Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/18/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Shazam’s second-screen service (“Shazam for TV“) now supports nearly all programming that is available on some 160 channels in the US, with the exception of some “local-only programming” such as news broadcasts, the company announced yesterday. Consumers can now use the Shazam app to tag TV shows airing on any of the supported channels in order to access additional show information such as cast details and photos, music in the show, celebrity gossip, trivia, celebrity tweets, and links to additional content. In addition, Shazam said different types of programming, when tagged via the app, will bring up different results. For example, sports events will offer stats, scores, and schedules instead of cast information.Shazam is also enhancing the social capabilities of its iOS and Android apps. When users activate the new “Shazam Friends” feature in the app:
- Users will have the ability to see what TV programs their Facebook friends are tagging and then comment about those tags directly in the app (this will be available in the “coming weeks”).
- Have tags appear on their Facebook Timeline.
- Have the ability to “Like” tags in the app (this will be available in the “coming months”).
Yahoo has premiered its new comedy series Suit Up. All eight episodes of the show, which follows a crisis guru (Marc Evan Jackson of Reno 911) as he tries to fix the mess at a scandal-ridden college athletic program, are now available on Yahoo Screen. Announced this past August, the show is produced by Fox Digital Studios in association with DirecTV. The current plan is to offer Suit Up as a Yahoo exclusive for a couple of weeks, after which the show will get a broadcast premiere in January 2013 via DirecTV’s Audience Network.
NBCUniversal‘s women-centric iVillage property recently launched a Guest Editor series with the most high-profile lady in the country, First Lady Michelle Obama. Now iVillage has unveiled the list of the upcoming Guest Editors who will join the site one week at a time through the end of 2012. The roster includes Jessica Simpson, helming the position this week, musician Alicia Keys in October, Dr. Mehmet Oz in November, and former reality star Lauren Conrad in December. Selected and requested by the iVillage community, these Guest Editors will share details about their projects through editorial content they produce and curate. Select Guest Editors will participate in a series of video interviews with iVillage Chief Correspondent Kelly Wallace, for which visitors will be able to submit questions. This announcement also includes information on a new “360 sales package” tied to the Guest Editor series, which can be reviewed below under “Digital Advertising.”
DOGTV, a new channel for dogs is now available on the Roku streaming platform. The channel allows consumers to access all of DOGTV’s programming, which can be streamed to the television set so your dogs can watch something when you’re away from the home. DOGTV says all of its content has been scientifically developed to cater to a dog’s unique sense of sight, hearing, and movement detection. It’s available for a $9.99 monthly subscription on all Roku streaming players. If you’re wondering how successful a channel of this ilk can be, DOGTV says that since it launched this past February as an on-demand offering in the San Diego market, it’s been viewed by more than 30% of the dog-owning households in that test market. The channel will still be available for a limited time in San Diego (via Time Warner Cable and Cox), and can also be accessed online for $9.99/month.
Ipsy.com is a new online beauty site co-founded by YouTube star Michelle Phan. Launched yesterday, the site offers video tutorials focused on beauty tips for both novices and pros. The site will feature videos from Phan, along with several other stylists who also have large followings on YouTube. All together, Phan and the other “ipsy stylists” have a reach of more than 50 million monthly viewers across their respective YouTube channels. The site also features a subscription-based Glam Bag program, which sends subscribers a collectible make-up bag every month with sample beauty products to create a complete look. Phan and the other stylists then use those products in videos that show how to create that look. First established on a previous beta site called myglam.com, the program has fostered a growing community where users share beauty ideas and interact with each other via videos, photos, and comments.

NBCUniversal’s iVillage is offering a “360 sales package” tied to its Guest Editor series. Merging NBCU’s reach online and on television, advertisers that come on board to sponsor the series online will also get the chance to sponsor a collection of custom on-air spots that would run across a variety of NBCUniversal’s television properties. These spots will also promote the iVillage series.
SpotXchange is reporting that more than 50 publishers have signed up to use its First Call service, which lets premium online publishers sell their video inventory through an exchange, since it launched this past February. According to the company, the increase in publishers has led to an average of 40 million additional daily impression opportunities through the SpotXchange video advertising marketplace. First Call is a self-service tool that allows publishers to set a minimum ask price for their content and then throw it over to the SpotXchange marketplace for advertisers to bid on in real time. SpotXchange says that if no bids meet the publisher’s minimum price, the impression opportunity is automatically passed to the publisher’s next buying point. Some key verticals of in-stream video ad inventory that SpotXchange has incorporated into First Call since launch include news, sports, entertainment, music, and casual gaming.
According to mobile video ad company Rhythm NewMedia‘s Q2 Insights Report, mobile video viewing is increasingly happening when consumers are logged into a Wi-Fi network. In fact, Rhythm finds that Wi-Fi has grown 37% in the last year to now account for more than 70% of all video viewing. The company says this shift is in response to carriers offering tiered data plans. Despite these new plans, however, Rhythm projects that video viewing on mobile devices will continue to grow and will account for nearly 60% of all wireless traffic by the end of 2012.Tablets are playing a major role in this growth as Rhythm reports that within its properties, nearly 60% of consumers watch video on their tablets more than once a week. Other highlights from the report include:
- In-stream mobile video ads were included in 92% of mobile ad campaigns run via Rhythm.
- Users were 80% more likely to notice video ads that played before or during video content on mobile devices than in any other context.
- Full-page ads were included in 72% of campaigns during Q2 2012.
When it comes to ad recall, the size of the video screen matters, but other variables such as ad clutter, creative content, and context matter more. This is according to a new whitepaper from YuMe and IPG Media Labs, which used a combination of self-reported surveys, observed video and ad exposure, and eye-tracking and bio-feedback tools to assess the attention, excitement, and ad recall of 147 consumers across four screens — connected TV, linear TV, PCs, and smartphones. According to the study, ad clutter appears to undermine the effectiveness of linear TV (29% successful unaided recall), compared to the successful unaided recall with less ad time of connected TVs (39%), mobile devices (35%), and PCs (40%). The study also found that ad effectiveness varied based on the creativity of the ad, and that the most engaging content attracted the most attention. When it comes to inside the home, YuMe says research shows that the couch is now the ultimate multiscreen environment, while the bed represents the ultimate single-screen environment.
A new BIA/Kelsey forecast says US consumer spending on online deals, including daily deals, instant deals, and flash sales, will explode to $3.6 billion in 2012, a projected 86.9% increase over 2011. After 2012, BIA/Kelsey says growth will taper off, as it expects a 23% growth in deals spending in 2013, followed by “mid-single-digit growth in later years,” all the way to a $5.5 billion total in 2016.

Not that this should come as a surprise, but Apple says pre-orders for the iPhone 5 have broken the record set by its predecessor, the iPhone 4S. In the first 24 hours, the iPhone 5 has received over 2 million pre-orders, which is more than double the 1 million pre-orders the 4S received. In fact, demand is currently exceeding the initial supply. This means a majority of pre-orders will be met when the devices begin to ship this Friday, September 21. The others will have to wait until October to get their hands on the iPhone 5.
Facebook does not plan on holding an F8 conference for app developers this year, per All Things D. The reason for this, according to the report, is that the social networking company has no large changes planned for this year. In previous F8 conferences, Facebook introduced its Connect platform and Open Graph.
A Google+ update if you’re interested: Vic Gundotra, SVP/Engineering at Google, announced yesterday that Google+ currently has more than 400 million users worldwide and 100 million monthly active users (across online and its mobile app).

You probably already know of and have watched/read something on BuzzFeed. The social news site is a goldmine for all types of fun, and often distracting, content. But that’s not why BuzzFeed is today’s Website of the Day. The site is currently highlighting a new feature called “The BuzzFeed Time Machine” that allows users to go back to previous decades and see how the site would have covered stories of the day back during that time period. For example, if you go all the way back to the 20s, you can check out a list covering “10 Crafty Ways to Smuggle Booze.” Or if you’re in the 50s, take a look at how a ridiculous new device called “the television” is ready to change your world. The option is accessible from the top of BuzzFeed’s home page. Give it a whirl, there’s plenty of fun (and funny) stuff.
