Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Together again, School of Rock co-stars Jack Black and Miranda Cosgrove star in a new hour-long iCarly TV movie, iStart a Fan War, premiering on Nickelodeon, Friday, November 19 at 8p.  The special features Black as “Aspartamay,” Spencer’s online game nemesis that challenges him to a “lyrical duel” in the Comic-Con inspired special.  Promotional clips for iStart a Fan War are currently available on Nick.com and Nick’s wireless partners.  The TV movie will also simulcast on Nick Mobile.  Following its premiere IStart a Fan War will be available for purchase in HD on iTunes, Amazon.com, Son Playstation and Xbox.  Finally, from Monday, November15, iCarly.com ( www.icarly.com ) will feature a new game, Tower of Defense, which is based on the fictional online video game featured in the movie.  Jack Black stars in Fox’s new feature film adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, which opens wide December 22, 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Hub, the new kid/family channel and joint venture between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, has entered into a partnership with generationOn, a youth-centric service group, and division of Points of Light Institute, that encourages kids to get involved and make their mark on the world.  Together The Hub and generationOn will create public service announcements supporting community service, which will air on The Hub, and coordinate an annual community service-focused event.  Additionally, hubworld.com will feature advertising support and links between hubworld.com ( www.hubworld.com ) and generationOn.org ( www.generationOn.org ) that will also encourage young people to volunteer and log their hours online to ear virtual rewards.

Barnes & Noble launches its Nook Kids collection for young readers, which will offer some 12,000 digital chapter books at NookKids.com ( www.nookkids.com ), per WSJ.  About 100 picture books will be added in November, and 30 enhanced picture books will join the site between the end of 2010 and early 2011.  The titles are available at BarnesandNoble.com, and will be available through the Nook Kids app for Apple products.  According to the report Barnes & Noble has entered into deals with 15 kid’s publishers to produce enhanced digital book editions.  Further information should be available this week when a new Nook device is introduced, which might feature a color and interactive abilities.

Speakaboos, a digital publisher of kid-targeted stories narrated by celebrities, launches the kid’s website, Speakaboos.com ( www.speakaboos.com ).  At launch the site features 140+ storybook videos, including titles like Aladdin, Cinderella, and Humpty Dumpty, read by stars such as Kevin Bacon, Kelly Rip and Nick Cannon. Each video also features activities for kids and parents that are designed to help keep kids engaged, including lesson plans, flashcards, and games.  Speakaboos also recently released the iPhone app, Stories2Go.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Senario introduces the new Zibits mini remote control robots iPhone game, Zibits Rush ($.99).  Created by Senario and India’s ChaYoWo Games, the new game app feature four different futuristic worlds and various challenges.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products UK inks a multi territory agreement with Aegis Vision for a line of DC Comics branded mobile phone covers.  The line debuts with Superman skins for the iPhone 4 and Blackberry.  Aegis Vision’s line will be available exclusively at 02 Stores in the UK this holiday season, with product set to be showcased on the 02 website beginning November 2010.  Under the deal, Aegis Vision has the rights to distribute products in the UK and Ireland, Germany and Austria, Turkey, Nordic, Greece and Cyprus and South Africa.

Sun Properties completes a range of licensing deals for Angel Cat Sugar, the cat character created by Yuko Shimizu, who also created Hello Kitty.  New Angel Cat Sugar licensing partners include:

  • Rotsterm GmbH (confectionary) for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (GAS), Poland and Czech Republic
  • Idenses (curtains) for GAS, Benelux, France, Spain and Great Britain
  • Pentra (bags, gifts, stationery) for Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia
  • Amscan International (foil balloons) for GAS, Iberia, Benelux, Nordics, Italy, France, UK/Ireland

Stone America Licensing is named as the exclusive licensing agent by Technical Knockout Inc. (TKO), a designer/producer of fitness, strength and boxing equipment.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Apartment 11 Productions names Alberta Nokes as its Head of Development.  Her programming and production background runs the gamut from developing, writing and producing to financing, executive producing and commissioning.  Most recently Nokes was VP/Marketing and Communications, Vision TV.  Nokes previously served as VP/Development, Frantic Films, Executive Producer and Head of Development, Associated Producers Limited, Executive in Charge of Production, History Television to name a few.  Known for its fiction and fact based programming for adults and kids, Apartment 11 Productions’ kid-targeted properties include Prank Patrol and In Real Life.

Sesame Workshop promotes Anita Stewart to SVP/Corporate Partnerships.  She will report to Myung Kang-Huneke, Chief of Staff.  In her new role, Stewart will focus on developing new multimedia, multinational corporate partnerships using all media (e.g. mobile, digital platforms),to deliver educational content to kids and families worldwide.  Stewart, who joined the workshop in 2003, continues to be responsible for developing and making strategic corporate partnerships and sponsorship programs for Sesame Street and The Electric Company in the US, as well as for co-productions worldwide.  Additionally, she oversees corporate funding for US and international community outreach partnerships, such as Healthy Habits for Life.  Stewart previously toiled for PBS as National Marketing and Sales Director/Sponsorship Group.  She has also held marketing and promotional positions at MobileComm, Texaco, and N.W. Ayer & Partners.
