On the heels of its recently-announced and broad-reaching new content development program with both independent programmers and celebrities, YouTube has now also struck a deal with Disney Interactive to provide online video programming geared for Disney audiences starting early next year. The deal calls for the two partners to produce “co-branded video destinations” on both Disney.com and YouTube.com with family-friendly programming. The first series is slated for a February launch with Web show based on a Disney mobile game. The deal is noteworthy as the latest move by YouTube to bolster its offerings with new fare from Hollywood studios. The New York Times first reported the deal and said the two companies will spend $10 million to $15 million on the original videos.
Twitter paired up with technology platform Mass Relevance in a deal slated to help media and brands drive revenue from tweets. Mass Relevance will curate officially licensed Twitter content and re-syndicate it, the companies said. Twitter said the content partners can then make money on those tweets and content via sponsorships or direct response. Twitter said that under the deal, Mass Relevance gains access to the so-called “Twitter Firehose” and will be curating more than 250 million tweets each day.
Netflix struck a new multi-year deal with MGM that will give Netflix the exclusive subscription streaming rights in the UK and Ireland for most first-run feature films from MGM, the companies said. The deal kicks in early 2012 when Netflix launches its service in the UK and Ireland. The MGM titles will be available for instant viewing in the pay TV window and include films such as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and Zookeeper.
CBS Sports said its free online broadcast of the LSU-Alabama game Saturday night lured 214,560 unique viewers to the Web site and mobile viewing. The audience breakdown was about 171,648 viewers on the CBSSports.com website, and another 42,912 viewers via mobile. CBS said it believes it set a record for the largest audience to watch a football game through digital platforms, though the numbers are much smaller than the million-plus fans who watched one of the first round college basketball games in the 2010 championship.
The Detroit Lions inked a partnership with social media marketing platform Social Toaster to introduce an online brand advocate program called Lions Pride. The program is designed to let the team share Web content directly with these brand advocates and, by extension, their friends on social networks. Since the October 19 launch, more than 3000 fans have joined the effort. The team estimates it can potentially reach more than one million people via the fans signed up to date.

Toyota has teamed with Yahoo to run rich media ads for Yahoo Fantasy Football on iPads, iPhones and Android devices, according to an article in Mobile Marketer. The ads offer help with Fantasy Football picks and a link in the ads takes users to the Toyota site.
The Interactive Ad Bureau said that ad technology firms ADTECH, MediaMind, PointRoll and VINDICO have joined DoubleClick in a pledge to adopt the IAB Impression Exchange Solution by middle of 2012, which can help streamline digital advertising by quickly detecting and resolving discrepancies in counting impressions and clicks. The IAB also said it has updated its rich media creative guidelines for the first time since 2008 to add new display formats, and improve specifications on video play, rich media and other aspects of online advertising.
About 44% percent of TV homes in the United States now have a DVR, said Leichtman Research Group. About one-third of those homes have more than one DVR. The research firm also found that 73% of all digital cable customers have used VOD, with 87% having done so in the last month.
The use of connected devices for video consumption is rising fast, according to a new report from IMS Research predicting that by 2016 connected CE devices will account for 27% of all over-the-top video transactions, up from 6% last year. The growth is coming from rapid increases in use of streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. The firm forecasts that by the end of 2016, more than 133 million TV homes worldwide will access over-the-top content using a pay TV set-top box.
Posts with shorter text and no punctuation drove the most engagement for brands on social platforms, said social media platform company Vitrue in reporting on engagement trends it’s seen for clients on Facebook and Twitter. Shorter posts receive more likes and comments, and engagement is highest on Fridays on mobile phones.
In an effort to refine its data for audience measurement, WPP’s measurement arm Kantar Media and parent holding company Group M said they’ll work to integrate more data to produce a better understanding of consumer behavior from viewing ads to buying goods. That includes licensing data from Kantar Media’s DIRECTView service on the behavior of audiences watching Hispanic programming and then marrying that with shopping data to provide a deeper insight into media consumption and purchase habits of Hispanic audiences.
Video technology firm Encoding.com inked a deal with LA public radio station KCRW to use the company’s Vid.ly encoding tools to power music videos for the station’s Music Mine iPad app. Encoding.com handles transcoding, device detection and delivery of videos.
