Facebook announced a new markup language and an open source platform to give software developers unprecedented access to build deeply integrated next generation applications for the social networking site. Facebook Platform, introduced at the “f8” developer’s conference last week, launched with more than 65 developers and 85 applications including Microsoft, Amazon, Veoh, washingtonpost.com, Photobucket and Twitter. Facebook itself kicked off the “hackathon” with a video application of its own, allowing users to add video to their profile pages or share live webcam videos with friends within their private network.
AOL is set to launch user-generated video upload service UnCut in June. The new service will be implemented on many of AOL’s platforms including AIM and the new social network service, AIM Pages, according to AOL Online Video Chief Fred McIntyre.
Vivendi Mobile Entertainment plans to launch an ad-supported multimedia website featuring music, video, films and game content from Vivendi and other providers, for consumption on PCs and mobile devices. Vivendi tried and failed to create an entertainment portal named Vizzavi once before with European mobile carrier Vodafone.
Amazon.com announced user-submitted video contest to promote the July 21 release of Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows where young Muggles can upload testimonials of their enthusiasm for the series that comes to an end with the release of the novel. A selection of the first 1,000 videos submitted by June 1 will be shown on Amazon.com.
The most popular new application on the new Facebook Platform is music service iLike, adding more than 40,000 users during the first day of operation. iLike, which beat the popular last.fm site to the punch with a music tool for the network, allows users to search for and upload music files and concert information to their profiles. iLike will even alert you when your favorite artists are in town!
Do you want an iCal-type feature for your cell phone without having to buy a $500 iPhone? Google launched a mobile calendar tool that makes it easy to view and edit events by using the text function on your phone. Go to the WAP site calendar.google.com.
Walt Disney Internet Group is expecting revenues of $1.5 billion this year thanks to strong growth in media (i.e. ESPN.com), paid content (iTunes sales) and mobile services, according to comments made by President Steven Wadsworth at last week’s Goldman Sachs internet conference. Subscription revenue is a large component of Disney’s strategy, as the company plans to use free ad-supported services to lure consumers into subscription deals.
Democrats are pushing the FCC to start educating consumers about the digital TV transition immediately, according to Broadcasting & Cable. The heads of the House Energy & Commerce Committee have given the FCC until June 11 to come up with a detailed plan.
Apple is blocking Apple store visitors from accessing their MySpace profiles. Apparently the company is concerned with people loitering around stores for too long, checking their profiles and using Mac webcams to take pictures. Traffic at the stores is expected to be thick when the iPhone is released late next month.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is suing YouTube for not preventing users from downloading a clip of a car crash recorded at the Great Egg Harbor toll plaza earlier this month. YouTube complied with a request to remove the clip from its site, but the NJTA is blaming the site for it popping up on several other video sharing sites such as NextPoint’s Break.com, which was also named in the suit. The head of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has since put a new policy in place limiting the number of employees allowed to make copies of videos captured by highway surveillance cameras.

AOL Chairman/CEO Randy Falco and COO Ron Gant admitted the web portal had fallen behind in product development and announced plans to cut back on ads to make the service less cluttered and more user-friendly. AOL is also in the process of placing more emphasis on search in a partnership with Google and relaunching many of its vertical content categories.
Digicorp, Inc. launched a new advertising service for online music to be delivered via its web portal Beat9.com. The service will utilize Digicorp’s ViraCast technology to dynamically insert advertising into music files wherever they travel across the Internet. Meanwhile 1720 Entertainment signed an ad revenue sharing deal with Digicorp for viral peer-to-peer distribution of songs and music videos. The ad-supported music will be available free on iTunes, LimeWire and BitTorrent.
