YouTube is making plans to develop and offer video “channels” that would broadcast regularly scheduled content on popular topics such as fashion and sports, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Apparently, the video site has requested some content for the channels within the next 60 days, preparing for a possible launch in early 2012. According to the same unnamed sources the WSJ cites, Google is paying various sums of money ranging from a few hundred thousand to millions of dollars to content creators for producing videos. And they want this programming to be similar to regular TV. These sources also indicate that Google does not want to offer a competitor to television, but instead a video service that would position itself as a better alternative to, and in effect drive away viewers from, traditional TV.


Amazon.com has signed a licensing agreement with FOX to bring the studio’s library of movies and TV shows to Amazon Prime’s instant streaming service. The deal will expand Amazon Prime’s selection of videos to over 11,000 titles.
DreamWorks Animation announced on Sunday that it was ending its deal with HBO in favor of a new content deal with Netflix that will begin in 2013. As per the terms of the agreement, Netflix will pay $30 million per DreamWorks film for an undisclosed number of years in order to stream them to its subscribers.
Zynga‘s “CityVille” Facebook game will now also be available on Google+. Accordingly, it will be titled “CityVille+” and will seek to unseat Rovio’s “Angry Birds,” which currently claims to be the most popular game on Google’s social network.
HealthiNation will use Roku‘s streaming video players to bring its health education and lifestyle video content to Roku customers for free. HealthiNation’s multi-platform content offering, which currently includes distribution to digital cable TV, the web and doctors’ offices, will now be expanded to Connected TVs via this deal.
Rural Media Group, a provider of rural-centric content and television programming, has launched a corporate division, with its own website, that will focus on the international distribution and sale of both its programming and RURAL TV channel.


Facebook will provide up to $10 million in free advertising for small businesses starting in January 2012. In partnership with the National Federation of Independent Business and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the effort is meant to give 200,000 small businesses a $50 boost in online and social media advertising. The collaborative effort includes webinars, collateral and other helpful tips to teach business owners how to reach new customers on Facebook. Comcast Spotlight
‘s interactive TV ad platform has delivered over 1,000 ad campaigns achieving more than 2.7 billion ad impressions to date. The platform is currently available in 50 markets and 15 million households.
Vizu Corporation
, while announcing the launch of its “Value in Video” initiative that will seek to provide advertisers and publishers the ability to measure customer sentiment in-stream and in real-time regardless of how the video is being delivered, also unveiled enhancements to its Brand Lift Metrics platform. Specifically, it will now fully support the VAST/VPAID standards developed by the Interactive Advertising Bureau.
To promote a new burger that is only available for a limited time, chain restaurant Red Robin is using in-app digital video ads. The ads are set to appear in mobile video apps for ABC News and USA Today, among others. The digital video ads will also run on video sites.


If AT&T sells off some of its spectrum in order to push through its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile, it could lead to MetroPCS and Leap Wireless becoming top-tier national competitors. However, this could actually be a beneficial thing for AT&T. “It is to AT&T’s advantage to have that happen,” says Susan Rudd, director of Strategy Analytics, the research firm that conducted this analysis, “MetroPCS and Leap won’t be a real challenge to AT&T’s segment but it would increase the competition in the areas that people are worried about.” The DOJ listed 97 wireless markets that they believe would face significantly reduced competition as a result of an AT&T and T-Mobile merger. Ad technology companies Donovan Data Systems, Inc. and MediaBank LLC are merging to create a new company called MediaOcean. According a report in The Wall Street Journal, the companies value their combined worth at $1.5 billion and will process $150 billion in global advertising spending each year.
Mobile technology company Myriad Group and Indian telecommunications service provider Vodafone Essar, Ltd. are teaming up to deliver social networking and messaging services over SMS and USSD for over 143 million subscribers in India. This agreement includes access to Myriad Updates, a text-based mobile social networking service meant for low-end mobile phones as it does not require a data plan.


A recent research conducted by About.com, in conjunction with Latitude, indicated that users who search on the internet can be placed under three different kinds of behaviors: “Answer Me” (46% of all searches), “Educate Me” (26%) and “Inspire Me” (28%). Titled the “Three Mindsets of Search Study,” the survey also gauged how search users defined “experts” and the usefulness of a brand’s own expertise when displayed through its advertisements. For example, 77% of respondents indicated that ads can be useful when relevant to their search, while 88% felt that the best ads are ones that work with an information source to help them get what they need.


Showtime Networks
unveiled the “SHOWTIME Social” app for the iPad yesterday. The second-screen viewing experience app will provide viewers the opportunity to participate in live discussions, gauge reactions in real-time and explore content and information as they watch live programming on the network, including all of Showtime’s original series.
The United States Postal Service has introduced a BlackBerry application to accompany its existing iOS, Android and other mobile and web apps. “Anything that a customer can do in a post office should eventually be available on a mobile device,” said Joseph Adams, general manager of digital access at USPS, Washington.
Inova Technology
has released an Android version of its existing iPhone app, titled “Trakkers,” that enables trade show exhibitors to grab the contact information of people that visit their booth with their mobile phones.

File this under the coolest thing you’ll read about today: NASA wants you to build them apps for smartphones, tablets, desktops and websites. It’s called the “International Space Apps Challenge” and NASA is calling on developers, scientists, engineers and even you, regular citizen who has the capacity to build web applications, to build apps that use public scientific data to study things of “global importance,” such as weather impacts on global economy and the depletion of ocean resources. The competition will take place in 2012 and is a collaborative effort between NASA and other space agencies around the world. As NASA puts it, “come make the future with us.” Indeed, NASA, indeed.
