A hopeful Microsoft and U.S. partners AT&T and T-Mobile unveiled a brand new line-up of smartphones on Monday built to run on the completely revamped Windows 7 mobile operating system. (The system does not support CDMA, so Verizon and Sprint will not launch Windows 7 phones initially.) The Zune-inspired user interface replaces icons with customizable “live tiles” and large text featuring content that is automatically updated in real-time. Integration with AT&T’s U-verse TV will enable Windows 7 customers to download and watch TV shows on the go. And Microsoft has finally made a valiant effort to integrate its many fiefdoms: Zune Pass music subscribers will be able to listen to tunes directly from their phones and Xbox Live users will be able to share content between their phones and consoles. More than 60 carriers in 30 countries will begin selling Windows 7 phones this fall. With Apple selling 8.4 million iPhones last quarter and Google counting 200k Android phones being activated each day, the company has its work cut out.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
AT&T’s U-verse TV also completed an integration with Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 gaming console, charging customers $99 to allow Xbox users to view programming though their broadband-enabled box. The feature, first announced in Jan. 2007, goes live on Oct. 15.
 
BoomGen Studios, a production partner in Disney’s Prince of Persia, acquired exclusive global multimedia rights to Hyperworks Entertainment’s Rostam’s Comics properties, based on The Shahnameh – the Persian Book of Kings. The company is planning a line of comic books, digital motion comics, mobile apps and film and video games based on the epic comic adaptations.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The NYTimes.com is unveiling a new video recommendation service powered by local start-up Taboola. The algorithmic technology recommends “other videos you might like” from the Times archive based on relevance and viewing habits of other users below and at the end of the video. The company says click-through rates in a trial of the feature increased 250% from previous additional offerings.
 
Revision3 launched a new integration bringing editorial content from gaming news web site Destructoid.com. Destructoid features Jonathan Holmes and Tara Long offering up the latest breaking news from the gaming world, with new episodes premiering every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
A new start-up called AdKeeper, founded by former About.com CEO Scott Kurnit, presents ads that viewers are allowed to bookmark and save for later. The service will place a “K” button onto online ads that will let consumers “Keep” the ad, and save it for later viewing, creating a new measure of effectiveness for ad engagement. AdKeeper, offering its services for free for the first 6 months, is launching with over 20 brands including McDonalds, Pepsi, Warner Bros and JetBlue.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Bad news, but nothing too surprising here. Just like the initial iPhone didn’t support AT&T’s nascent 3G network, the CMDA version of the iPhone 4 due out for Verizon in January won’t support Verizon’s 4G LTE network. (Apple says its would prefer to wait until upgrades are complete nationwide, but IMHO it also never misses the opportunity to get early adopters to upgrade.) A pure LTE version of the phone may not be available until 2012 to give carriers and application developers around the world enough time to perfect upgrades and standards, reports TechCrunch.
 
The Justice Dept. and the FCC may ask that Comcast face arbitration in carriage disputes with programmers as a condition of its proposed merger with NBC, per Bloomberg.
 
Broadband-based TV programming service Sezmi stuck a deal with Malaysian ISP YTL Communications to launch it first service overseas. Sezmi will supply content through existing partnerships for live TV, video-on-demand and internet availability. A hybrid broadband and mobile HD entertainment/education/internet service is scheduled to roll out across Malaysia by the end of 2011.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Web video has grown beyond the fad stage to offer engagement levels that surpass traditional TV, according to a new study conducted by Next New Networks and YouTube with researcher Frank N. Magid Associates. Online video viewers, 60% of whom watch weekly and 58% of whom tune in at various times each week, describe their shows as original, having fewer boundaries and being adaptable to individual viewing schedules. Online viewers tend to skew younger – 18-34 year old Web original viewers constituted 65% of the national sample, 73% of the YouTube sample, and 90% of Next New Networks’ sample – and they tend to engage in social behaviors, with 37% posting what they watch to Facebook or MySpace and another 10% sharing via Twitter.
 
DVR maker Tivo issued a challenge to TV advertisers, asking them to “trade in” the value of their lowest-performing prime-time 30-second TV spots to use those funds to buy 30 days of exposure on Tivo. As part of the offer the company will use its Stop||Watch rating service to determine which of an advertiser’s spots is the most-avoided by viewers using DVRs
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Microsoft showed off a total of 9 new phones due out in time for the holidays that will be based on the new Windows 7 OS. The following handsets, all running on the Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm, will be available in the U.S. from Nov.:

  • AT&T will release the HTC Surround, the Samsung Focus and the LG Quantum
  • T-Mobile will debut the HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro

 
ESPN is bundling 6 months of digital issues of ESPN the Magazine for the publication’s $10 iPad app, which includes a subscription to ESPNInsider.com. Also look for exclusive original videos, interviews and photography archived from ABC’s Wide World of Sports, ESPN’s E:60 and Outside the Lines.
 
CBSSports.com announced the launch of 190 free mobile apps for 95 NCAA colleges and universities on Android and BlackBerry smartphones. Each GameTracker app provides coverage of 14 different sports directly from 95 of the top NCAA Division I schools including play-by-play details, schedules, stats, standings and breaking news.

Local TV and newspaper sites would do well to tap into the huge viral potential of localized couponing services that offer deals to communities of users and rely on consumers themselves to spread the word for them via social networking sites. Local media group Media General has struck a deal with Groupon to enable newspapers and stations to offer exclusive daily advertiser deals under the company’s local media brand names, identified with a “powered by Groupon” moniker. The Richmond Times-Dispatch became the first platform to offer the service as the Richmond Daily Deal with week, offering smoothies at 57% off. Media General, which also operates the national shopping site Dealtaker.com, plans to launch the service in 6 additional markets by the end of the year.
