Consolidation in the world of online video continues as market leading video ad network Tremor Media has acquired ScanScout in a deal that creates a powerhouse of scale and reach. Tremor Media will roll ScanScout’s operations and ad units in under its own banner. The merger, the terms of which were not disclosed, will bring more brand advertisers to the medium by enabling brands to accomplish TV campaign-style objectives in terms of being able to reach specific audiences and dayparts, according Tremor CEO Bill Day, with the merged network capable of reaching over 100 million viewers. Only Hulu serves more ads than a combined Tremor/ScanScout, which served a total of 667 million combined in Sept., according to ComScore – compared to 794 million for Hulu.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

More than half of U.S. TV homes (56%) now own HDTV sets making the adoption one of the quickest roll-outs of a new technology in the last 20 years, according to Nielsen. However viewing of HD content lags far behind viewing of standard def fare, with only 13% of total day viewing and 19% of broadcast TV viewing done in HD. Why the disconnect? Some 44% of homes either do not have an HD set or an HD service. Most HD homes have at least one non-HD set where about 1/3 of programming is viewed (the cable company charges extra for each HD tuner, after all.) And even on HD sets, some 20% of viewing is through non-HD feeds with many viewers giving up trying to find HD feeds at the far end of the dial. HD consumption varies by programming genre and demo, with sports the most likely genre to be watched in HD and young adults 18-24 the most likely to tune into HD feeds. Kids, who are not likely to have HD tuners in their bedrooms, are least likely to watch HD fare.

Transaction- Video-on-Demand (T-VOD), encompassing online TV rentals, pay-TV VOD rentals and pay-per-view, is projected to reach $10 billion in revenue by 2014 as US TV download revenue will more than triple between 2010 and 2014, according to a new In-Stat report. T-VOD content will not replace linear TV subscriptions, but they will put stress on current pay TV models. Online a la carte rental of TV episodes will also directly compete with online subscription TV services such as Hulu Plus and Netflix, according to In-Stat, and may negatively impact the use of TV Everywhere services.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Popular location-based service Loopt launched a free app for the new Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform, enabling friends to pull up social maps of where their friends are and “ping” them to see if they want to get together.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

TV Guide Digital
has tapped longtime Time, Inc. veteran Marcella Regniault as VP/Business Operations and promoted TVGuide.com executive David Singer to VP/Product Development. Both will be based in New York and report to Christy Tanner, SVP & GM, TV Guide Digital.

San Antonio, TX-based One Source Networks hired former Telstra International marketer Gina Nomellini as Chief Marketing Officer, effective November 1, 2010.

Frank Cooper, Pepsi’s Chief Consumer Engagement Officer and CMO sparking beverages, has joined augmented reality gaming company Ogmento‘s Board of Directors.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Netscape founder Marc Andreessen is putting his eggs in another browser start-up. This time, it’s all about social networking. RockMelt (you have to connect your Facebook account with the site to receive an invitation) integrates with your online networks by actually showing which of your Facebook or Twitter friends are currently online in a bar on the left. A handy “share” button makes it easy to share links, videos and pages as you surf the web and users can update their status or keep tabs on their friends’ activities right from the browser window. A social web browser is not an entirely new idea – Flock introduced the concept more than 3 years ago to a loyal but decidedly niche following. And history tells us that most computer users just use what their computer came installed with. But RockMelt has this going for it – it’s the first new browser launched since Facebook changed the way the mainstream communicates online.

Correction : A&E’s new History Here Windows Phone 7 app actually costs $2.99 to download and it references 7,000 locations upon launch.
