Spin Master, a Canadian-based toy/entertainment company, grows its business by acquiring the worldwide rights to Wild Planet‘s Hyper Dash and Spy Gear brands. Spin Master plans to reinvent and develop a new approach to the existing and popular Spy Gear and Hyper Dash brands. Intrepid Investment Bankers acted as exclusive financial advisor to Wild Planet for this transaction. Spin Master brands include Bakugan Battle Brawlers, Air Hogs, Appfinity, Aquadoodle, La Dee Da, Nano Speed, Spin Master Games, Tech Deck and Zoobles. Spin Master has been designing, developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer products for kids since 1994 and also operates Spin Master Entertainment, which develops and produced TV and other media properties.

LICENSING

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) releases the first two titles in the Curious George Multi-Touch Storybook and Activities Series, Curious George Says Thank You and Curious George in the Big City, for the iPad. Both titles were created using Apple’s iBooks Author and allows readers to take an active role in Georges adventures while also enjoying the narrative. Features in the titles are embedded slideshows and animation, touch-responsive puzzles, and comprehension activities. After readers help George through his adventure, there are also related bonus activities such as digital mazes and word puzzles, among others. Two new titles in the Curious George Multi-Touch Storybook and Activity Series will launch every month for the next six months.

MARKETING

NYC hotel The New York Palace inks a new partnership with the Broadway musical Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Under the deal The Palace serves as the official hotel sponsor for the musical and will offer guests a fairytale experience, including visits from Prince Charming at its Cinderella weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning this Saturday, December 1 and featuring items for kids and adults. The hotel will also offer two different Cinderella-themed hotel packages (www.newyorkpalace.com). Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella (www.cinderellaonbroadway.com) is set to open on Broadway in January 2013 at the Broadway Theatre. The hotel already offers an American Girl Place Package.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Spain-based Imira Entertainment acquires the exclusive global broadcast rights to the celebrated short-form, preschool, clay animated series Koki (26×5). The deal will see Imira serve as the exclusive representative for the worldwide broadcast rights for Koki, including TV, internet, IPTV, PDA, Video and VOD, as well as the non-exclusive publishing and licensing rights. Koki is produced by Paco Rodriguez of PPM Multimedia and the great Nina Elias Bamberger of Children Television Workshop (now known as Sesame Workshop). The preschool series follows a family of chickens, including a little hen named Koki. Throughout the series Koki learns about responsibilities and friendship, and the ups and downs of having a younger sibling.

Mediatoon Distribution completes a program sales deal for the third season of the animated series Garfield to SRC Canada (French language channel). Earlier this year the third season of Garfield was picked up by Cartoon Network in the US and Japan. Additionally, Channel Sky 3D (Italy), in partnership with Turner Broadcasting, will for the first time feature Garfield on a 3D channel with two 3D Christmas episodes on Christmas Day, which will encore several times during January. The CGI Garfield episodes will simulcast on Boomerang.

Bolts & Blip adds new broadcast deals for the Benelux and Polish territories, under new pacts inked by Netherlands based sub-distributor KidsPlant Distribution and series producers Canada-based ToonBox and South Korea’s RedRover. KidsPlant finalizes a deal for the 3D Bolts & Blip series with Nickelodeon, which will air the series in Benelux beginning in 2013. Additionally, ToonBox and RedRover sign a deal with Poland’s Canal +, which will televise the series on its stereoscopic network and will begin its regular broadcast on sister network Teletoon+ from February 2013. Bolts & Blip follows the adventures of two best robot friends who regularly find themselves in over their heads after being suddenly drafted into the Lunar League of Robotic Sports. The 3D stereoscopic Bolts & Blip series can be seen in 70+ territories on traditional and S3D channels including 3net (US), BSkyB (UK), and Skylife (Korea).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BBC names Paul Dempsey to act as interim CEO, BBC Worldwide beginning this December 2012, overseeing the commercial division until the new CEO Tim Davie takes up the position in March 2013. Dempsey is currently Managing Director of Consumer Products, BBC Worldwide, overseeing TV entertainment packaged media, including DVD, Blu-ray, DTO, licensed product, music, BBC Shop and book publishing partnerships. Tim Davie will hand over his responsibilities as Acting Director-General to Director-General Designate Tony Hall in March 2013. BBC Worldwide’s current CEO, John Smith, announced last month that he will step down after eight years in his post in December 2012. Dempsey joined BBC Worldwide in 1998 as UK Sales Director and has since served as MD of BBC Audiobooks and Director of BBC Worldwide’s Audio & Music. Prior to that he spent eight years with Mars Confectionery followed by two years as Sales Director of Frontline, BBC Worldwide’s magazine joint venture business. As a result of the move, Marcus Arthur, MD for Global Brands, will take over Dempsey’s current responsibilities as Acting Managing Director for Consumer Products, in addition to his current role.

Insight Strategy Group, an NYC-based research-driven strategy company, promotes two.

Slaine Jenkins is upped to Research Manager. Jenkins joined Insight in 2010, during which time she has held several positions, most recently serving as Research Analyst. Jenkins has worked with a range of clients including Kaboom!, MTV, Nickelodeon and Hasbro.
Amalia Branaa is appointed as Senior Designer. Branaa, who was Graphic Designer and Project Manager, develops information graphics used to support Insight’s studies in its digital, video, online and print presentations. Previously, she was Graphic Designer for BridgerConway, and also held design positions with VICE Magazine + Virtue and UNICEF Innovation.
