NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Ford is breaking into the reality TV business with an 18 episode online series called The Rider Challenge. The eps are linked to Ford’s promotion of its Ford Fiestas on riderchallengeseries, so each team featured in the show will drive Fords, of course. The series is produced by Live Nation Entertainment, and will start Sept. 30, running until November.

…another car company – Chevrolet  has paired up with The Weather Channel to create a new web series called Hero Next Door. The eps, which began yesterday, will showcase 2-3 minute videos of local good Samaritans who help others during severe weather events. Submitted through Facebook, new videos will launch every two weeks on weather.com until the end of the year. Chevy is using the web series to promote its 2014 Silverado truck, and will run ads on The Weather Channel’s site.

CONTENT MEDIA

With Twitter announcing its IPO last Thursday, everyone’s focused on assessing the actual worth of the social site. Bloomberg reported in May that Twitter was worth a mega $10 billion. Still, The New York Times points out that its shares could suffer if Twitter takes advantage of a new law that would allow it to keep its financial data confidential until as late as three weeks before the IPO. MTV’s 2013 Video Music Awards were a big indicator of Twitter’s power, however, to the tune of 305,000 tweets per minute during Miley Cyrus’s August 25th performance.

ABC’s Dancing With The Stars season premiere on Monday became the first TV show to broadcast real-time Facebook convos and social data snap shots throughout the show.

Video news site NowThisNews is releasing the first Instagram video interview ever – with Newark Mayor and U.S. Senate candidate Cory Booker. The site was one of the first to push out news videos on the 15-second platform. Booker’s first segment will be posted by the end of the week.

RESEARCH

Digiday’s roundup on mobile app research has found:

  • Vine videos are tweeted five times per second, and Vine branded videos will be seen four times more than a regular branded video, according 7th Chamber research.
  • Honda’s #WantNewCar Vine campaign reeled in 1,020 new followers and 2,292 mentions on its first day, compared to its previous average of 242 new followers every six months, Socialbakers reported.
  • Instagram video generates twice as many likes, shares and comments than Instagram photos, says Simply Measured.

TECHNOLOGY

The next Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch upgrade is expected to arrive in January 2014, even though the first generation of the gadget doesn’t hit stores until October. Mashable reports that the Galaxy Gear 2 will have longer battery life, a GPS and the ability to connect with more Android devices than just the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone.
In other words: A back-to-back product launch may be Samsung’s way of testing the market before it releases its more advanced smartwatch.
