditation at a later date.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Sharp
unveiled a pair of eBook readers based on Google’s Android operating system that go on sale in Japan in Dec. and are scheduled to be released in the U.S. and Europe in 2011. The two “Galapagos” e-books, available in with 5.5-inch or 10.8-inch screens, feature LCD color displays and will launch with eBook and e-magazine stores. The Japanese Galapagos models will support the XMDF format but Sharp plans add support of the ePub format for the release the U.S. models.
 
To complement the paid mobile Dexter game, Showtime has introduced a free Dexter app for the iPhone/iPod Touch, timed for the season 5 premere. The app includes behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, episode previews and a social trivia game.
 
Time Warner Cable has signed on to use American Roamer‘s CellMaps wireless coverage mapping app to allow 3G or 4G mobile customers to check TWC service availability down to detailed street level.

Paul Kontonis, Eric Korsh and Teal Newland have joined digital agency Digitas as VP/Group Directors, Content Strategy and Development, overseeing the company’s The Third Act content platform (which launched to Real Women of Philadelphia campaign for Kraft.) Paul comes over from Edelman’s MATTER agency, Eric joins from Scout Productions and Teal formerly worked on branded entertainment for 60Frames.
 
Former Comcast Spotlight CFO John Drain has been tapped by Hearst Television to serve as SVP/Finance, effective Oct. 4, 2010. He joins Jeana Stanley, who has been upped to VP/Financial Planning. She and Al Lustgarten, Hearst Television VP of Administration & IT, will report to Mr. Drain.
 
Jeff Babka has been named CFO of New York-based contextual advertising company Vibrant. He reports to Doug Stevenson, co-founder and CEO.
 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Microsoft has given up hosting its own Windows Live Spaces blogging platform but has chosen a top platform to partner with. The easy-to-use WordPress.com will now become the default blogging platform for Windows Live and Live Spaces’ 30 million users will have six months to migrate their blogs to WordPress. (A new importer app should make the process pretty easy to figure out and a new publicize tool will enable bloggers to automatically share updates with all Windows Live Messenger users.) For Microsoft the decision is the latest in a series intended to concentrate its resources on fewer initiatives and make Windows Live inclusive, rather than operating a million “us too” sites. (For instance, video sharing site Soapbox was put to rest last year.) The deal truly makes WordPress the dominant blogging platform on the web and will likely lead to further consolidation. WordPress has long been popular for its generous 3GB of free storage space and its integrated metrics platform.
