Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05.07.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
NOTE: We have reformatted our edition: Hope you enjoy!
YouTube could unveil a subscription offering for channel partners as early as this week, according to several media reports. Per the Financial Times, the paid subscription service will initially include up to 50 “specialist” video channels, with individual channels being offered for as low as $1.99/month. These channels can span a wide variety of categories, from children’s content to music, and would feature libraries of on-demand videos and programming. Ad Age reported earlier in the year that YouTube would look to keep 45% of all subscription-based revenue under such a model.
In Other Words: any subscription option from YouTube should be seen as a trial run — there’s nothing confirming that YouTube users are willing to pay for ad-free/catalogued/premium content.
Ben Silverman’s multiplatform studio Electus has made a “strategic investment” in Hud:sun Media, a producer of entertainment and branded content. Together, the companies will co-develop and produce television and digital video programming, as well as branded entertainment projects. Hud:sun Media is currently the production company behind Bravo’s Pregnant in Heels, Oxygen’s I’m Having Their Baby, Yahoo’s Style Studio with Rebecca Minkoff, Conde Nast’s video channels for GQ and Glamour, and Nine West’s branded YouTube channel, Channel 9.
The New York Times and Retro Report, a nonprofit news organization that “critically examines the major events and news coverage of our past,” have launched a new online documentary series. Called Retro Reports, these weekly 10-15 minute clips will “take a new look at an old news story and report on what we know now.” It will be available on The Times’ baby boomer blog, Booming, as well as RetroReport.org. Each video will also be accompanied by articles from Michael Winerip. The series is scheduled to run through 2014, with new videos appearing on Mondays.

Hulu Plus now has a Windows Phone 8 app. Available in the Windows Phone Store, the app is optimized to the Windows tile-based user interface. This includes routinely surfacing new TV episodes, shows, and other content directly to the “Live Tiles” on the Windows Phone home screen. Content will be organized based on what users watch and their interests, as well as by several “hubs”: TV, Movies, Latino, Trailers, and Kids.
TBS, Electus, and DumbDumb, a studio from Jason Batemen and Will Arnett, have a partnership in place to produce and distribute comedy shorts across multiple platforms. Yesterday, the trio launched a branded video they produced for Ford Motors and its new Fusion sedan. The clip, which is called “Red Rover,” stars Dan O’Brien (Whitney), Alison Becker (Parks and Recreation), and George Basil (CollegeHumor Originals). It’s available on custom page on TBS.com, as well as TBS’ mobile website and YouTube channel. The short will be promoted on TBS during Saturday airings of The Bing Bang Theory as well as select primetime and weekend movies on the cable channel. It will also be featured across the Turner Digital Network, with all promotions driving viewers to the custom webpage.
DG plans to adopt both Ad-ID and EIDR standards for coding video ads across all media platforms. This follows an announcement from SAG-AFTRA and ANA-4A’s about two weeks ago, mandating the universal adoption of Ad-ID as the sole asset identifier for all TV, radio, and digital commercials. Meanwhile, EIDR is a global registry for unique identification of movie and TV content. The hope is that by establishing universal coding standards, and getting an ad server like DG on board (DG handles 80% of TV ads and a “large portion” of online ads), it will make it easier for media companies and agencies to track video content across devices.
Aereo is looking to prevent another court battle with broadcasters when it opens up shop in Boston on May 15. The live-TV streaming provider has filed a new lawsuit against CBS, seeking to stop the television network from suing Aereo in Boston, or any of the other 22 cities the service is currently planning on expanding to. In its complaint, Aereo cites comments from CBS chief Les Moonves, who has promised to “follow” Aereo wherever it goes and sue the company again. “The fact that CBS did not prevail in their efforts to enjoin Aereo in their existing federal lawsuit does not entitle them to a do-over in another jurisdiction,” said a spokesperson for Aereo in a statement. “We are hopeful that any such efforts to commence duplicative lawsuits to try to seek a different outcome will be rejected by the courts.” The suit was filed in the same US District Court in NY that ruled in favor of Aereo last year. That decision was upheld by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals last month.
thePlatform is introducing a new web-based console for live-event video delivery and management, accessible from within its mpx multiplatform video publishing system. The enhanced mpx system now offers the ability to schedule and manage live signal acquisition and encoding, handle dynamic ad insertion and metadata creation, and automatically archive live video broadcasts in order to quickly produce VOD clips and replays. With mpx’s existing capabilities for on-demand video management and delivery already in place, thePlatform customers can now manage on-demand and live video content for playback across computers, tablets, smartphones, and other connected devices, all from one central location. thePlatform is an independent subsidiary of Comcast.
NBCUniversal’s latest Brand Power Index (BPI), which measures the 500 most talked about brands among consumers every quarter, says nostalgia was the key to driving buzz during the first three months of 2013. Jack Daniel’s, Microsoft, and Sony PlayStation — all three used nostalgic elements within their brand messages during the first quarter. All three were also among the biggest movers in the BPI: Jack Daniel’s Sinatra-featuring campaign for a new drink named after the famous crooner helped the brand rise 27% with adults on the BPI; Microsoft, which connected to launch of its latest Internet Explorer browser with the 90s generation, bumping Microsoft up 18% on the Q1 BPI; A weeklong YouTube ad campaign chronicling the evolution of the PlayStation helped Sony jump up 19%. The BPI methodology consists of online search data from comScore, social media buzz data from New Media Strategies, and “person-to-person conversations” tracked by Keller Fay Group.
CraveOnline has named Mike Bender as its new SVP/Sales. Based in NY, Bender will be responsible for the company’s national sales team, and will work to secure partnerships with brands and marketers looking to reach Crave’s audience across its male/lifestyle publishing properties.

Hotel brand DoubleTree by Hilton has launched a YouTube channel called DTour, which will allow users/customers to post all sorts of social media content on the channel about their experiences with DoubleTree hotels. Created in collaboration with Google, the DTour channel will use software from ThisMoment to enable users to upload videos and photos posted on other social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The channel also offers travel tips and recommendations about what to see/where to go from DoubleTree employees, via a dedicated section called “DTour Guides.”
To promote the launch of DTour, DoubleTree is also hosting a YouTube-related contest, which will give six winners the chance to visit different parts of the world and document their experience via videos, blog posts, photos, and social media posts. These experiences, under the label “DTour of a Lifetime,” will be available on the YouTube channel, alongside all of the other user-generated content. Users have until May 31 to submit for the contest, which can be done via the YouTube channel.
