Google unveiled a slew of new content partners including Netflix, HBO, Turner, Amazon, CBNC, NBA, VEVO and blip.tv to provide content for its Google TV service, a last 10-feet platform set to launch later this month via a Logitech set-top box and later on integrated HDTVs and Blu-ray players from Sony. Turner will be tailoring its content from TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and AdultSwim. Amazon, HBO and Netflix will provide access to their Video on Demand and Watch Instantly libraries. Producers such as CNBC will create apps that stream “Real-Time” stock info. and business news. Applications will include IMDB-powered search, web browsing, apps from Google’s upcoming web store, the ability to use an Android phone as a remote and integrated DVR functionality.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
MTV’s LGBT network Logo is partnering with location-based social networking service foursquare to promote its new docu-reality series about New York’s gay elite. Starting this week, visitors to foursquare’s Logo page can unlock “The A-List: New York” badges by visiting locations frequented by the show’s “A-Listers.”
 
Shout! Factory has signed a multi-year deal with Rainmaker Entertainment (formerly Mainframe) to bring popular 90’s CGI animation TV series ReBoot to the home entertainment and digital spaces in the U.S.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Well known to music-loving Angelinos, former KCRW music director Nic Harcourt is managing a new ad supported music site from pop culture publisher BuzzMedia called Live Buzz. The site features news, interviews and features and streams exclusive live performances of bands as they make their way through L.A. The sessions, many recorded at the famed Village Recorder studio off Santa Monica Blvd., will include bands handpicked by Nic himself including My Morning Jacket, Sean Lennon, David Gray, Corinne Bailey Rae and Delta Spirit.
 
Meredith Integrated Marketing has launched a new weekly comedic online video series “You Gotta LOL” for client Kraft Foods starring comedian Anita Renfroe. Each episode will feature stand-up routines built around specific Kraft products including Oreo Cookies and Maxwell House International Coffee.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The online ad industry’s most prominent trade groups have teamed up to create a detailed self-regulatory plan to help stave off regulation and enable users to gain more control of how their data is collected by online ad firms. The initiative includes use of an icon (an “i” with a triangle around it) that marketers will be encouraged to place near their ads that will explain how the targeted ad was chosen, as well as offer the ability to opt out of behavioral tracking programs. A total of 5,000 companies are represented by the participating groups, including the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). The trade groups have also teamed up with New York start-up Better Advertising to monitor the ads online and report on the effectiveness of the program.
 
Independent ad exchange provider AdBrite has introduced a video pre-roll unit, touting advanced targeting capabilities and 100% transparency. The system can accommodate up to 30 sec. pre-rolls with full engagement metrics and CPM prices staring at $6/1,000 impressions.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
FremantleMedia announced it has taken a controlling 60% stake in @radical.media, a global transmedia firm that creates advertising and branded entertainment content for TV, feature films, commercials, music programming, live events, digital content, graphic and interactive design and other media. The two companies have worked together since 2008 though Fremantle’s FME division on series such as Iconoclasts for Sundance Channel.
 
In lieu of the text message generation, global accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers announced it is officially shortening its name to PwC.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
America’s appetite for entertainment related gadgets and gear is showing no signs of abating according to Nielsen‘s latest Home Technology survey of some 1,372 households. Viewing screens are getting bigger and better and DVRs and Wi-Fi are seen as must have. Satellite radio and PDA’s, on the other hand, are very much on the wane.

  • HDTV sets have increased 26.9% and LCD flat screens are up 48.2% from Q3 2008 to Q2 2010
  • Currently, 85.3% of Americans have some kind of internet access either through home and/or work, with in-home Wi-Fi increasing 8.2% y/y and 24% over eight quarters
  • DVR adoption increased 14.5% from Q1 2010 to Q2 2010
  • Almost half (46%) of all U.S. homes now have at least one MP3 Player, with Apple’s iPod capturing 63% of all MP3 Player-owning households
  • 3.6% of U.S. homes now own an iPad

 
Consumer packaged goods rely more than ever on search marketing to grow market share and build loyalty but the influence of paid search is declining, according to a new survey from AdGooroo and Hitwise. The Top Ten CPG Websites receive a quarter of their traffic from search engines, more than any other source, with most top 10 CPG sites receiving more than 80% of their search traffic from organic search or search engine optimization rather than paid search. However 8 of the top 10 CPG sites maintain at least 50% coverage on Google for their paid search keywords and all top 10 CPG websites maintain an average position of three or better on Google.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
As had been rumored, Toshiba announced plans to launch a line of 3D TVs in Japan in Dec. that require no glasses. The sets, which start at a handsome $1,400 for the 12-inch model and $2,400 for a 20-inch set, rely on a thin sheet of lenses placed on the front of the display that sends beams of light to 9 different points on the screen. One drawback is that viewers must sit in certain “sweet spots” to enjoy the 3D effect.
 
Virgin Mobile continues to expand options for folks who don’t like to sign wireless contracts, introducing its first prepaid handset based on Google’s Android smartphone OS. The Samsung Intercept, featuring a 3.2-inch touchscreen and a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, will come preloaded with several popular apps and sell with service options of $25, $40 and $60/month.
 
Thumbplay Media
has created a new subscription-based WWE Magazine mobile app featuring breaking news, features, galleries and interactive activities. The app, out now for the iPhone and launching later this month for Android and BlackBerry, will refresh its content daily for the price of $2.99/mo.
 
Popular badass quote-generating iPhone app iSamJackson has finally been adopted by Heatwave Interactive for Android with 99 cent “clean” and “+17” version.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Yahoo’s now former VP of Media James Pitaro has landed at the Disney Interactive Media Group to serve as Co-President with John Pleasants, who will also continue on as CEO of social game publisher Playdom, acquired by Disney earlier this year. Jimmy will be based in Burbank while John will remain in the Bay area.
 
Microblogging start-up Twitter announced that COO Dick Costolo is switching hats to take over as CEO as the company continues to try and figure out a solid monetization strategy. Dick came to Twitter from a Google a year ago to head up advertising initiatives. Current CEO Evan Williams says he stepping down to focus on product strategy.
 
Former Yahoo CMO and just-departed EVP of Nintendo U.S., Cammie Dunaway, has been tapped for the newly created role of U.S. President and Global Chief Marketing Officer for kid-themed virtual world entertainment firm KidZania. She will open a new office in San Jose, CA.
 
Former CEO of mobile video ad network Transpera Greg Ballard has been named SVP/Digital Games, for Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with oversight of WB’s Turbine MMOG division Turbine. He will be based in Burbank, CA and report to both Thomas Gewecke, President, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
 
TouchTunes Interactive Networks has tapped David Lane to serve as VP/Business Development reporting to President and CEO Charles Goldstuck in New York, NY. David’s former post was VP/Digital Media for CBS Outdoor.

Entertainment and media-focused social media dashboard Trendrr is unveiling a new premium service this morning (with a free 14-day trial) that adds layers of new real-time behavioral intel from the front lines of blogs, search, video sites and social networking. Factoring in activity from sources such as Facebook Like, Foursquare, Gowalla, Collecta and Klout, the revamped Trendrr will include a location-specific dashboard that allows networks, studios and publishers to see where in the U.S. activity is spiking and identify who on Twitter or other services is moving the needle for their brand. Trendrr’s designers at digital media agency Wireset say the ability to take the pulse of how audiences are reacting to a show, brand or issue and identify who the key influencers are – the job of the newly christened “Chief Listening Officer” – is step one in figuring out how to market or position a product. Trendrr and Wiredset CEO Mark Ghuneim already sees marketers’ approaches evolving as more data becomes available to them. One focus is how to derive value from “swarm behavior,” around events, special offers or hot topics. Another is how to utilize location-based services to attract a wider swath of customers. “(foursquare’s) barrister badge at Starbucks is nice but the real way to unlock value is to offer real world rewards,” said Mr. Ghuneim. “Otherwise you see a fall off in behaviors.”
