Following its price hike coupled with its now-we’re-Qwikster-now-we’re-not public relations fiasco, Netflix lost 800,000 subscribers in the third quarter, the company reported yesterday at the close of markets. The company finished the quarter ending Sept. 30 with 23.8 million subscribers, down from 24.6 million the quarter before. The most telling news to come from the company is that it expects more sub losses in the fourth quarter and is forecasting it will end the year with 20 million to 21.5 million streaming customers and a little less than 11.3 million DVD-only customers, down from 21.5 million streaming-only subscribers and just under 14 million DVD-only customers, with most customers having a mix of both, for the third quarter. The stock fell on the news. Revenues rose though to $822 million, from a predicted $811 million. Revenue and profits for fourth quarter will be lower than expected, the company warned. Also, Netflix announced it would expand streaming to the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2012. Netflix members there will be able to watch movies and TV shows available for instant viewing at that time, with pricing details to come closer to launch. Netflix said it currently offers streaming to more than 43 countries.
BBC Worldwide struck a deal with iTunes to offer all episodes of the British version of The Office. The episodes are available to purchase and download in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, France and Germany. Previously, the comedy’s multiplatform distribution has only been via DVD. BBC Worldwide said it has sold nearly 4 million copies on DVD worldwide.
Showtime Licensing & Merchandising rolled out a Dexter companion site at BuyThisTreasure.com to sell products related to the show, such as an ice truck killer paperweight and thumb drives encased in fake thumbs. The URL is a nod to the auction site buythistreasure.com used in the show’s storyline.
PBS premiered the first episode of its four-part series NOVA’s “The Fabric of the Cosmos” exclusively on its iPad, iPhone and iTouch app, a full week before the on-air broadcast Nov. 2. The series dives into the frontiers of physics, space, time and the universe. Each episode will also be streamed on video.pbs.org, timed to the national broadcast.
Online streaming service Acorn TV has added British series Upstairs, Downstairs to its roster of British mysteries and dramas available for U.S. audiences. The show has won seven Emmys, two BAFTAs, a Golden Globe and Peabody.
Educational and training platform Grovo.com launched a groups offering to let friends, family and coworkers to collaborate. The newest version of the Grovo service also enables more personalized coursework via a recommendation engine, the company said.
Streamworks delivered about 181,000 concurrent views for the Major League Gaming tournament held October 14-16 in Orlando, breaking a record for the streaming events for MLG, it said.
Online shopping company OpenSky scored some serious venture capital with a $30 million round of funding from Providence Equity Partners and participation from existing investors, Highland Capital Partners, Canaan Partners and The Raine Group. OpenSky lets users create their own catalog of products by following different experts on the site to create a personalized shopping experience. OpenSky said since its April launch it has grown 50% month over month and now counts more than 600,000 registered users who have more than 3 million connections, or follows.

Personalized online video ads can boost purchase intent by 37% and double brand favorability, according to an eMarketer report citing data from online video provider Eyeview. Personalized ads can also increase brand loyalty by 73%, the study said.
Even a crew of debating Republican presidential hopefuls can’t surpass the cast of Jersey Shore in social buzz. The reality show topped social buzz rankings yet again for the week ending Oct. 23, followed by the Republican presidential debate and Spongebob Squarepants, according to tracking service SocialGuide.
Ah, you’re finally someone when you’re hacked. As QR codes rise in popularity, cybercriminals are targeting them for viruses and scams, according to a Mobile Marketer report. The article said Internet security firm Kapersky Labs has detected malicious Web sites containing QR codes for mobile apps and expects more to appear as QR codes continue to rise in use by brands and mobile marketers.
Musical theater lovers rejoice. Dramatic rights licensing agency Music Theatre International launched a musical theatre app for the iPhone and iPad with research and reference info on more than 300 musicals including Annie, The Music Man, Rent, West Side Story, Les Miserables, Avenue Q and Legally Blonde: The Musical. Users can search and browse titles for show information and song samples.
