Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/11/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, October 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Netflix changed course in a big way with the news that it won’t split its company in two. After weeks of falling stock prices, Netflix nixed its unpopular plan to break up its streaming and DVD businesses into two separates lines with two separate Web sites and will instead maintain both its DVD and streaming businesses at Netflix.com The company halted the DVD-only site it had been calling Qwikster. In a blog post Netflix said: “It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs. This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster. While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.” The company had enjoyed meteoric growth in the last few years, defying Wall Street expectations, but its stock priced had slipped 60% since July as a result of the price change and then the confusion decision over Qwikster.

iVillage launched its first celebrity blog series called CelebVillage that features high-profile female Hollywood stars serving as the “blogger-in-residence” for a one-month period. Once a week, they’ll share personal stories on the iVillage site starting with actress Denise Richards whose columns are online now. On deck are Alanis Morissette and Ricki Lake.

In the ongoing process to maybe, probably, but maybe not definitely find Hulu a new owner, the site’s financial advisers are now comparing the offers from the bidding companies. While Google, Dish Network, and Amazon.com Inc. are still in play, Yahoo! has bowed out of the competition, reports The Wall Street Journal.

As the show gears up for its second season, AMC‘s The Walking Dead has come out with six webisodes available on amctv.com that focus on the back story of a popular zombie known as “Bicycle Girl” from season one. Directed by a co-exec producer on the show and produced by Generate, the series will document a woman’s struggle against, and eventual demise to, becoming a zombie.

Speaking of the iPhone, video streaming site Dailymotion announced it has partnered with the Original iPhone Film Festival to showcase submitted films from festival participants to its mobile viewers. The conceit of the festival is simple: shoot a short film using an Apple iOS device; submit it in one of four categories: fiction, non-fiction, brand films and music videos; win Apple products. In early November, Dailymotion will also display the category winners and allow viewers to vote for the Grand Prize Film.

To promote her new web series Dragon Age: Redemption, GigaOm reports that actress Felicia Day will make appearances in the Google+ Hangouts of her fans today. She will publish a post on her profile at 10 a.m. PST requesting links to Hangouts, and will then start showing up to as many Hangouts as she can within three-hour window to answer questions and pose for photos.

Online video viewers are watching less TV than they used to, according to a study of blip.tv viewer habits conducted by Dynamic Logic. The report found that Internet video viewers watch 9% less cable TV than they did six months ago, and 26% more Web video. They also spend 19% more time watching video on mobile devices and 18% more time watching on game consoles than they did six months ago. About one-third of blip.tv viewers said they prefer banner ads among online ad forms, with pre-rolls a second choice. The study found the average viewer of a web series is 33 years old, college educated (60%) and almost evenly divided between men (51%) and women (49%).

In advance of a possible IPO that could come near the end of 2012, Facebook has been actively courting seven- and eight-figure ad deals with major marketers, according to AdAge Digital. On that end, Facebook is offering sneak previews of new features and ad products it is testing to some advertisers who have committed to long-term deals. Furthermore, last week the social media giant unveiled a premium ad offering that links a user’s friends’ comments and “likes” to branded content and then delivers it in a premium ad slot, along with an “Insights” platform created to provide better measurement.

Jersey Shore continues to pull in the social buzz department, scoring the most online chatter of any show last week, placing it ahead of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants and Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event on E! in uniques and comments for the week ending October 3, according to Social Guide.

Given the rapid growth in Smartphone usage, eMarketer expects about 50% of mobile users will make a mobile purchase this holiday season, citing data from PayPal and Ipsos. That’s up from about 17% of shoppers last year who had said they intended to buy something for the holidays using their phone to handle the transaction. Tablet users also plan to use their devices for holiday shopping with about 45% saying they’ll start shopping before Thanksgiving kicks off the official holiday buying season.

The adoption of Smartphones and tablets has led to a massive increase in consumption of digital media, according to a new report from comScore that digs into cross-platform media usage. The report found that non-computer Web traffic was nearly 7% in August, with two-thirds coming from mobile phones. The study also found that the mobile media user population grew 19% last year to half of the U.S. mobile population, or more than 116 million people. Also, iPads are driving more Web traffic than iPhones and nearly half of tablet users had made a purchase on their tablet device.

Facebook has purchased Friend.ly, a social Q&A site that helps users learn more about their friends and meet people. In a blog post yesterday, the Friend.ly team stated that while it will continue to operate as an independent service, it will also work on new projects at Facebook.

Twitter analytics firm SocialGrapple, and its sole developer and leader Andrey Petrov, has been acquired by Google, reports TechCrunch. The social graphs service allows you to monitor followers, compare types of followers, monitor brand mentions and more and then serves you the information via visual graphs, interactive charts and e-mail reports. For now, the startup is shutting down service, while there are no confirmed indications to the capacity in which Petrov’s service will be used at Google.

Don’t expect a download-only console from Sony anytime soon. The company told the publication Edge that it doesn’t have plans to offer a download version of its console, in part because download speeds aren’t high enough in general to support the bandwidth needed for such an offering.

Apple’s newest iPhone, the iPhone 4S that was introduced last week, is on pace to be its most popular ever based on pre-orders. The company said pre-orders topped 1 million, more than the 600,000 pre-orders logged by the iPhone 4 on its first day for sale.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Discovery hired Jean-Briac (JB) Perrette as its new Chief Digital Officer. He’ll start next week after serving most recently in a high-profile post at NBC as President, Digital and Affiliate Distribution and Content Distribution Strategy for NBCUniversal. At NBC he oversaw the company’s North American distribution of TV and films on digital platforms and played a key role in developing Hulu. At Discovery, he’ll head a team of more than 300 employees and guide the company’s digital strategy across its Web sites as well as other digital distribution opportunities. He will be based in New York.

Ad exchange adBrite named Rick Cotton as its Chief Revenue Officer. He joins from Monster, where he served as Senior VP and he has also worked with CBS and Lycos. His focus at adBrite will be on growing the adoption of the company’s real-time tools for publishers.

Tap.me, a startup that is building an ad network with the intention of monetizing games, has found its new CEO in Matt Spiegel, according to AllThingsD. Spiegel starts his new post immediately for the company that is currently focused on mobile apps, but has intentions to expand to other gaming platforms, such as Facebook, in the future. Tap.me allows game developers to pick something within a game that it will allow to be sponsored, a playable action like a new skill or level, and then provides advertisers who are willing to sponsor the item/action.
