Before its new slate of fall shows hits the air, Fox is already aiming to make Facebook fans and Twitter friends of potential viewers. Nearly all the network’s new programs, unveiled at its upfront in New York yesterday, were launched to the media buying community with Facebook pages and Twitter feeds up and running. The advance social media legwork underscores the importance of capitalizing and creating online buzz in building a show. The network’s breakout hit Glee has succeeded for many reasons, but in part because it’s been active in online social media. The focus on social also dovetails with the rise in dollars flowing into social media. eMarketer said revenues in the US from social networks should reach $3 billion this year and nearly $4 billion next year. But social buzz may be worth even more because that’s earned word of mouth. Here’s the Fox lineup with Facebook and Twitter feeds for its new shows. In fact, a recent 24/7 Wall St./Harris Poll found that among online U.S. adults, two in five say used social media to comment, post, watch or read something about a TV show.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The Netflix deal-making train keeps chugging along. The increasingly powerful media company struck a multi-year deal with Miramax to stream its titles, such as Shakespeare in Love, Pulp Fiction and The English Patient. The deal kicks in starting in June. Titles will be added on a rotating basis.

Interactive TV firm Ensequence launched a live traffic app on Yahoo!’s Connected TV Widget Engine that’s available on TV sets from Samsung, LG, Vizo, Sony and Toshiba. The launch, which details traffic conditions, marks Ensequence’s expansion into connected TV platforms.

Looking to link TV to social media, the stars of WE tv‘s Braxton Family Values series will live tweet during the show’s remaining five episodes starting with the 5/17 episode at 9 p.m. ET. Viewers can follow the tweets on air and live Tweet on www.wetv.com alongside the Braxton sisters. The Twitter feed is #BFV.

More live tweeting comes from ABC. Dana Delany from Body of Proof will live tweet tonight at 10 PT during the season finale of her show. Her Twitter handle is @DanaDelany.

Popular Web personality Shira Lazar is slated to launch a new CBSNews.com show today called What’s Trending. The show will dive into the news, events, stories and people that are trending online and driving social buzz conversations. The show will run each week.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Digital media company Evolve Media Corp. is rolling out a travel-focused sales division called Globetrotting Digital Media that will sell ad inventory for several premium travel publishers online. Evolve will work with 120 travel-centric partner sites that deliver 9.3 million unique global visitors.

Groupon said yesterday at the Northwest Mobile conference in Seattle that the mobile platform could account for about half of Groupon’s deals business in a few years, according to an AllThingsD report. That jibes with research pointing to the rapid growth in local business and local searches on mobile phones.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

More evidence of the growing reach of social media advertising comes with the news that car marker Honda will lean on Facebook to help launch its 2012 Civic. Via its Sounds of Civic campaign, Facebooks fans can submit and vote on original songs inspired by the car on the Honda Civic Facebook page. The winner snags a new car.   ( www.facebook.com/hondacivic ).

Also in social news, beer maker Budweiser is launching a branded show for its social channels, called Bud United presents: The Big Time. The show runs on Facebook and RenRen and will follow a group of young adults around the globe as they compete for different “big time” dreams. The Co-Executive Producer of The Amazing Race Evan Weinsein is producing the show, which will be distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Foursquare and Google quietly teamed up to test near-field communication technology with location-based check-ins on some Google Smartphones at Google’s developer conference last week. The test could mark the beginning of near-field projects between the two companies that may eventually reach consumers.

Cloud-based mobile app startup StackMob landed $7.5 million in a venture round led by Trinity Ventures with funding also coming from Harrison Metal and Baselines Ventures. StackMob is a mobile app platform for developers.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Aiming to ride the social gaming wave, Starz has rolled out a Facebook game for its new show Camelot. Camelot: The Game is the premium network’s second foray into social media games, following the launch earlier this year of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which has logged more than one million monthly users, Starz said. Starz partnered with game publisher 6waves.

Cartoon Network expanded to Android platforms with its video app that features some of the network’s top shows such as Ben 10, Adventure Time and Generator Rex. It includes full episodes and clips.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Online video ad marketplace SpotXchange hired Erik Swain as VP of Operations and Ben Sullins as VP of Engineering. Swain joins from DataLogix and Sullins recently worked for Level 3 Communications.

The Weather Channel promoted Cameron Clayton to Executive VP of Digital products. He reports to the company’s CEO and most recently served as Senior VP of Product where he oversaw mobile, digital ITV and other products.

Ensequence has hired Brian Powell to oversee its new connected device offerings across all platforms. Powell joins Ensequence from Devici, where he served as founder and former CEO.

3D network 3net named appointed Carlos Gutierrez to the new post of VP Business Affairs and Legal. He’ll start June 1, moving over from Discovery Communications, where he served as VP Business Operations and Strategy. 3net is a joint venture between Sony, Discovery and IMAX.
