Hoping to carve out a niche where rivals Apple and Google have failed, Microsoft is currently in talks with media giants to license TV network content for a planned pay TV subscription service delivered through the Xbox 360 and/or other devices, according to Bloomberg. Options being discussed include using the Xbox to authenticate cable TV subscribers, as is currently done online via various TV Everywhere initiatives. Microsoft, which is working on a Hulu Plus integration for early 2011 and has added the linear ESPN to its Xbox Live service earlier this year, is also interested in offering individual channels a la carte on the service such as premium offerings HBO and Showtime.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBC Local Media today announced a new program dubbed “The 20” to offer local bloggers with prominent followings on Twitter access to NBC’s local media platforms. The chosen Twitter users will be featured on broadcast in on-air segments and packages, and across NBC’s other local media properties, including its digital Nonstop television channels and hyperlocal city websites. The initiative will launch in Jan. in Washington, DC, New York, and San Diego and roll out across the remaining seven additional NBC markets during the year.
 
HBO signed a deal with AT&T to give U-verse TV customers access to the authentication-required online video services HBOGO and MAXGO.
 
G4 extended its deal with the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) making the cable/broadband network the official broadcaster for the E3 Expo through 2013. G4 plans to offer over 24 total hours of live broadcast coverage featuring exclusive news and original programming, as well as live-streaming of E3 events on g4tv.com.
 
Focusing its coverage on players with Latino backgrounds, Univision Interactive Media launched a co-branded sports site with the NBA featuring the latest news, photo galleries, interactive fan content and other offerings.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
The NATPE conference, which announced it has nearly reached capacity for floor space in its new Miami locale, is launching NATPE Connect this December, a social networking tool that will enable attendees to connect with one another before, during and after the market. The ad-supported site will enable attendees to build and share professional profiles, connect and communicate with other attendees, send and receive private messages, set up one-on-one on-site meetings, and build and export personalized meeting schedules to Outlook Calendar or iCalendar.
 
Paris-based video entertainment site Dailymotion announced that its traffic has grown by 45% in the past 6 months, expanding from 64 million uniques in May to 93 million in Oct.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Travel Ad Network (TAN) has purchased the assets of travel planning website TravelMuse, known for travel tools such as its TravelMuse Bookmarker, Planner and recommendation engine, the Inspiration Finder. TAN closed last month on a $15 million round of financing, which it will tap into to fund the acquisition.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
iTV technology provider Ensequence announced a partnership with WE tv and Wedding Central to deliver EBIF-enabled in-program interactive TV experiences, including voting and polling with live results, trivia, a live Twitter feed, RSS integration and viewing suggestions with a record/remind feature. The interactive capabilities will be enabled throughout WE tv and Wedding Central’s popular shows including Bridezillas, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera and the 2011 premiere Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?
 
The City of Angels finally has access to 4G mobile services. Clearwire announced 5 additional markets for its 4G mobile broadband network including Los Angeles, Miami, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. The company also announced plans to launch commercial 4G services in the San Francisco Bay area on Dec. 28.
 
“Lord of the Rings” director Sir Peter Jackson named Red Digital Cinema as his supplier of some 30 3D digital cameras for the upcoming shoot of the two-part “The Hobbit.”
 
Rovi Corp. today announced that its G-Guide Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and media networking solution, Connected Platform, have been incorporated in Buffalo‘s new multi-functional digital TV tuner “DTV-X900,” just launched in early Nov. 2010. The unit supports digital media renderer capability, enabling digital media stored in other network-attached storage devices and PCs to be selected and viewed via digital media controllers such as Windows 7.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Hispanics, the fastest-growing demo in the U.S., is expected to grow as an online population by nearly 10 million users between 2010 and 2014, according to a new eMarketer forecast. Over 32 million or some 62.9% of the U.S. Hispanic population will be online by next year, with penetration reaching 70% by 2014. The African American internet user population is somewhat smaller but also on the rise – eMarketer forecasts nearly 26 million blacks will go online at least monthly in 2011, for a penetration rate of 66.9%. And by 2014, 72.3% of blacks will be online.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
TVGuide.com
has upped Mickey O’Connor as its new Managing Editor, charged with overseeing breaking news and editorial coverage and managing staffs based in New York and Hollywood. The promotion is effective immediately, with Mickey reporting to Christy Tanner, SVP and GM, TVGuide.com.
 
Online sports publication Bleacher Report named former Associated Content CEO Patrick Keane to its Board of Directors and announced the hiring of two sales directors. Brian Kelly, formerly of CBSSport.com will take over as West Coast Director of Sales and Ryan Gould, previously with Burst Media, will fill the same position for the East Coast.

One of the best-researched online publications for years (and one of the earliest to erect paywalls and subscription plans, and e-commerce options,) Salon.com appears to be putting itself on the block. The award-winning site is looking for either a partner or outright buyer, according to comments made by CEO Richard Gringas in the WSJ. (No word yet on interested parties, but it could be a nice feather in the cap of a portal such as AOL looking to expand its content offerings.) Salon Media has accrued more than $15 million in losses in the past 5 years and its inability to turn a profit after 15 years is indicative of just how challenging the market for paid content online remains. Meanwhile, News Corp. continues to think about a sale of MySpace “with urgency,” according to a Reuters interview with News Corp. COO Chase Carey.
