TIME announced it has partnered with Twitter to be the exclusive social media partner to vote for @TIME’s Person of the Year. The poll technology is supported by Poptip, and uses direct replies on Twitter that include #TIMEPOY and tweets with the mention @TIME to vote. TIME is also using Vine to lure celebs to weigh in with short videos on who they think should be given the title.
It was TV’s worst-kept secret, but as of yesterday it’s official: Katie Couric confirmed her new role as “Global Anchor” for Yahoo. Couric told Capital New York that her new show could be anything from a half-hour evening news broadcast or a two-hour morning show. “What I really am excited about in working with the team at Yahoo is that there are no rules right now,” she said. Couric is planning on keeping her syndicated talk show, Katie, least until early next year.
Turner Broadcasting System is debuting its new health and wellness entertainment brand, upwave, with the latest show The Tim Ferriss Experiment on digital platforms a week before its Dec. 1st premiere. As of yesterday, viewers can preview the show on YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Google Play, Xbox Video, PlayStation and InDemand.

Although Ron Burgundy is a verbose gasbag, Will Ferrell’s egocentric Anchorman character exemplifies a new era of marketing. In the next months, a 27-second video of Ferrell as Burgundy will circle the web as he congratulates Irish actor Jamie Dornan on landing the Fifty Shades of Grey lead. The only problem is that Burgundy thinks the movie is about bad weather in Ireland, and not erotica. The video is the tent-pole of a strategic raft of custom-made social content – that also includes native ads and a Tumblr campaign – that Paramount hopes will drive movie-goers to the theaters on December 20th in Burgundian droves, according to Adweek. If it works, it will likely change the marketing blueprint for movies.

Twitter’s IPO price hit an all-time low yesterday, dropping by four percent to $39, after opening at $45.10 a share and crossing the $50 mark on the first day of trading just two weeks ago. Part of the pall is the issue of “unidentified” or fake Twitter accounts that populate the site. Last spring, Twitter applied a filter that blocks 95 percent of new fake accounts. Yet according to the Wall Street Journal, it has done little to adopt any new spam bot techniques. In Twitter’s defense, says Peek Analytics CEO Michael Hussey, “the company sees creation of spam accounts as a losing battle, and they have made better filters so that fake accounts can’t interrupt real users’ interactions on the site,” he told Cynopsis. Peek Analytics provides Twitter demographics and data to marketers.
The New York Stock Exchange is now offering a photo and signature app to special visitors called the @NYSECam, developed by Atimi Software. The Twitter-cam and digital guest book app allows guests to use NYSE iPads to take selfies from the trading floor, autograph images and easily tweet in the highly regulated environment. Mike Tyson and Twitter’s Dick Costolo have already used the app.
Microsoft’s Xbox One matched the PlayStation 4‘s first day sales numbers, and releasing info that it sold more than one million consoles within 24 hours, too. Tech Crunch reports, despite the record sales that beat out the Xbox 360’s opening day numbers, it’s important to note that the Xbox One launched in 11 more countries than the PS4.

Blackberry announced yesterday that three top executives are stepping down from the company. Blackberry’s COO Kristian Tear and CMO Frank Boulben are both departing, while James Tersh is replacing CFO Brian Bidulka. However, Bidulka will stay on as an adviser until the end of the year.
Multiplatform video service provider Vubiquity hired Brendan Sullivan as its Executive VP, Global Operations and Technology. Sullivan was previously SVP of IT and Engineering at Digital Generation.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced that it has re-elected its President and CEO Bruce Paisner for a two-year term on the Board of Directors. He has been with the academy since January 2004.
The New York Times has named its new Managing Editor of Video Content Development: Bruce Headlam. He has been with NYT since 1998, and most recently was the Business Monday Editor.
Dstillery, formerly known as Media6Degrees, announced it has hired Daizhua (Henry) Chen, PhD as its new Data Scientist. He previously had assistantships for Quora Inc, Columbia Business School and MIT.
