Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 25, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Yahoo and Nokia announced an ambitious new alliance that has Yahoo powering email, search, chat and navigational services across Nokia’s mobile devices, to be known as “Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat, powered by Yahoo!”. Nokia, for its part, will integrate its Ovi Maps mobile mapping service to power Yahoo’s maps and navigation services across its entire portal. Finally, Nokia and Yahoo! plan to work on ID federation between their services, a la Facebook Connect. The deal is part of a larger plan to expand Yahoo’s existing partnerships with nearly 100 mobile providers around the world to help drive usage of its services in far away lands. The tie-up, which will begin yielding co-branded services later this year with a global roll out planned for 2011, does not involve advertising.
A new partnership between Open Gate Capital and Lionsgate will allow content from TV Guide the magazine to return to TVGuide.com for the first time since Macrovision broke up the sites into two separate pieces in 2008, per Ad Age. TVGuideMagazine.com only attracted 103k visitors in April, as many online readers continue to have no idea it exists apart from Lionsgate’s TVGuide.com, which averaged 7.8 million uniques in April.
Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, co-hosts of Discovery Channel‘s MythBusters series, have formed a new production company and signed a multi-year deal to co-executive produce additional seasons of the popular science show for the network. They will team with BermanBraun to develop and create additional television series with Discovery Channel, as well as video games, a new branded web initiative and a live show to take on the road. William Morris Endeavor will package and represent all new series and represent the pair in all other platforms and ancillaries.
To try and put a face to the ranks of war casualties piling up in Afghanistan and Iraq, CNN.com has launched Home and Away, an immersive interactive site allowing users to learn about and pay tribute to more than 6,000 fallen troops from more than 20 countries. CNN chief national correspondent John King will make a month-long tribute on his week-nightly 7 pm show highlighting a different fallen soldier’s personal story each night.
Comcast’s G4 network has re-signed as the official multiplatform broadcaster of the E3 Gaming Expo and will return this year with live press conference streams (Sony, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft and Valve will be covered), game demos, exclusive web series, breaking news and hundreds of HD videos shot from the floor. G4’s Live coverage of E3 2010 begins Monday, June 14 at 3pm ET.
The 36th annual Seattle International Film Festival kicked off last weekend with a full complement of digital and social media components to keep festival goers engaged in the crowd-friendly fest. With more than 250 features and 150 shorts, SIFF is the nation’s largest (and longest) film festival and social media has become essential to help attendees figure out what’s worth seeing.
- A new “iSIFF” app for the iPhone from local developer POP has a much improved interface from last year, allowing you to slide through upcoming screenings and tap a photo from the film for more info, to purchase tickets or to post comments about it on Facebook or Twitter
- Siff.net is now fully integrated with the app and places SIFF’s Facebook and Twitter feeds on the front of the homepage; SIFF currently has over 3,600 Facebook fans
- This year’s Three Minute Masterpiece film contest, co-sponsored by The Seattle Times, required entrants to use their mobile phones to shoot the films. One of the 11 “Masterpieces” will be awarded the grand prize at public SIFF screening on May 31
Digital signage firm Saddle Ranch Productions is hoping film students, enthusiasts and curious souls are willing to pay money to be a fly on the wall of a movie set. The company has built a platform it calls Sul Set that will provide a live video stream delivered from the set and enable subscribers to interact with cast and crew members via a live chat feature. Sul Set’s first project, “Grooming Giselle,” will begin production in early June and the site is charging $10 for the first 250 who sign up.
Metacafe launched its latest content vertical dedicated to Movies feature trailers, original editorial content, exclusive behind-the-scenes clips and featurettes, restricted redband content and a first-of-its-kind 3D showcase scheduled to launch in June. The site is edited by Mark Poggi, formerly of Netflix, and Steven Horn, formerly of Rotten Tomatoes.
Overtaken by a new transparency impulse, Google disclosed its AdSense revenue split for the first time, stating that a “vast majority” of publishers receive 68% of revenue earned worldwide of ads placed on their sites and 51% of revenue when search ads appear using AdSense. Revenue shares for AdSense mobile apps, feeds and games weren’t disclosed. Larger publishers, of course, tend to negotiate their own splits and Google reserves the rights alter the terms at any time.
Twitter recently unveiled its own Promoted Tweets solution to accommodate advertiser-backed sponsored tweets and intends to keep this activity separate from core Twitter feeds. In a broadside leveled toward ad networks, the company announced it will not allow third parties to inject paid tweets into any services that leverage the Twitter API. COO Dick Costolo says the company is trying to preserve the integrity of its real-time interest graph and admits that, “third party ad networks are not necessarily looking to preserve the unique user experience Twitter has created.” Several start-ups have already emerged to create ad platforms around Twitter including Ad.ly and Tweetup.
CBS Interactive announced that several of its news, sports and entertainment properties have been certified as being in full compliance with the IAB’s new Video Ad Serving Template 2.0, or “VAST.”
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg weighed in on Facebook’s privacy mess in an op-ed in the Washington Post yesterday, promising that the company will soon announce changes that will make it easier for users to control and hide their data on the web. “Simply put, many of you thought our controls were too complex… We missed the mark,” he wrote in the mea culpa. “In the coming weeks we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use. We will also give you an easy way to turn off all third-party services.”
Social gaming company Zynga codified a deal with Facebook to continue to develop games like Farmville and Mafia Wars for the social networking site. Zynga has agreed to share revenue it generates from the games with Facebook, with the latter retaining up to 30% of Facebook Credit purchases of virtual goods, according to Ad Age. Zynga is currently testing Facebook Credits in select games and will expand to more titles over the coming months.
London-based lead generation specialist Clash-Media has acquired ad matching start-up Trigga, provider of a proprietary network of real-time news and lifestyle websites contextually chosen to match users’ interests. Ed Bussey, CEO and founder of Trigga, will become CEO of the newly combined Clash-Media group.
Online display advertising company Rocket Fuel is partnering with Nielsen to use aggregated offline consumer purchase data to improve online ad effectiveness in real time. Rocket Fuel plans to leverage offline sales data to create model groups of consumers with specific brand affinities, targeting “look-alikes” based on specific brand attributes.
Cisco’s Flip Video division is coming out with a new line of camcorders tied to M.Night Shyamalan’s upcoming 3D feature The Last Airbender, available now on its website and next month from Amazon. Last Airbender-branded MinoHD and SlideHD models will each ship with 1 of 4 different skins, each representing one the of the film’s 4 main characters and the corresponding “nations” they represent (air, water, earth and fire.) Confirmed gadget freak M.Night (“Sixth Sense”) has even shot an exclusive video introduction to the camera that comes embedded on its flash drive, with additional behind-the-scenes footage to be released in June.
Interactive entertainment company Ludia and FremantleMedia Enterprises is launching the free downloadable American Idol Star Experience PC game on May 26 to coincide with the Season 9 finale of American Idol on Fox. The game enables fans to construct a custom avatar from head to toe and sing from dozens of hits, choreographing dance moves and directing staging elements such as camera angles and special effects. Social interaction within Facebook is enabled via Facebook connect.
Cloud-based subscription music service Thumbplay struck a deal with Cellular South to enable Android & BlackBerry Cell South customers to have unlimited access to the streaming music service via a $10/month app. The Thumbplay app enables you to build playlists that auto-synch between your PC/Mac and smartphone and download tracks to your phone that play without a network connection.
Current Media has tapped John Arianas as VP, East Coast Sales, responsible for managing Current’s New York ad sales office. John will work with Current’s programming and marketing teams and spearhead East Coast Current TV and digital sales, as well as new business development. He will report to Ken Ripley, EVP/Ad Sales.
The recently revamped AOL portal celebrated its 25th anniversary yesterday with both new CEO Tim Armstrong and co-founder Steve Case doing a spate of interviews to discuss the company’s milestones and future plans. AOL has come along way since the days it spent lavishly to send every residence in America a shrink-wrapped floppy disc, struggling to remain relevant as the earth moved beneath it. The fact that AOL is still around (and that it didn’t bankrupt Time Warner) is saying something as Google laid to waste to too many content sites to name. In many ways the mission of the portal – to connect people, build communities and enable commerce through display advertising – has not changed. It’s just that the competition to provide this apparatus is immense. New developments seem to point to a back-to-basics approach that may sprout new audiences and better engagement in the future. Encouraging signs on the horizon include new product launches like the crowd-sourced Seed, which determines the appetite of the masses and assigns and distributes original work to its websites. Patch, which was backed by Armstrong before AOL acquired it last June, is a community-specific news and information platform that seeks to provide professionally-edited news and information to local communities that are underserved by crumbing traditional media outlets. Lifestream is AOL’s computer or mobile-based application that aggregates feeds from multiple social networks.
