The FCC is meeting on Sept. 23 to decide the fate of a plan to utilize unused broadcast spectrum for wireless broadband services and signs are pointing to the commission approving the scheme. (One worry is that urban area hotspots are already overloaded.) If the deal is approved, chip and device makers must come up with networking gear, smartphones and other communications devices that can switch frequencies between standard Wi-Fi and so called “Super WiFi.” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski visited Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, WA earlier this year where the company is testing a campus-wide white-space Wi-Fi broadband service.
Bravo is hosting another “Talk Bubble” event for the finale of Top Chef D.C. on Wed. night at 10 pm., live from the show’s wrap party at Colicchio’s Craft restaurant in New York City. Chime in from Bravo.com or via the Bravo Now iPhone or iPad app.
The daily printed edition of The Hollywood Reporter will go by the wayside beginning in October, replaced by a glossy weekly edition aimed at “influencers,” overseen by new Editorial Director Janice Min and Richard Beckman, CEO of THR parent company, e5 Global Media. The hope is to quadruple circulation (currently believed to be under 50,000) within three years. Current subscribers will still receive daily missives via PDF.

Codenamed Project Devil, the display ads will include clickable video, slide shows and access to social networking feeds including Facebook and Twitter in a bet to get audiences to spend more time on the ads.

Free mobile Q&A service ChaCha is looking to simplify things for studios and retailers, launching a Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) service that will support video and rich media, including movie trailers and images such as coupons and logos. The service can be used to deliver rich media content to any phone equipped with MMS capabilities, an estimated footprint of over 275 million handsets.

If current trends continue, Facebook – currently growing at a rate 48.3% per month – will be second only to Google within the year. Other Q2 findings include:
- Pure-play web media properties continue to show strong growth with nearly 300 million video streams in Q2, while video streams also surged in the newspaper vertical, which enjoyed a massive surge after the BP oil spill by more than 65% to almost 225 million streams between Q1 and Q2
